Germany's Dachshunds Under Threat as Government Proposes Breeding Ban
The Dachshund breed of dogs could be under threat in Germany, its national kennel club has warned. The club has cited a new draft law that looks to prohibit the spread of various canine characteristics. The bill has been introduced as part of the Animal Protection Act, which seeks to clamp down on "torture breeding". According to the German government, this type of breeding practice results in the reproduction of dogs with traits that cause "pain, suffering or damage". The law could affect the Dachshund and a number of other dog breeds, whose characteristics have been classed as "abnormalities".

My best friend breeds dachshunds. In all fairness, I do think that they have changed significantly and their backs have gotten increasingly longer and their legs increasingly shorter. I think that stream exaggerated features whether it be the dachshund, the pug, the French bulldog, etcetera, breeds with predispositions to severe spinal issues, inability to breed due to brachiocephalic structure, or extremely exaggerated angulation like in the American show line German Shepherd are all unethical and should be banned.. preserve the dogs, they should just alter the way they breed them so that they are breeding healthier structure, not simply what humans think is cute

Totally agree ~ I had an "imperfect" mini-dach born in 1980. Mitzi had a less elongated back and longer legs than the designer breed and had no back issues.

This is a good move because this is not how the dog originally looked, and it to be longer breeding has caused it to have many ailments

I think the American show line German Shepherd or any German shepherd with severe angulation in the hind quarter or a curved spine should also be banned. If you look at the working lines of German Shepherd their structure is beautiful and that is what should be bred not the crazy roach back and over angulated hind legs. I completely agree, they should ban those types of breedings as well as any dogs that have hyper exaggerated features like the dachshund, pug, French bulldog. This will not be the end of the breeds, it will just encourage breeding healthier dogs of the breeds

Because the breed changed MUCH from the original dog. Look at the old photos... It needs to go back to the original working, HEALTHY look, or be banned completely. And not only this breed.

Beutiful dogs I have a meniature male he is 12years and have his ID that states his birth and that he was bred legaly and both parent dogs where pure blood.

Okay that's great but guess what they are prone to spinal issues because of the length of their back. The original dachshunds did not have as long as a back and as short of legs. People started breeding this because they thought it was cute. Personally I think we can still have dachshunds, but they should not breed extremely exaggerated features, backs so long it looks absurd

My mini-dach was viciously attacked by a pitbull, but luckily pulled through thanks to emergency surgery, though never fully recovered to what she was before the attack. I don't dislike all pitbulls simply because the guilty one that attacked my Mitzi had an irresponsible owner. Every dog is different depending on a multitude of factors.
