Actually the care for ALL animals has a much higher standard here, since we have strict rules against animal cruelty/abusing. But still not everyone sees it in the same way and still puts their Hamster/Mouse/Rat/etc in too small cages. My Hamster and Guinea Pigs came out of this type of "care" and I'm really happy to give them a happier life now!

This is true also in nordic countries, northern europe. Pet care in UK and north america is weirdly outdated for us. What baffles me the most is all the plastic and especially the transparent plastic hides. We do not have paper bedding of rainbow colour beddings, we use natural beddings.

i adopted a robo hamster a couple of weeks ago now. i live in the UK and the pets at home worker was mentioning that their fur can get especially greasy to which i mentioned sand baths, and the worker told me that the hamster would ignore a sand bath as it wouldn’t not know what to do with it. i almost couldn’t believe my ears! as expected the first thing that my new hamster did was dive into her sand bath. it concerns me how little pet store workers seem to know about hamster care..

Sadly, most pet store personnel are only tought to sell products, the animals would also count as a product. Even a random (hamster spieces) wikipedia page has better info than you would usually get from a pet store owner or the staff.

And when we recently had this heatwave they didn´d sell any animals because the heat added with stress and a ride in a car would have been very dangerous for all rodents.

Frankly, if the pet stores in America sold suitably sized cages, and didn't sell the very tiny cages, most Americans buying hamsters would buy a proper cage. As it is it doesn't take long for many to realize the very tiny cages aren't large enough and research online either buying a 40 gallon breeder aquarium or the largest clear bin in stock at the nearest store that sells bins. Pet stores be damned! I have a 50 gallon/200 quart bin for the main habitat, and a 38 quart bin as the travel bin. the 38 quart bin is as large as most, not quite all, of the tiny cages pet stores sell, not much larger than a shoe box. The 200 quart bin is above 600 square inches, its the largest clear bin usually in stock, and the 38 quart bin is above 150 square inches, revealing the size of these very tiny cages sold in America...Unfortunately, the chain pet stores are more interested in greed, the moolah, than they are in proper animal husbandry... Bins are a great value, the large Niteangel 11-inch wheel cost more than the 200 quart bin, the nice Kaytee large wooden hide cost more than the 38 quart bin... Bins are easier to clean and provide much more area size than these very tiny cages that costs much more, especially that dinosaur monstrosity sold at Petsmart which woun't even make a good lawn ornament...

Thank you so much for educating me on hamsters. I've had my Syrian for a week, and I think I've been the best owner I can be. But my parents won't listen to me about getting her a bigger wheel and a bigger cage, they only believe what the shop keeper has said. I feel so bad about her only having a 350 squared inch cage. So luckily I let her have 3 hours walking time outside of her cage when she's awake.

I live in Belgium and it is very easy to have hamster stuff that comes from Germany (it is one of our neighboring countries). Most of my stuff comes from Rodipet or Zooplus. The quality of their products is pretty crazy and their mentalities level well-being hamsters (animals in general) is the most developed I’ve ever seen. I think that for animal welfare Germany is an example to follow! The product I’m most pleased with is birch litter, which I frankly think is one of the best litters I can find. Since it is not softwood it is not toxic for hamsters. It holds the hamster galleries well and is 100% natural. It’s a shame that in my country (and in a lot if others country) it’s so hard to find... Instead, we’re being fed softwood litter, the worst thing we can have!

i think whats really helping hamster care in germany is definitely the hamster forum! i think you might have even mentioned it in a different video! usually whenever you google a question related to hamster care in german no matter how specific someone else has already asked that question and got a proper and well thought out response from the forum members. its such a great resource and its great that almost everyone who actually wants to put in the work for hamster care eventually lands on the forums. websites like these are super important even if a "forum" might seem outdated nowadays it could never be replaced by algorithm driven social media sites like twitter etc. (even if youtubers like you do provide a ton of information! on this website here but youtube has definitely made it more difficult to find what someone is looking for because even on the search pages they throw in so many unrelated "recommendations") the forum is very organized, they have a lot of resources about proper care and diet and enclosures right at the entrance and its played such a big part in upgrading my own personal (outdated) hamster knowledge

THANK YOU for making this video! It´s so important! 💖 I´m from Germany and unfortunately a lot of people don´t know about those care standards (or just ignoreing them...). :( But the more people talk about how to care properly for hamsters, the more people will change their mind. So please keep going!

Thank you as always for a beautifully concise video! You always know how to say things in such a way that everyone wants to listen. I hope more people consider the German layout, it's so good for little rodant friends! Can't ever go wrong with more space, deeper bedding , and encouraging natural behaviors! You are the best small pet channel on KZbin, more people need to get on board the VR caring information train lol!! Keep up the beautiful work ! 🐹❤

The inches and centimetres weren't perfectly translated, the minimum entrance for a dwarf (5cm) is 2 inches and (7 cm) is 2.5 inches, the translation of the north American minimum cage measurement is also wrong in cm 💕😇 I'm a proud German hamster owner and what you said is true ahah lysm! 💕
@VictoriaRaechel
@VictoriaRaechel 5 жыл бұрын
5cm is 1.9 inches, 2.5 inches is 6.3cm. The measurements were correct but thank you. The north american measurement was supposed to be 38cm but it got mixed up to 83 a simple mistake.

I worked in an animal shelter in Germany for many years as a volunteer and I have to say, that the standards changed a lot to the better over the years. Not just for Hamsters. I would do many things different in pet care today, than I did 20 years ago.

Wow, I really admire the German care standards! Unfortunately though, since I live in a dorm my two hamsters only have 660 sq.in of space. (They both have the bin cages I could fit in my room) I guess that means when I move to a bigger place, I should upgrade them.

I have winter white ham, I live in germany and listened to shop employee recommendations to get whatever minimum I needed(initial costs were quite hefty for me), now the hammy just turned 2 years old, is as healthy and happy as ever and its large cage is full with toys, tunnels and hideouts, all natural, I also order food online and go to pet shop pretty much only for protein mixes of insects and shrimps, my hamster lives and eats much better then I do.
