Hello from Canada, Norman here, Wow thats one hell of a burner... The tin can I was referring to had 4 half inch holes at every 90 deg. Completely at the bottom of the can and my pipe in a pipe was a couple of inches over the can, so when the oil drips down it is instantly vaporised and does not ever make it to the can, the air that blowes in the middle of the can keeps it cool so it doesnt melt. Anyways I really love your videos, keep them coming. I wish I had more time to tinker with my stove, I will eventually post a video.
@GerrysDiy10 жыл бұрын
Hi Norman. I knew that the setup didn't even loosely resemble what you described but as the burner was already kinda setup I gave the dog some food and stole the can. This burner exhausts out of the sides so I put it to within 2 inches of the bottom of the can. The poor old can disintegrated later with the heat. I tried another burner this time blowing above the can and blowing directly into the can and while it did throw the flame out through the holes I drilled my fan wasn't producing enough air to test it properly. It then went on to blow the capacitor so I will need to pick one up before more mayhem ensues. The oil i was using was synthetic which is harder to burn but the burner doesn't care once it get going. I have Veggie oil for the next round of tests. . Thanks for the suggestion, it was cool giving the can a try. Cheers Gerry

Hello everyone. Free heat, Clean efficient burn and a very cheap stove project for the Diy minded. Here"s another video of a fan assisted waste oil burner. The burner has been bent in a hydraulic bender to aid airflow and the air exhaust changed in design to blow horizontal instead of vertical. As recommended by Norman a channel subscriber I tried exhausting the burner into a Tin can which was drilled strategically with surprising success. At the start of the video I show how easy and fast it is to install the burner into the prepared stove .Cheers Gerry

You should make a custom crusiable for the burner. Try plaster paris and heat resistant cement. Here is a mixture I found to work well. 3parts plaster paris / 1 part Cement / 2 parts Vermiculite / 2 parts water. Whish you would of shown what you was using for the air motor. Great video!
@UZI9MMAUTO8 жыл бұрын
One great suggestion. You should add heat sinks on the sides. This will take the excess heat that normally goes up the chute outside. It will make and keep more heat indoors. You can put you heat sinks either horizontal or vertical. I would go with the first as each plate will keep heat rising to the next plate above it and so on. For a blower motor use a 12 volt one from a car. You can use a 'dimmer' switch to control how fast you want the air intake to be. I would power the blower motor on deep cycle battery. All you need is either is a solar panel or deep cycle charger to charge the battery.

Hi Richard. It works really well for something so simple. I did a video a while ago where I added my Ozzirt version waste oil burner to a boiler with a water jacket. I connected this boiler to a 300 litre 80 us gallon water tank. Things went a little wrong but it makes a lot of heat and can easily heat water. Great work and Vid as usual Gerry. A couple of ways you could reduce the noise of the burner: Easiest to integrate into the current setup would be to either slow the blower down with something like a light dimmer if it suits the type of motor you have, or a rheostat. Other way would be to use a gate or ball valve on the air inlet pipe to regulate the air into the burn chamber. It seems that currently the burner is putting out way more heat than you need. In this case, you can reduce the air as well as the oil. Reducing the air will lower the noise and you only need enough to burn the amount of oil being consumed. ATM I would say you have a significant air excess and that will actually give your stove lower temps. The other way would be to go to something like a 2" air feed so the air volume is the same but the speed is reduced. This will quieten the flame noise. I am also wondering if a bigger pot would quiet the flame? As for the tin can burning up, Maybe a bit of stainless steel pipe would be the answer? I tried one of these down blow set-ups before and couldn't make it work but I think the trick may be to have the holes on the sides of the pipe not just coming out the end. You make yours look so easy I'll have to have another Crack at it.

May i suggest rolling some stainless steel screen roled up to relace tin can. There are many varieties in alloy, wire size, mesh per inch and percent open. It makes a good back-flash arrestor too. Certain metals may also add a catalytic effect: cobalt, molybdenum; plus ceramic paste like ceria, zirconia, etc... could be painted on to enhance. Some similar to lantern-mantles. This could get rid of CO, nitric oxide, etc... Thanks for cool video. Very interesting, fun.

I barrowed a few of your ideas and made a smaller burner to just maintain my shop temp without being too hot and buring too much waste oil.using your internal air system I put a 1-1/4" pipe perforated with 3/8" holes into a 4 inch thread on cap. Then cut a short (6" long) section of 4inch pipe and topped it with a 4x3 reducer. Welded some flat bar legs to the reducer and set it up so the cap is about 4" above the floor. Then ran some 3" stove pipe up and out the building. cooks away nicely with the internal air (your idea) and I only run this at about 0.3 litres per hour. holds the shop temperature well without too much heat and runs precious little oil. Thanks for your posting Gerry they lead to my own version and I have to say I would not have thought of the air pipe in the middle until I saw yours.

Make your burn pot out of something 1/2 inch thick that should be the best fire pot so it doesn't burn through remember forced air into a fire is like a blast furnace they can melt steel.

I already have a few standard riello and bentone domestic oil burners here to act as component spares for the next project. Cheers Gerry

Hi Gerry, I do enjoy your WO Burner videos. I am planing to build one for my shed for our coming winter here in Australia but I will be using waste veg oil as I have plenty of it. One thought for you had you considered on the burner tube where the air comes out the holes tilting the holes to one side by putting a bolt or rod in the hole and twisting it around the axis of the burner tube, so the air will come out at a angle rather than straight out side of the pipe, so as to spin the air in the combustion chamber. Just a thought as most burners seem to use some sort of rotation in the air stream. Cheers Wayne
@GerrysDiy10 жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne. I have thought of it alright. I was going to add 3 small pieces of 1/2 inch tube welded in at about 30 degrees off vertical from the 1 inch air tube. This would give it some rotational ability. As soon as I can find some tube I will give it a shot. I was going to clean out the stove this morning after many hours of burning and experimenting and it didn't need cleaning. This is a very good way to get heat. At this stage I am only tweaking the design but this burns really clean and is easy to make. I have plans for other ways of doing this so that means more videos I'm afraid. My website will be live soon also. Thanks for the suggestion Wayne. Cheers Gerry

Have you considered running a copper, or black pipe, coil in the upper chamber filled with water that would connect to a circulator pump then to either a hot water tank, or baseboard radiator? Great project but there is a lot of wasted space in that burner, you can make a coil of 3" pipe, going in and out of the burner and installing a small blower on on end, and you will get a lot of extra heat. If you have high temp blower from gas furnace, you can mount the intake in top of the stove so it can also suck the hot air and place the blower on the end.

Hi Tom. Galway is safe from my little experiments Lol. If you were to get a packet of firelighters and light it and then throw it into the bucket of oil it will just go out. A larger air supply tube with a diffuser can make the burn almost silent. Getting the flame swirl in the burner and as well as the combustion chamber is key to quite. Also adding air, even in small amount in other areas of the combustion chamber can help with mixing all to keep the velocities down. I stumbled on a near perfect combo in the shop heater I put together. It is a low hum at it's hottest running temp burning around 1 gal per hour, no smoke, and as it gets to temp I actually have to cut back on the air a bit. I hope to be able to get the same effect in the next build. Which is going to be from scratch with waste as it's intended fuel. Currently it's based on an upside down coal stove which has been modded several times. The best build so far is a pump for fuel. I do not have to filter, preheat, and regardless of temp the flow is based on volume. The different viscosity's or the change in room temp do not effect flow. I can even pump and burn the crusty paste from fry oil. It's like mud, but burns just fine!

That would be much more efficient for heating if you run the exhaust stack into a couple of 55gal drums, one drum welded above the other with a 8" hole in the top of the lower drum and the bottom of the top drum, then run your exhaust from the boiler, into the lower drum first, then the heat will rise into the lower drum and up through to the top drum, Heating both drums for more radiant heat, you could use much less oil for the same heat, then your exhaust stack to outside should vent or connect to the top barrel. adding two more 55gal. drum will capture a lot of heat for radiant heating. that way you get a lot more convection heat from the barrels instead of loosing it. I would also slow the oil down some, use a brass fitting for your oil regulator, you can make that setup a lot more efficient.
@GerrysDiy10 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary. Its true I could recover more heat from the flue gasses and there are more efficient ways of burning the waste oil but as is this little setup really whacks out the heat reliably for very little cost. I will be making a different atomising setup soon. Cheers Gerry

@GerrysDiy9 жыл бұрын
Hi. It is adjustable from 2 to 4 litres per hour. At 4 litres the stove will be bright orange and over driving but making massive amounts of heat. It is more relaxed at about 2.5 lph. Cheers Gerry

HI !!! I wanted to ask you based on your experience, what is the oil odor level in the room where the oil burner ignites? Would it be possible to heat a family home with this method? Did you do any chimney pollution test or test using a carbon monoxide measuring device? I am currently wanting to investigate to propose using this method in a community of people where we still do not have network gas and this option besides free is very practical, thanks from Patagonia Argentina

I've only ever had fumes during the initial lighting. Once going there is enough flow from the exhaust that any leaks from the doors, etc will suck air into the system. If you use a fan as an air intake blower, just make sure its flow doesn't exceed the exhaust flow. If you don't get fumes, you're good. I had never had the guts to actually move mine in the house. What I have seen is a guy the cookie is waste oil burner in a containment system, And then blew the hot air from the containment system into the house. A little safer. I have another friend that moved his waistoil burner inside the house and has never had a problem with it

Hey Jerry, I am still watching. Is that a vacum cleaner your using for air ? Thanks for video, love to watch them. Robert

Hi Robert. I had some standard oil burners here so I just used the fan in one of them to provide the air. I do have a couple of vacuum cleaners that will blow but they would melt the stove if I gave it enough fuel. Also they are about 1500w so a little heavy on the electricity for extended use. I was looking at bouncy castle fans on the net and some of them seem promising. The motor needs to be induction and continuously rated I think. Cheers Gerry

Just curious, while watching you go outside to show smokestack I thought I saw a vacum , supplying your air flow. If you ever get to the States,Get in touch ; Kentucky Derby coming up the 1st Saturday in May. Fast Horses Great Bourbon Fast And Lovely Women

That is a very nice heater. What are you using for a fan? Thanks! :)
@GerrysDiy9 жыл бұрын
Hi. ForkinCrazy I am just using an old oil burner with the electrics removed so that it is now just a blower. Anything will do really and in one of the videos I use a hairdryer just to show that this thing wants to work and needs very little help to get going. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6e0goqdYsyGra8 Cheers Gerry

Would it be a good idea to put a electric valve on the oil so that it would turn of the oil if the power went out

What is your fuel usage gals per hr with a steady even burn
@GerrysDiy10 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron. In normal use it will burn 1 gallon per hour and that is running it at mid range so if you need more heat it can be turned up. There is a lot of heat in waste oil so its quite economical considering the massive heat output. Cheers Gerry
