tripsaplenty Scientists and artists? Yes, indeed. But what I think about are the descendants that the childless soldiers never had or ever will have. Unknown lines of descendants of children, grandchildren, and on and on, never to be born to carry on the soldiers’ blood and legacy.

I am from Bangladesh. In my city here about more than 500 graves of European soldiers who got killed by Japanese army and air strikes. Whenever i went there i feel these fallen soldiers must had their families waiting. Many indian soldiers also fought on british side and never returned. May all those lives rest in peace. Need to do somthing to stop war throughout the world. 😥

@nielscarp I would disagree intensely. If anything , one could argue that more Allied soldiers fought for ideological reasons being that you can actually count actual volunteers rather than just drafted conscripts. Most Germans were pulled into service, and told various reasons for the fight but ultimately those especially in the East realized they were fighting to simply defend elements of the Fatherland from soviet pillage. The average German was not fighting for some NSDP party slogan

You are over playing the civilian death toll, it was c600,000. Germany due to its murderous policies against non combatants which had no bearing on the winning of the war deserved their fate.

In Dresden 250.000 dead women and children. In only one city!!! Of course, the allies speak about 25.000. The bomb raids of the allies was a war crime, which was never seen before and after.

@nielscarp Of course not, nor would any sane person. That's not what I was trying to get across at all. My point was that to the draftee soldier , without any information but what was given to them from state run newspaper and radio ... was driven much less by ideology than by survival, defense of the fatherland, and to a limited amount even diluted revenge. Were there crazed exceptions? Of course ... but the party meant little but economic advancement to the common grunt.

@MagicMutilator6000 When was a cemetery 'demolished'? link? And why would they? Schönholzer Heide und Tiergarten still stand in Germany today for fallen Soviet soldiers. I couldn't imagine Russia risk losing (beautiful) monuments for their fallen to destroy a small German military graveyard.
