I have been in manufacturing for over 15 years. If I were a betting man I would bet that Ruike bought a worn out set of molds from one of Wera's suppliers and just slapped them in an injection machine.

Instead of “not bothering” to change the color, I’d say they deliberately copied the color. They did a 3D scan of the original Wera, and used that CAD file to create their own mould. Easy peasy.

when I ordered the metric wera L-keys they came with the box and a sticker, but the SAE one's didn't, I was planning on keeping the box to store them in my toolbox so rip, at least I have drawer liner.

Interesting that despite using aluminium for the bit holder lock the fake still ends up being lighter. One difference I did notice in the molding is if you look inside the bit storage section in line with the logo the fake is flat whilst the real one is rounded (as is my different model driver that has bit storage). I wonder if perhaps they got hold of an older mold that had been thrown away (either being too worn or an old revision).
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is almost like they went dumpster diving and found the mold. It usually isn't worth it to copy the design exactly like they did because of all the work that is involved in making those molds.
@terrorfirma2764
@terrorfirma2764 7 жыл бұрын
I worked in a mould shop for Stanley for a number of years. The moulds usually either kept in house or destroyed but never thrown away. The moulds for these handles will have been made by copying from a Wera handle. Tooling is very cheap to make in China, just like everything else. Also the difference in weight of the handles is probably due to the differences in the tooling or how tightly packed the plastic is during the moulding process.

Tractor Supply Co. (TSC) sells knock-off Knipex pliers. Same color scheme and all. In fairness to TSC they sell them at the bargain bins at the entrance with all of the other cheap stuff so they aren't trying to pass them off as something else. They are in a 3 pack 7 - 12 inch I think.

The very quick glance at the knock off brand name on the blister looked like Ruike? They are the manufacturer for Boker Tech tools (screwdrivers and swiss army style knives). Thanks for this review, I almost bought one. Glad I did not, that thing looks lacking in the quality department

I only have the one Ruike knife. It appeared to be made of quality materials, but, if even a little bit of lint gets caught in the locking section it closes and leaves the edge of the knife proud of the scales. You will only notice it when you see the dripping blood from your thumb.

Wonder what the difference is in price. If it is fraction of the cost of the Wera tool (which are really over the top expensive here in Oz) then I would imagine people will see it as good value despite its lesser quality. Not me, I am happy to pay for quality tools, but Wera price their tools like Snap-on here but have none of Snap-on's name recognition.

I guarantee the tolls work the same. You put the same bit in both tools and use the same screw I bet you get the same result. So really they do the same thing. It's possible that the handles for the Wera are actually cast in China and that some of the supply was diverted or an old worn out mold was sold off to a counterfeiter. I hate blister packs because they often cut you when to try to rip them open - they seem like a lawsuit waiting to happen. I use a set of Wiss MPX serrated utility shears to open blister packs.... The marks on the extension look like the result of a press die rather than a machining process.

I suppose it is always possible, I think it only has to be assembled in the stated COO, but Wera does have products from Taiwan (their sockets), so I doubt they would ship something all the way to the Czech Republic to be assembled when they could do it in Taiwan.

I can't see a big problem with it. It doesn't claim to be a Wera KK25, it just looks similar and has a very similar design, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. What is the price difference? If it is a fraction of the cost of the Wera it may be better value than the original. The weight difference is probably just the missing metal spring (~10 grams) that pushes the metal driver shaft out of the Wera one, no big deal. For a non-professional the knockoff is probably the better option, just clean it and lubricate it with some silicone and it will be fine.
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 Жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure of that, quality tools are made from good steel alloys, with good heat treatment. With the knockoff that's unlikely. The steel quality in the bit extender, the holder and the bits themselves are all important, not so much the type of plastic the handle is made of. I would guess that these bits will burr or break very easily.
@Martian74
@Martian74 Жыл бұрын

@@Martian74 Instead of buying the KK25, I just bought the Bit Check 7 Wera bitset, and the basic 78mm handle, not even the one with the Rapidator. I think together the 2 cost me £15 if that, and it gives me in effect 12 different screwdrivers, 6 stubby and 6 longer. If I'd bought 12 screwdrivers for that price they would be real junk. I don't need the KK25 with the bit storage in the handle although I can see how for some people who do maintenance for a job it would be handy as it's portable.

I live in a small town. Our transfer station won't recycle the really cheap, thin plastics regardless of the number stamped on the packaging. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people think they are recycling those plastics only to have the recycling station send the cheap plastics to land fill.
@GermanToolReviews

I hear a lot of the same thing. Like if a plastic bottle still has the cap on they often just throw it away because it takes too much time to unscrew it. It becomes a safety issue when they compact it with the cap on as it will explode and possibly damage something. On the other spectrum, the homeless people who live in the area go by and pull out all the aluminum cans out of peoples recycling bins when they put them on the street and take those directly to a scrap yard. Big cities often do make a profit on recycling, but it is mainly for aluminum and cardboard/paper products. Where I live I also cannot recycle plastic bags because they clog up the sorting machines.

To many followers to see every comment, not a big possibility for you seeing this. I know that this is a counterfeit, it’s very obvious. There are so many differences between the original, doesn’t even show the same name. Why I’m asking, is because of some tools that I have recently acquired. I have ordered all of the Redbull edition tools. They have now been discontinued, and it’s to late to buy the regularly price on amazon and other “legit” places. So, I’m having to get on and look for them on E BAY and a couple other places. I am having to pay top dollar for these items, but that’s not the actual issue. I just see that they are coming from many different countries. I’m curious as to know if anyone knows of people are making counterfeit Wera tools? One of the ones that I have received already. It is a little iffy on perfection, doesn’t work perfectly. I didn’t know if it’s because it brand new and it hasn’t been “broken in” yet?

Here's my impression of the Chinese business model, with a little embellishment to make my point. Copy a product/design (aka theft). Make that product as cheaply as possible. Give the best impression possible that it is the real product; not a fake. Take the money and run. This is the culturally acceptable way to make a living/feed your family; no shame in stealing designs from other countries, and no shame in selling deceptive products (to foreigners) that don't work. If they could sell a hex wrench set made from lead, they would do it. This method is deeply demonstrated in Chinese military products. This interests me when we make generalizations about tools that are American made vs Taiwan made vs German vs China, India, etc. If anyone with more knowledge wants to shed more light on this and/or link articles...thanks Im still missing the intro with the metal music. It sets a tone, and makes you're channel just that little bit more distinctive, IMHO

Some of our products were ripped off like that, you will find that the plastic machine shop will just continue to run the tool for a few thousand more shots and sell the blanks to another customer (or even the same factory) all they need to do now is a simple pad printer to do their own logo They will invariably use a higher percentage of regrind material too, and even a different blend of plastic to save money, also decreasing the machines cycle time to get more shots per hour- This will have an effect on the way the blank sets. The driver bits are generic junk that cost a few cents, not difficult. At least they didn't try to brand it as wera, they had some morals! I have the same wera and honestly. I hate it. Very "plasticky". Honestly the china model doesnt look bad. If anything it looks like they improved it. The bit holder atleast.
@HomoKieran
@HomoKieran 7 жыл бұрын
That's because it is plastic, however I'm pretty sure it's glass fibre reinforced (based on a cut test) and probably nylon. I don't see much advantage to having like 10 positions on the shaft but if you do then fine, however having just a magnet instead of a lock is worse and the construction and materials are likely worse so it's more likely to break.

I don't think it's a case of copying, it's just an effective way of showcasing small products without the distraction of having someone in the shot. Also there are people that would like to maintain a semblance of anonymity. Take a look at mrpete222, he's been doing videos far longer than AvE and it's only been recently that he's showed his face in a few videos.

It's more of a style of filmmaking than copying. NurdRage was probably the first person I have seen with this style, about five years before Ave started his channel.

It's not a counterfeite just a copy. If it was it would claim to be a Wera and cost accordingly. Just a cheap copy.

It won't do the same job or at least for the same time. It will probably not last even 1/10th of the time so actually long term it's more expensive than buying a Wera.. Wera tools if looked after will be good for decades. I've started buying old West German tools, made before re-unification in 1990, also old made in Sweden Bahco products, made before they started outsourcing manufacture. These are tools which can last a lifetime.

Wera is always nice. It is a decent copy though. This thing had to be $10 or less. The Wera on average is $35-40 bucks when they are trying to get rid of some. While the shaft on the knock off isn't as pretty it offers more flexibility being longer + more detents. Overall China is fast approaching being able to bridge the quality gap.

In Chinese culture, they take great pride in making perfect copies of anything and everything. This mindset is 180° opposite from Western thinking. It is the western culture that created intellectual property laws. I am not defending this practice, I am merely explaining the difference in the way of thinking.If you understand the pride that Chinese take in creating perfect duplicates, although definitely not the same quality, it is easier to come to grips with the fact that there are millions of counterfeit products coming out of China.

they are fancy, maybe a bit too much. But definitely my go to tools. Basically love everything they make. Kinda stupid they don't have the blade profile on the back of the screwdrivers anymore, but that's probably because they couldn't align the picture with the blade unlike Klein and PB Swiss.
