Hi Gerry! Thank you again for all these instructions. You are helping out many people from all over the world who have to pay a high price for heating. 2 weeks ago i built the same pipe version that you discribe so well in this video and am using it in a wood gasifier central heating unit. the pipe enters the furnace through a whole in the upper door(wood feed) and goes down to the lower part through the slot where the gasification takes place normally. There i set a small cast iron pan with a piece of 15 cm pipe for raising the sides of the pan. There is a cover on this pan 1 inch higher, it's a thick metal sheet with a 1inch whole for the pipe in the middle and many cuts from the grinder all around, crossing the center. This provides more contact of the flames with the metal to get a perfect burn and a minimum of residues in the exhaust. I tryed the babington version 2 years ago but it's much more trouble get everything running well AND that awfull noise of the compressor running all the time. I just ordered a flue thermostat to reduce the oil an air quanity when the they reach 250°C and there is also a heat exchanger in the exhaust which cools the flue 100°c down. Bye

To make clean NO SMOKE come out of chimney you need the chimney so that it is NOT at the very top. you need a space above that so the hot smoke air can travel up so the soot can be deposited there and the chimney lower. You will notice the difference of clean warm air comming out of chimney instead of black smoke. WE WANT ENVIRONMENT SAFE HERE.

$30 Shop Vac, set to blow, plugged into a dimmer switch (variable air control), mounted outside to reduce noise, if desired.
@MittyNuke13 жыл бұрын
Or one of those plug in leaf blowers, since they sometimes have variable air speed built in. Or an inflator pump, like for pool toys. But I agree with you on the shop vac. Home depot sells a $25 "bucket head" vac/blower which is awesome to use as a dirty water wet vac, but I think it would be perfect for this. You wouldn't even need the bucket, although I'd recommend it for support, for this application. Instead of a dimmer, you can also just use a valve to mechanically limit the air flow, as long as you don't completely starve the motor of cooling air. (not applicable for bypass blowers with separate cooling fan intake). You can also power a shop vac or any other universal motor off DC power, like from a few car batteries such as in an emergency /power outage situation. Or.... hook the chimney of this burner up to a boiler and a steam engine, to drive a blower, & make it completely self powered 😅😅 Either way I love it, very clever yet simple oil burner.

Gerry, here’s one you should attempt that you could get paid for your energy source. We leased out several acres to a tire recycling business that had extreme potential but was owned by an idiot. He ended up grinding close to a million tires with no ability to remove the metal. As you can guess, a fire broke out and soon we were making worldwide news. We used the equipment from our surface coal mining facility to build a dam all around the burning chips that were stacked 30ft high. Used several 6” and 8” pumps to fill the entire area with water. We completely extinguished the fire in 2 days, but the interesting thing is the superheated chips buried in the middle of the continuous lack of oxygen caused crude to separate from the rubber. A stream of overflow was mostly crude oil that we had tankers skimming the top of the sediment pond. That has always had me wondering if you had a way to heat a tire in a sealed, oxygen free atmosphere would the trapped crude be enough to feed itself sufficiently once everything is up to temp. Not only would the oil make heat, but the remaining material is very high quality carbon steel. The environmental unfriendly ash from the cooked product now becomes a high quality fertilizer that we used on the reclamation mix that had incredible results. Don’t know if we could make it happen in a garage, but seen nature create several tanker loads to be taken separate the remaining water. With the thieves controlling our energy prices again, may be with a try. I imagine crude will be tough to acquire once WW3 is played out to realize Chinas 100 year plan to own the world. Drafted in 1949, China will accomplish this plan years ahead of schedule.

Nice build. A yellow flame means smoke, soot and a dirty overall burn. You need to restrict the air flow alot more to put it under some pressure. Put an endcap on the air and start by drilling some horizontal holes in it like how a stove works. Once the flame is blue, then you will achieve a clean burn with no smoke. You can also get rid of the drip system in favor of a gravity fed setup. Any liquid will self level, if you create small pool inside and out, your feed tank just needs to be air tight in order to be self feeding.
@bandit9112 жыл бұрын
The problem is not the airflow, it will burn orange no matter how much or little air you give it, the problem is burning the oil in a pool, in order to get a clean blue flame like you are talking about you would need to atomize the oil and the balance the airflow against that, but in doing that you are bringing expense to the situation which would defeat the purpose of this burner which is made to be cheap source of heat
@enermaxstephens1051 Жыл бұрын
@@bandit911 How much expense? If it was just a one time expense, it would probably be worth it for a shop that does a lot of oil changes on cars and has a lot of waste oil. Or maybe you could just make all the dirt and grime and smoke only went outside?
@bandit911 Жыл бұрын
@@enermaxstephens1051 look up Riello oil burners, they designed for burning diesel or kerosene, but can be modified to burn waste oil, but it will need to be filtered and heated to thin the oil out before entering the burner, the problem is the consistency of the oil you burning all being the same oil, would need to save up as much oil as possible in a tank and mix it all to the same consistency to set the burner to burn that oil (air to fuel ratio), but it can be done and definitely worth doing if you have a constant supply of oil 👍🏼

I just finished my build of a similar version of what you have shown. A few differences, but the same concept. I am in the process of doing test burns and making subtle changes. Outside of tank seems to run about 820 degrees F. No glass in the door. I tried a larger blower unit from an oil furnace, but didn't like that fact that it draws about 300 Watts; opted for a smaller fan unit that uses 36 Watts. Experimenting with different clearances between tube and burn pot as well as different size burn pots. Thanks for posting!
@GerrysDiy10 жыл бұрын
Hi. Well done on your build. I haven't lit my burner since last winter but I will light it within the next couple of days. It really is amazing the amount of heat that these things can produce on waste oil. I have tried veggie oil and motor oil and there is not much difference in aparent output. Plenty of heat and a red hot stove which ever type of oil you use. Once you get the air fuel mix sorted there is no smoke and lots of heat. Cheers Gerry
@Kntryhart10 жыл бұрын
Gerry's Waste Oil Burner Howdy! I hate to say it, but I have given up on this design. After a solid week of trying, I could never get it to burn without black residue coming out of the chimney. I tried everything I could think of: rebuilt the tube-in-tube twice; tried three different burn pots; used more air/less air; added secondary air holes at base of tank; tried several different oil dispersion devices inside the burn pots; and added turbulator vanes to mix gasses. Most frustrating! So, I put back my trusty Ozzirt-style burner back in service...works like a charm; no black smoke and it needs no electricity. I really tried, but I could not get this design to work consistently for me. Regards.

Reply to Brad not Landa I was in the infantry in Alaska in the end of the'Nam era. We'd be out in tents at 60° below Fahrenheit and more. They were heated with "Mogas" which I think was a blend of diesel and kerosene. We'd suspend a 5 gallon Jerry can on a tripod and feed a thin copper line through a thick rubber section of roof. The fuel line went into the Yukon Stove, about 12 inches square and a couple feet long with a 3 inch or so Diameter chimney. There would be a fire lit right at the front door with kindling and branches under a cast iron plate that the mogas would drip onto. NOT a steady stream, a drip by drop onto the plate. The wood fire would burn and the mogas would drip onto the wood and charcoal and keep it burning. That fire was directly under the cast iron plate - which eventually got hot enough to vaporize the drip on contact by the drip. At that point, the fire roared in time with the drip speed. The sides near the front would get bright cherry red. Forging temperature.

Love it, very clever yet simple and effective! Subscribed! I need to build something like this, to burn my waste motor oil + cooking grease. I know I can probably (legally) dispose of it for free, but there's something about throwing away perfectly good fuel that hurts. I am curious why popular commercial waste oil burners use compressed air to atomize the fuel -- I have seen several gravity drip designs like yours, and I would assume that once the fire box gets up to temperature, the intense heat is all that's needed for complete combustion. Maybe the pressurized air is just to ensure complete combustion from the minute you fire the unit up, to ensure a quality burn even when cold starting, since the commercial units can be run off a thermostat. Either way, for a typical home shop, it would probably take years to pay back the difference between something like what you built, vs paying ~$2k+ for a commercial unit.

I like your waste burner design. I like the two pyrex glass windows. Have you thought about putting a pipe heat exchanger. I've built them for my pot belly stove and put it on the duct coming out of the stove and I capture more heat coming out of the top of the stove. The stove pipe at the top of the building is only about 100 - 125 degrees. At the stove it is about 800 to 900 degrees. It works very well. You could do this with yours just by putting the pipe in, wrap it around and come back out. I used inch and a half pipe and found a little squirrel cage with a small motor and I heat a 800 sq foot apartment with it. Warm and toasty. Ray

Slight mod/improvement for you- Build the fuel tank on top of unit, have chimney go up through the tank, warming the oil. No outside piping to ever chill the oil. Exhaust can be fabricated to be a "velocity stack" to harness it's pressure. Fabricate a "turbo" unit, inline with exhaust stream, to a pulley/belt, to run a 12v DC generator, that powers a pump for the warmed oil to spray through a nozzle in the Firing chamber. The turbo/generator unit could also power the burner blower feed. All generation is balanced with an AGM 12v battery. The only "outside" electricity needed is the actual heater duct blower- in times of outage, could also be generator operated.

Very clear video, very helpful. Perhaps it might be an idea to filter the waste oil through a piece of old bed sheet or nylon tights. I think people making these heaters based on Spike's (KZbin id ozzirt) design have experimented with different hole configurations in the burner tube but yours seems to be working well. Do you get clean emissions from the flue once the burner is hot?

Very impressive job. I have a question, how much air volume is needed to keep the flame going?
@halloeffect6 жыл бұрын
You should put elbow at the bottom of your pipe so to blow air/flame into vortex. Once you have cortex flame you achieve super clean burning even with dirty oils.

Hi Halo Effect. I have a boiler stove on the go at the moment and it has a bend on the air into the chamber but a whole different burner system. Thanks for the advice Cheers Gerry
