The reason for these empty 'halls' is that they were a part of the protection. If you leave empty cavities in the roof, bombs will explode partly in empty air and release the pressure. It's cheaper to make than having a solid concrete.

And most especially to see such rare sights, as the corner guard position, and the whole sub pen from the bottom, the top, and, the dry dock gate. I doubt very few have ever seen it all like this, and very, very, few have ever seen the guard post , or been able to play with the shutters! Until 1995, a submarine bunker in Hamburg's Vulkanhafen harbour still housed three submarines. They were largely cannibalised by the British and then the bunker was to be blown up. However, this did not work out as planned. The structure was too massive. Sand was then filled in in 1995. At the beginning of the 2000s, the remains were blown up again with moderate success and then further demolished. Today, the entire volcanic harbour has been filled in and a car park has been built on the buried bunker remains along with the submarines.

I was in that bunker, Elbe 2, before the sand and demolition. I had interviewed Gerhard Thater, the skipper of the one with the bunker section fallen on its tower. I took a lot of pictures and shot video. One of these days I will edit them together and post them here.

Hitler built this for his thousand years Reich. He meant for it to last. Even with the workers working fast to finish it, it is still standing. It’s a testament to the impressive work of people of this time. I wonder if the square cutouts in the walls were attachment point for equipment to build this huge structure? I do hope developers don’t get their way and try to destroy this historical site. Thanks to your friend for allowing you to share this amazing site.

My father was a merchant marine Ship Captain. The U Boats never hit his ship when on convoy. He wanted to be a fighter pilot but he was stuck being a Captain on a ship. Later he got a new ship and spent the rest of the war in the Pacific.I spent my life at sea never wanted to do anything else. Seeing your shows are great I enjoy them all. When I was young I spent months at Dutchharbor it was in 1960 the Navy left everything when they left after the war. I remember the submarine base there I would explore all of the old military positions on the Island. It was still mined in some places so you had to stay out. When I was fishing and doing salvage work I worked with men that were in the German military as well as for the allies. Everyone got along well they were part of history and it was a privilege to know them all.

It wasn't until you and EE went down the stairs to the bottom of the pen that I really got a sense of the size of this place. Amazing that you received permission to tour the place and were able to document it!!! That gate folds!!! Crazy!! Pics of the U-Boats in the place was great to see. Top corner visitor and the shutter moved!! Awesome! What a huge area for storage and workshops! Soldier footprints in the concrete from the construction who probably were watching over the workers as they put n the concrete, set forever for us to see! Great stuff!!

Those square cutouts that were visible on the exterior of the structure run the span of the building. Their intention is to absorb shockwaves caused by bombing raids. The shockwaves caused by ordinance detonating on top of or above a building that travel through the structure usually cause more damage to the integrity of the structure than the intial explosion itself. These open chambers suppressed shockwaves and substantially lessened them as they traveled down through the structure. The Germans were among the first to implement this system of safe guards into their construction, which is the main reason aerial bombing runs were unsuccessful against these sub pens. The allies made attemps to use "skipping" torpedoes to target these pens, but even those were marginally unsuccessful as well. It is truly an amazing video, and i really appreciate you sharing it with us! Thank you for all your hard work. Greetings from the USA!

I know I seem to say it about every new video, but seriously, this has to be one of your best so far lol. You immersed us in the history of the Battle of the Atlantic, which is truly mind blowing to see. My dad was on both merchant ships and in the Royal Navy during that time, so there is a connection here. I'm blown away by the size and extent of those buildings. That was so great that your friend was able to get you so much access inside of the U-boat pen. It was so amazing to see all those areas especially the guard tower area. Fascinating to see this! May 6, 1945 the last German U-Boat (or 2nd to last) U-853 was sunk off the coast here in Rhode Island. All 55 crew members are still in the hull with the exception of 1 which some recreational diver decided to bring up. It was built in Bremen in yard number 1059

I went to the massive bunker in Bremen when I lived in Germany back in 2018 and snuck into an off limits area. There was still a bunch of contruction debris left there from the end of the war just thrown into a pile. Cool to see. You should go there.

I live in Sweden and work with heat-pumps, i was to a new customer to install a heat-pump and was amazed of the building, it was a large villa next to the sea and everything was made of concrete, the construction looked like the U-boat bunker, and when I asked about the former owner i was told that the guy was from Ukraine and had been building U-boat bunkers in Germany in the second world war!

I always enjoy your videos. It's so encouraging to see how EE is growing and learning at your side. I can agree that the Germans had brilliant engineers, and often good designs. But as a U.S. citizen of 72 years, my Father fought in WWII against the Axis powers. Please keep in mind that many of us have family members that were wounded or died in the conflict. My Uncle Corwin was shot down and killed in a bombing run over Germany. When I think of the enslavement of thousands and thousands of workers, the many death camps & the Holocaust; I just can't be so enthusiastic at what they built. But I always learn from your videos, and I appreciate that.

Guard corner was pretty basic but effective for MG34 and MG42's I was hoping you would go up there and you did, it takes a curious man to investigate what's behind a wall or door. In some ways the U Bunker is like a Veste with openings for shooting arrows from many angles. The war was a proving ground for German ingenuity.

The system used is similar to the Pedestrian Underpass that are under Railway Stations for getting the water out when it gets flooded. The floor is slopped to the center where there is a deep pit with what's called a submersible pump that when turned on, pumps the water out into the gutter on the street above.
