One additional bit of censorship not mentioned here is the complete silencing of Zombies when they're on fire. There's even a comment in the code highlighting this: "Zombies should scream continuously while burning, so long as they are alive... but NOT IN GERMANY!". As some additional background info, the localization for Valve's games starting with HL2 and going through at least The Orange Box was done by a company called SDL International. According to them, they're the ones who reviewed and selected the voice actors, carried out the recording sessions, and, by their own words, "validated" the voiceovers with their own "stringent linguistic quality assurance processes" before sending them over to Valve. Ergo, any faults are their fault, aside of course from Valve not scrutinizing their work well enough. And regarding the lack of credits to any of the localization actors mentioned at 8:11, they are actually fully listed out, but only in the credits of Lost Coast. The problem is, Lost Coast never displays any credits. Nonetheless, we can view the text strings in the lostcoast_german.txt file and other languages, and that's how we know the identities of the localization casts.

I read about the zombie screams, Schnittberichte says they do scream, but you can barely tell. So either it cuts off instantly or they lowered the volume as much as they can. I also just checked the files and you're right, there's a file in Loast Coast's folder that lists the actors (the one in the HL2 folder just lists the English ones)! However, it only lists the few actors that I already mentioned, but not the Combine for instance. I was hoping to find out who the other voices were that way, that's unfortunate. They didn't even list the fisherman, who has a new voice entirely!

@@GermanPeter As @MarphitimusBlackimus said, it's SDL International who localized the game and for a question of budget, recorded all the languages in England. And I have a theory: they call Olivier Deslandes (French Barney) to direct at least the French, Italian, German and Spanish dubs as he did for Metal Gear Solid (he said that in a french interview). That's why casts for these languages seem to have been taken straight from MGS You know, like you I spent a lot of time searching for info about the french voice actors, all their roles, quirks in the recordings and voice effects, what happened during the recording sessions etc. And thanks to your video I found new informations I wouldn't even have found as I don't speak a word of German. Thank you!

@@Artcat932 The same way we basically do it. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which is the oxygenation of blood outside of the body. Basically your blood gets sucked out and it gets pumped with oxygen in a machine and then pumped back into you. Instead of pumping your oxygenated blood, it just replaces it.

In fairness to the German voices for the Metrocops and Combine Soldiers, they very much share the same voice actor in the normal game, to the point where Valve themselves even used Metrocop voice lines for the Combine Soldiers twice in the series. Once at the start of Anticitizen One where Dog throws a van at two soldiers ("Got him again, suspect is my 10-20 at--") and once in Episode 2 where you reach the top of Silo 2 and are spotted by a Soldier manning a gun emplacement ("There he is!" Is a Metrocop line, followed by an actual Combine Soldier voice line "Suppressing.") The Combine Snipers also reuse Metrocop voice clips. "Shit!", "Watch it!," "That's a grenade!" If I recall correctly. So it doesn't surprise me to hear the Metrocops and Combine Soldiers are not very distinguishable voice wise, it's pretty accurate to the English version in that respect. Edit: Holy cow. I kinda have to take your word for most of the voice acting quality because I don't speak German, but WOW, the German Vortigaunt is instantly a massive standout. That's awesome.

Little fun fact about Judith Mossman's German VA: She also voices GlaDOS! Even in the little sidequest in Cyberpunk 2077! And Ger-Man's VA is italian and voiced G-Man in the italian dub as well. Peter, I believe the rebels at 59:00 are trying to say of of their jeers, "HAHA! Like that?!" as in asking the target they just killed if they liked the pain or the way they are being treated. Instead what I think happened was that the translators saw the script out of context and read it as a thinking sound and the rebel asking if they did it right, or something so "Hmm, like that?" got translated a bit too literally into "Hmm, so?" hope this clears things up!

It's funny how you talk about how the Voicecast wasn't credited in the game. I've been working with some German voice actors lately and have thought about the same, especially since there is no good database for game voice credits (unlike for other German media). I've hunted down most of Portal 2's and Half-Life 2's voices and thought about creating a database for game credits myself, with some input from my industry friends. So maybe it's finally time I jump in this full force...

53:13 this is actually a glitch that occurs in the base game as well, not just the German dub. no matter how far away you get from here, the first line will seem like she's right up in your face and the rest is based on how far away she is. if you get to this part again in another playthrough, try running into the tunnel as fast as possible, you'll hear the line clearly and the rest will be almost silent

A good video gave me KZbin recommendations for New Year's Eve. I also advise you to consider the Russian localization. We have two of them. The first one from Valve (there's some complicated story there, but I don't really understand it), which was broken at first, but then it was fixed by fans, such a voiceover was for HL2 and the first episode. And the second one from the Buka company, which came out much later for HL2 and both episodes. I especially advise you to check out G-Man. He is gorgeous in both versions, I don't know who voiced him in the Valve version, but in the Buka version he is voiced by one of the best actors of Russian dubbing Nikita Prozorovsky (in Russia he also dubbed the Emperor Emhyr in the Witcher 3, Eskel and the Professor in the Witcher 1 (in the third part, Eskel is voiced by another actor), Gordon from the Batman trilogies by Nolan and Scooby-doo and Shaggy)

Since I am germany myself I used to play the german versions all the time back then and the entire time you were talking about the voice acting I was constantly thinking "something doesn't add up why don't I remember it this way?" which was especially confusing since I played through this game hundreds of times. I had no idea they changed anything. I also have to say that I find the original voice lines mostly superior to the newer ones, especially Dr. Kleiner is far superior in my personal opinion but that might just be nostalgia doing it's thing.

A classic tale of you get what you pay for. But I also wonder the experience of the person directing the cast. If you're just reading lines of a script without any context it's super hard to interrupt and this is where the director needs to come in with context and help guide or... dare I say... direct the actors. And as pointed out by MarphitiumsBlackiums the translation and transliteration are super important here. Sounds like that SDL company really did not put in a strong effort.

15:40 A lot of people forget that the combine soldier’s dna is not explicitly modified, nor are their emotions removed completely. Combine Soldiers, from what we see of newer models and old unclothed ones, are human beings, likely having their sensory organs synthetically replaced (their rough white skin is likely synthetically artificial, and their eyes are replaced to the helmet eye sockets). However, they still react to danger, in many sound files of their chatter, you have instances of them being confused, stressed, and panicked. (Their reactions to grenades, exclaiming “Shit!”, or the dumbfounded ness in the combine soldiers chatter in Nova Prospekt to seeing the restrictors become disengaged, bugs being tamed, and the prison being raided by one man. Soldiers are still offered pleasure and prizes (non mechanical reproduction simulations, rations…) in fact it’s more than likely they keep the soldiers in check, having their memories suppressed or even fake memories and thoughts downloaded.

I remember Sonic games since Generations and Resident Evil games since 7 listing all of the voice actors for every language in the credits. This is something that should be done for every game and for movies too. At least Wikipedia has a list of the cast and the dub actors for movies almost every time, even for obscure films like the Yakuza Live Action adaptation (Yes, that exists, even has a German dub). It's a flip of a coin, if Wikipedia pages of games have a list of the voice actors, which sucks.

I feel a kind of kinship with German Half-Life 2 as well. I've been playing it to help improve my German, which I've been learning as a second language for two years now. It's been with this game that I've been noticing how much I'm finally able to comprehend now and how far I've come. To be honest, I didn't take much issue with most of the voice acting, save for Gman. I didn't really pick up much of the quirks of the voice acting during my ongoing playthrough. Then again, neither did I notice the off-the-charts cheesery of Sonic Adventure 2's voice acting back when I played it as a little kid, so perhaps it'll come more apparent to me as time goes by and I become more immersed in the language. Anyway, great video!

I am really enjoying your channel showing off all the censorship in some older German games, many are my favourites. Have you thought of doing Quake 4? This one made some really clever and tasteful changes like sparks instead of blood when attaching enemies, sterile walls rather than blood splatters and best of all the scene were you're getting cut up on the conveyor belt and turned into strong was removed but instead was replaced by panning shots of the corridors and the screams etc so you knew what was happening to your character, you didn't see it but you felt it.

im gonna say it, I really like the German G-man dub! he sounds very menacing yet official, with that otherworldly quality the English version has!

That was pretty interesting, especially the part where they changed the performanced voice lines, you may be the only person who ever noticed this that it was changed. But as soon as i've heard the old performances, some neurons in my head went on because thats exactly the way how i remembered them, but it has been a very long time since i've played it in german. There could also be something weirder going on, since i live in austria and we mostly got Valve games uncencored, maybe there could also be the case that the german version and the austrian version get different voice files? Maybe they just threw them into the Steam pipeline with different region designation but didn't check if its the same files or on purpose for some reason? I know, weird theory, i would need to check if the old voices are still intact for me. Whats also worth mentioning is that in the Cinematic Mod are for german players new voice actors and new lines since the guy who made the mod is also german. But what he did was he made everyone talk edgy like in a Fast and a Furious movie, there is a reason why people don't like this mod very much. lol

Combine soldiers do have free will and personality, sort of. They swear and stuff (they swear when they're about to be killed by a grenade in English hl2), and they can sound casual, pained, angry and scared. But we're not entirely sure how they work. It seems they must have some level of free will though. Breen also talks to the combine soldiers in a speech as if they were self aware. and this is all in the english version btw.

I can see that, but I think they're pretty lobotomized for the most part - able to understand and issue commands, but not enough brain power to act on their own. A Combine soldier for instance is unable to actually rise up against the Combine, unlike the Metrocops.

@@GermanPeter Yeah, If that's what you meant than I agree. They definitely can't resist or dessert. I think there is an implication that all combine soldiers are actually artificial psychopaths. If you look on the helmetless combine soldier model Easter egg in nova prospekt, you can see that the parts of the brain relating to empathy have been removed. There's also the abandoned coast house, in which two burned rebels can be found outside, guarded by combine soldiers. However, if you go inside this raided house, you will find a dead rebel who was clearly gunned down during the raid. He also hasn't been burned. This implies that the burned rebels outside where not burned to dispose of them, but as a torture method.
