I have a couple of those Wera screw grippers and while at first glance it seems like a useful accessory because you can use it on almost any screwdriver eliminating the need for a bunch of speciality screwdriver that many of us don't use that often. Unfortunately, they don't work very well mainly because they are just too big to get into a confined space. The one I have is nearly 3/4" in diameter, use it with a 1/4" pan head screw and the little ears spread out almost an inch. I also have a older Wiha that works very well but, again, the end is a little bulky. My current favorite are the ones from Felo that use two little metal "fingers" to hold the screw (#50078). Nice compact profile and my only quibble is that the "fingers" seem kind of delicate.

The Plus-Minus Head screwdriver as you call it is commonly used on electrical outlets and switches found in the home. I look at them as a cross between “Slotted-Phillips-Roberts” head. Klein calls theirs a “combi” head driver and they come in two sizes, a ONE and a TWO. I use the #1 all the time when working on outlets and switches. I’ve found that using a slotted or Phillis driver will usually cam out the head of the fastener.

That ratchet was the flagship of the Cologne fair this year; they hang one forging die of 300Kg from the handle of this ratchet... I saw this tool there and I was impressed. the build quality is very good. good adquisition :)

I've been using the Wera Hold Function Torx bits for some years now and they work to hold the fastener because of the tapered Torx profile done on the tips (it's wedges itself to provide the hold). They can hold the fasteners really tight, especially when removing them. They do require some caution during use though: you must ensure the bit is inserted into the fastener or else you run the risk of marring the face of Torx fastener as the bit free-spins without any engagement. You'll find out when you use them.

I'm a big fan of hazet although expensive they make brilliant tools. Ever thought of doing a half inch ratchet showdown? Would especially like to see how the wera zyklop would hold up next to the competition. Keep up the good work gtr.

Wow that Hazet ratchet is badass! 738 ft-lbs?? My only question is how the hell would you put that kind of force on it? It has a short handle so there's no way you're putting that kind of torque out with your bare hands. And the awkward shaped grip/handle would make using a pipe extension unfeasible. I wonder why they didn't put a longer handle on their strongest ratchet?

In the UK we have Pozi drive more than Philips, about 70/30 but you still see guys using the wrong tool on them, I can imagine how much worse it is over there where Pozi is still rare. Let's not even mention JIS!!!
@erikjohansson18146 жыл бұрын
Harvey Smith JIS is pretty uncommon outside of Japan. I am almost neighbour with Japan but hardly come across their standard. But you are right, JIS standard mixed with any other standard equals damage most of the time.
@harveysmith1006 жыл бұрын
You would be surprised. Most people don't notice that they are JIS, thinking they are just Philips. Most Japanese motorbikes around the world have JIS on them. I drive a Japanese Toyota LandCruiser, that has JIS. I have even seen JIS on a door closer in a building in the UK. Look for a small dimply in the head of the screw, that tells you it is a JIS. Once you start seeing it you will see it more and more.

Hi. Not sure I agree. Maybe in some more modern homes (mostly still slotted here) but not in automotive, electrical, mechanical stuff. My pozi screwdrivers don't get much use but I could be in the minority.
@mrbadger99206 жыл бұрын
In the uk the only place you use Philips is plasterboard screws and cheap shit free issue stuff that comes in the little plastic bag with stuff like coat hooks etc But those screws may as well be made with cheese as they are so soft and weak. Slotted is only usually used for machine screws or, if wood screws, for decorative purposes nowadays as it really needs to be wound in by hand
@harveysmith1006 жыл бұрын
Cheese screws, yup, I have used a few of them!

As an electrician, you never want to see torx screws in a panel, that's what #2 Robertson's/slotted combo screws are for.
@phi3766 жыл бұрын
Why? Personally, I hate all the different types of fasteners. I wish everything would just gravitate towards one standard, like torx.
@sparkydstoolboxtalk10246 жыл бұрын
From my experience torx drivers just don't handle stubborn screws that have been sitting in a panel after it's been in use the way that slotted or Robertson drivers handle them. I've yet to damage a slotted tip or Robertson tip in a panel, but have stripped a torx driver. Also with combination head screws there is still a chance to loosen the screw if you strip the square portion of the screw. If you strip a screw head that excepts only one driver type you are left with drilling and tapping, which no customer will ever want to see when you schedule a power shut down.
@maxmustermann14555 жыл бұрын
@@sparkydstoolboxtalk1024 Well, I'd rather strip the driver than the screw.

Milwaukee ECX bits could also be used on those breakers. You should do a comparison between the ECX bits to a pozi slotted bit
@boelwerkr6 жыл бұрын
The thing with the slotted + cross screws comes from a Euro-Norm (i think it's directly copied from a DIN) Cross-head skews are seen as less reliable with high torque. So in application where higher torque is needed they need to have a additional slot. Philip scews are not normed the way Posidrive is (id can't remember the details). And so slotted-Posidrive screws are the norm in Europe for electrical installation. This norm is not that old. I have 20 or so sotted-skews only 16A breakers in a drawer. They got thrown out when the Norm was introduced.

I've got some of these old circuit breakers too. 30 years old L-characteristic with slotted screws, B-characteristic from mid 1990s with PZ 2 and the newest ones are with PZ2/SL.

Interestingly, to me, is that wall outlets come in SL/PH2 here in Germany. In any case, I do strongly second your motion to switching to TX.
@EditioCastigata6 жыл бұрын
FYI, modern bike parts manufactured by Shimano have SL/PH2, too, albeit not as common as hex or torx. For example, derailleur limit screws are (M4 ×)SL/PH2.
@maxmustermann14555 жыл бұрын
Older breakers are SL/PH2 as well. Which sucks. Got a bunch of SL/PZ2 drivers which were included in sets. But I hardly ever use them. I'm mostly doing customer service, servicing old panels from the late 80s early 90s.

Yeah they are still functional which is why I kept some of the ones they had to get rid of. It is just that you can't in good conscience deliver a panel to a customer if you know one of the breakers has a messed up screw.

Regarding that 1/2" ratchet.. it is all a bit of mumbo jumbo and trying to sell something as gold when there is no reason to. If you ever have to exceed more then ~25ft lbs on a 1/2" wrench, you will be going towards a torque wrench instead of continuing to wrench down by hand. Ive never broken a 1/2" ratchet or socket due to knowing when it is time to step up and use the right tool for the right job.
@imacrazyguy58316 жыл бұрын
Either way though, it would be fun to see how it compares to counterparts like snapon and the like! :)
@kylesonsalla76205 жыл бұрын
I've literally hung on, and jumped on, snap on 1/2 drive long handle ratchets to get stuff apart(300+ lbs x 36" ratchet=900+ ft lbs of static torque, even more with movement). 25 ft lbs is nothing for what a tool will actually see when being used.
@jcsuperstars11006 жыл бұрын
The Hazet ratchet is nice but it's too short. Why make it so strong but so short? If it's so strong why not make it long enough to take advantage of it's strength. Fail.
@johnnyasus866 жыл бұрын
JC Superstars that's what company's do, they advertise it as being strong but make it small enough to where you will never be able to achieve that torque rating unless you put a pipe on it, and if you do it ruins the warranty unless is a snapon
@chriscas-ToolAficionado6 жыл бұрын
It's probably a matter of time before they release a long and extra-long version. They just introduced this new ratchet so it's pretty normal for companies to release it in the standard length first.

PZ 2 should fit too. Differences between Pozidriv (PZ) and Phillips (PH) screwdrivers: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/70/Poziphillipscompr.jpg Actually PZ is an improved version of PH to reduce cam-out. The holding function of the bit is propably its serrated surface... What are you doing with these Z-characteristic circuit breakers? They're normally for high impedant grids, their magnetic short circuit detection already trips between 2 and 3 times of the rated current. Standard here is B-characteristic, there it is 3 to 5 times of the rated current. Or C in workshops (5 to 10 times). Inrush currents can sometimes be quite high, on PCs for example, so the Z-characteristic circuit breaker would trip quite often. Especially if you have a low impedant grid.
