One problem was the Germans faced was the unexpectedly stiff resistance some of the surprised Allied units showed. Plans called for just blowing through these units, but when they failed to do so and were stalled for even a short span of time, it threw off the plan's tight schedule.
@johnathanh2660 Жыл бұрын
The problem was 'further out'. If you imagine a box, with the British/Canadian troops (and some US) to the North; and US troops to the West and Patton's 3rd Army to the South there is no way for the German to 'punch out' of this box. So, while the focus is on what happened *in* the box: St Vith and Bastogne there was no prospect that the Germans could get to Antwerp. There was also a unit of US combat engineers that systematically destroyed bridges as the Germans advanced, which helped use their fuel reserves. Finally, Montgomery saw the danger early and he pivoted his forces. He also took command of 'Northern sector' US forces (Eisenhower's orders), via the British liaison officers embedded with the US units. In short Montgomery had better control of the Northern sector than Bradley did. Northern sector (mostly US) artillery brought the attack to a halt before BOTH Northern sector AND Patton's troops counter-attacked. One of the earliest units that counter-attacked was the British Parachute regiment. This was shortly before the weather broke, and the rest is history. Unfortunately due to Montgomery's poor political judgement (a press conference) the British/Canadian involvement had to be downplayed, so it has been presented as a 'wholly US' op.

You didn’t mention that the entire ‘Battle of the Bulge’ had a very specific goal. Capture Antwerp, cut the Western Allies off from the port, significantly delaying victory in the West. It was hoped by the German High Command that this would enable Germany to sue for a separate conditional surrender enabling them to fight off the Soviets and prevent total defeat. Kampfgruppe Peiper’s had the role as spearhead and their atrocities were committed in the name of enabling a quick and decisive advance to capture a series of bridges. They failed to do this and the Allies moved forces to block and defeat them. Even if they had captured Antwerp,and held it - a virtually impossible task, there were not going to be able to achieve a separate peace in the West. But this was Hitler’s idea. Stop the Allies at the German border and survive to fight the Soviets. Without mentioning the objects (wishful thinking as they were). Launching the offensive at all, wasting Germany’s last reserved on one throw of the dice, makes no possible sense.

Kaufman) and the Morgenthau Plan (FDR's treasury secretary) that the plan the US had for a defeated Germany was one of anti-European genocide. This was born out in Eisenhower's Rhine Meadows death camps. The Germans knew this would happen which is why they fought until they could fight no longer.

The idea was not to force peace negotiations, but to capture the vital port of Antwerp, making a further eastward advance by Brits and Americans impossible. It was then planned to hold a thinly manned defensive line along the Scheltde while the bulk of German forces would be thrown against the advancing Russians. Without a port for resupplying their army a US offensive would not be possible, or so Hitler thought.. That's why Antwerp was so heavily bombarded in an attempt to make it useless as a port.
@lyndoncmp5751 Жыл бұрын
And because of the ground taken in Market Garden, a direct counter assault on Antwerp via the Ruhr was out of the question. Market Garden created a protective buffer zone in front of Antwerp from the Ruhr. So the Germans had to go the long indirect way.

This is a vast oversimplification of the battle with several very significant errors and omissions. The critical battles before St. Vith and those containing the subsequent German advances in the northern German thrust are almost entirely ignored. The armored units fighting with the 101st Airborne at Bastogne are omitted, too. The losing yet effective battles fought by the 28th Infantry division that kept the Germans from reaching Bastogne are not given their due, as are several other bitterly fought actions and the excellent performance of numerous cavalry, engineer and artillery units among others. Further, this was not the last major German offensive. Operation Nordwind, Dec. 31, 1944, was the last major German offensive in the west.

Perhaps the major consideration in planning Watch on the Rhine was the Western Front's proximity to the major German armaments and munitions industries and coal production, (Saar and Ruhr). Even if the Rhine was not crossed, the bulk of German heavy industry would be within artillery range and the German war machine doomed. By Nov-44, not only was fuel in short supply but so was nitrogen, so scarce that munitions were shorted of their full charge of explosive. So the plan was launched with the concurrence of Hitler's Minister of Armaments and Munitions, Albert Speer. Strategically, Western Germany was more important to continuing the war than was Eastern Germany. Additionally, Hitler felt the almost fanatical defense by soldiers on the Eastern front made up for shorting them of armor and supplies and thus divisions were withdrawn from the Eastern Front along with refitted divisions and reserves committed. (Following the Normandy invasion, more German armor was deployed on the Western than the Eastern front.) The alternative of not launching this massive offensive, slowly withdrawing to mountainous, defensible terrain to extend the war was in part dismissed because fuel, food, munitions and essential materials would have simply not been available, so there would have been no meaningful extension of the war.

Everyone of Hitler's strategic decisions was stupid, starting with Dunkirk. No wonder: He was only a corporal.

Just shows more that the Germans were actually better. Most of the endof the war was the USA being capable and throwing metric tons of recruits and bombs, ending the war, and the fact was the Soviets just happened to defeat the other invading force where they surrendered or just ran out of supplies. The Bulge was an 'ok' gamble, but the USA was really the biggest threat with all their materials and troops. The US glorifies so much but their strategy involved brainwashed soldiers who were told to paradrop and hold a spot, basically fight to the death, brainwashed by cartoons and propaganda.They were told to just endure it and die even if they were surrounded, now because they won they made it look so heroic but in reality the 101st and famed paratroops were used as 'delays' and 'human bait', otherwise they'd likely have just surrendered but instead wasted Germans costly time to dislodge them. If it was just one or the other, Germany probably would have won, and the USA alone would have either won or had to be forced into a treaty; Soviets alone would have lost. The brainwashed paratroopers who were tricked to die instead of surrender which made them harder to deal with. Germanys etiquette of war was actually superior, and telling them to surrender was actually working against them in this way (ironic, as they are now depicted as heartless) as they would have done better to immediately attack and kill them all instead of offer them a chance to surrender. Air supremecy was dropping so many bombs that German vehicles were always at risk, plus the USA giving similar training that the Germans had to infantry, meant their infantry wasn't that far behind, and it delayed and cost the Germans, because the USA shut down their home production and would have won in the end. Makes me cringe when people say the 'Soviets' beat the Germans but in a way if you had either group deployed without the other invading force there, the Germans likely would have succeeded; i.e. if it was just Soviets vs Germany or only USA vs Germany (where USA would likely still win, but Germany could have a chance then to defend and force a treaty). Soviets were taking massive casualties and way behind, they only really 'won' once Germany literally ran out of supply lines and bullets, they were just a contributory factory at best. The US was also teaching the squad tactics and had decent firepower/shooters in their army, they also had intelligence and could prepare themselves where clearly US was a match for Germany already when they invaded, fed directly by Britain, and they likely were even prepped to invade years before they officially declared war to ensure they had the right equipment to win.

Yeah, I know this is off topic, but every time I see a historical account of WW2, I imagine divisions of modern M-1 Abrams, HMARS, A-10s, F-15Es, AH-64s, etc. were to go back in time (ala "Final Countdown") to Europe and obliterate Hitler's minions.

Executing POWs is a terrible war crime. However, during a war where the defending side has barely enough food to feed its own army there is almost no other option. They can't take them prisoner as there are no facilities let alone food to feed them. They can't let them go because they'll end up back on the front where they are already outnumbered.
