The arrangement was actually Conrad Salinger and Don Rose, but that Mr. Wilson worked with their score is a testament to his recognition of the pinnacle of arrangers. Salinger was far and above, imho, the finest arranger in Hollywood during that period.

I'm usually saddened and annoyed by contemporary attempts to "update" the classics of American musical theater, because they're usually self-consciously styled-up and disrespectful to the emotional power of the originals. But Wilson truly loves this music, and he updates the stuff beautifully without sacrificing any of the lush romanticism that made it great in the first place.
@jsky217 жыл бұрын
I agree 150% he is one of a kind that I wish I could see maybe move to London or clone him (that means a copy), but he is top of any current orchestra. I could listen to his orchestra 12 hours a day, driving my neighbors crazy who have no idea what this music is...
@jvdesuit13 жыл бұрын
John Wilson explained once in an interview at the Proms that when he prepares a program of film music whatever their genre he studies not only the score (when it is not lost like that happens often for the old ones) but the orchestra composition to recreate as much as he can the volume and tone of the musicians and of the studio used when the music was recorded for the film. That's why he succeeds to make such fantastic performances. And also he chooses among the best British musicians to get together in his orchestra. The equivalent to his way of working for this kind of music, can be seen with the Lucern Festival Orchestra which gathers soloists from the major philharmonic orchestras in the world and is considered to be one of the best today for classical music..

Robert, I've read that John tries to stick very closely to the original charts from the 30's and 40's. I wouldn't, however, be surprised if you're not right about so many strings. To say nothing of 2, count them, 2 grand pianos!

When playing in a venue like London's Royal Albert Hall, with its vast spaces capable of seating an audience of over 5,000 persons, it stands to reason that the orchestra should be enlarged, otherwise the music will sound decidedly puny to the listeners way up in the gallery!

wonderful score, but, sadly, by this time, Fred was too old to play romantic leading men, and the lack of chemistry with Audrey shows that conclusively, and even Fred had to realize...old enough to be her grandfather, and it shows. still, Fred jauntily walking in that iconic scene near the Arch of Triumph is the highlight of the movie, and a kind of reminder to Fred that, yes, nice try here, but... Kay Thompson, on paper, was a good idea, but too horsey and campy and annoying to be in this movie. maybe somebody who was more camera suitable and less jarring would have been better? let's see...who could that be? any suggestions, anybody? Danny Kaye? Agnes Moorhead? i'll go with Kaye.
