Really well done and an awsome build Gerry. If you weld some 4" (10cm) tubes through the top or wrap them around the top. Then you can put a fan behind them and blow air through them. My dad used to work in a two bay garage up north in the states when I was a kid. That stove got that two bay garage so hot we would have to strip down to our T-Shirts in the middle of winter. I really like this design it looks really well planned and there seems to be no unburnt fuel wasted going up the stack,, thats what really got my attention as all the fuell is burned in the burn chamber and not being built up inside the exhaust pipe creating a possible chimmney fire..

I built a waste oil heater from a propane tank last year from plans I got at Mother Earth News. It's a totally different design and only rarely does it produce "savage" heat , as you put it. I'm going to modify it to work as this does. TOTALLY impressive!! I can't thank you enough for the great ideas you gave me!!!

Hi Gerry, thanks for making the whole series of videos. Your general thought process is brilliant. It's given me the solution to a few issues I had on my wood burner I made from two of the smaller gas bottles welded together. Now after viewing your burner it's all change here and I'll be converting to a "duel fuel" burner very shortly. I positively love the use of Pyrex bowls (my mrs won't though) Thanks again and a big thumbs up 👍👍

Hi mk2sixteen. I did a couple of burners in these videos. In earlier videos I used an Ozzirt type In later videos I made a blower type burner so I could convert a smaller existing boiler. Once made it can fit in minutes and works great. There are 2 disadvantages though noise and it needs power. I went through a few dishes because of expansion of the metal but they didn't mind the heat at all. Once given enough room to expand the problem was sorted. If you get a chance throw a video together and post a link. I would love to see it. Cheers Gerry

Hi George. The stove really outputs a serious amount of heat if you need it and if the oil is dialed down it will it will tame it also. It's great that it runs on solid fuel as well. Cheers

Nice stove. Barbecue paint should be able to handle the heat. I've used it on exhaust systems on snowmobiles and motorcycles and it holds up pretty well.

I dont know if it's said before, but for your paint problems the solution may be a mix from graphite and boiled linseed oil. Mix both together for a creamy consistency, paint your heater with it and then you have to burn it in. I mean you have to fire your heater up after painting. This is a very old recipe here in germany for use on every kind of ovens, heaters, smokers and so on... Dont know if it stands the 1000°F your heater reaches, but its cheap to test it on small sheetmetal which is heated and then you see the result. Give it a try :-) BTW: Your waste oil heater is one of the best/nicest i've seen so far!

Hi Pat. I just use 1 inch Malleable iron pipe. Plumbers call it gun barrel or GB pipe. copper pipe inside to protect the oil from burning. You can buy stove glass too if that suits. I used stove glass in my latest minion stove. Cheers Gerry

If you are still looking for a paint that will hold up to the heat, try VHT High Temp Header Paint. It is and Automotive paint used for racecar exhaust headers. It is rated for over 2000F.

Hi Steve. I did connect this burner up to a mock central heating system and I was able to heat 80 Us gallons 300 Liters in about 1 hour producing about 22.5 kw to the water and maybe another 5 to 10Kw from the burner. I made 3 videos of it running here's a link to one kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3bXZKV_o5p6f7s. With the newer burner from the latest videos it would be very easy install it into this type of central heating boiler. The boiler in this video was 70k btu and I maxed it out but even if the boiler had been of a higher outputsay 120 k btu 36kw I could have maxed it out too, easily. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry

Hi Marc. The flue was just some 6 inch flue that I had here. Its nothing special and once its about 4 meters high and 5 or 6 inches in diameter it will work well. In some of the later videos there is more footage of the flue. Cheers Gerry

Just happened on this video by chance after looking for ideas to convert an old propane tank into a wood-burning stove. Brilliant concept and, without seeing the earlier six episodes, what looks to be an elegant build. Good stuff! I understand that vapourising the waste oil is the key to its heat output and wondered if pressurising the oil and "injecting" it to the burn chamber might improve efficiency, the only downside to this would be having to filter the waste oil thoroughly to remove any "lumpy bits". Just off to watch the build from the beginning, cheers!

Hi James. A siphon nozzle setup would work well if you are atomising the oil for ignition. It would be easy enough to convert a conventional oil burner but would require a compressor as part of the kit. A big advantage with that setup is that it could be timed to come on automatically without needing a manual ignition. I might do a video on a siphon nozzle setup soon. Cheers Gerry

@@GerrysDiy Aftr giving this carefull thought i dontsee why you couldnt put a one way check valve inbetween the tank and the fuelsupply line close to the nozzle mabey outside the tank and fuel supply valve to keep the back pressure after the nozzle gets hot and vaporize the fuel inside the line and only givingit a one way exit ,,when the pressure equalizes with both sides the lincheckvalve then the ofuel will automaticlyfeed into the hotside of the feedline and keep a constantflow of pressurised fuel going into the burner,,this way you can also control the amount of fuel being feed into the burner as the fuel will really loose its viscousity and thin out when it gets hot and vaporizes ... mabey installing a surge protection device in the line would insure a steady smooth operation after the system gets up to operating temputure.What do you think about that? This alleviates the need for an outside source to pressurise the fuel. thiere would be no need to run an air compressor to keep the line pressurised and also keep the fuel moving in one direction only and prevent the fueltank from burping and possibly causing a fuel spill ?

Really great job.... Keep it simple and efficient. I like to see when someone have a will to twist the sleeves and get on doing something useful. As oppose, dumping the oil on the land. I am more of a biomass/waste wood guy. Never the less, I tend to use waste oil here and there. And one of my projects for the customer consists of combining waste wood and waste oil burner inside of a modified rocket stove heater. Be free to check it out... My brother works at a industrial paint company called Highland International. They may have a paint that will withstand extremely high temperatures. To my knowledge the smallest quantity they sell is 1 gallon. I don't know if that is too much or just right. Hope this helps, keep up the great work!

I love this! The Pyrex is a nice touch. If somebody hasn't already suggested it, I'd look for "stove black" stove polish. I used it on my wood stove for years. Don't know if it can be found in Ireland. I'd like to do this in my garage, but I'll consider building a brick enclosure, 14 or so inches high, for the bottom, back & sides with a steel-plate top; just in case of burn-through.

Hi Limb Reaper. I tried stove black but as soon as the stove glows red and cools down that's the end of the stove black. I have at this stage tried a few paints but when I crank up the heat the fire resistant paint goes up in smoke. A brick enclosure would certainly make this a safer project. Cheers Gerry

Just need the plasma and the old sofa because if I spend any more time in the shed I guess after the divorce thats where I will be staying. Excellent set-up! I particularly like your innovative use of the Pyrex dish. It's both handy to see the flame and one of the nice things about having a fire. The crackling sound is water in your oil. That will reduce your heat output... if it matters at all. Dry oil does work a LOT better in these burners. If you were interested in efficiency at all, you could run your Chimney pipe horizontal for a good few feet before ducting it out. You would find there is a lot of heat coming off that which would now be wasted. If you also had a small fan blowing along it, the heat would be better dispersed around the area you are heating. Congrats on a job very well done with this. It's definitely the neatest and most innovative burner of it's type I have seen. You have thought it through very well and come up with a great set-up. Great explanation and who doesn't love an Irish Accent! Well done to you Sir!

Hi Glumpy10. The first section of flue had a second internal wall but I removed it so as to emit more heat. The single wall cladding on my shed really needs to be insulated so that the heat stays around longer, another to do for the long list. Thanks for the comments Cheers Gerry
