I once did a mother of the bride fitting for a Halloween themed wedding. The mother's dress was a black all over lace that had a lot of Morticia vibes. She was adorable and a little self conscious until I mentioned the visual connection. Morticia has always been my favorite.

Kirtle isn’t the right word here. Your image showed what is often called a cotehardie or a gothic fitted dress. May I recommend you peek at the work of Robin Neatherton to get a much better idea of the gown, it’s construction and history? Lots of fun there! Kirtle is the term commonly used to indicate a supportive garment worn in the late Medieval and Tudor period. But yes, both were worn over chemises or shifts. Oh! And because I’m a nerd and this is very much my wheelhouse, I personally have always thought that Lily’s gown was inspired by a bliaut. That’s a really fun rabbit hole! Enjoy. 🥰 And Team Lily, obvs.

You do her well, Gertie. Let explain why they were canceled. They, along with Dark Shadows were cancelled for the same reasons. They were initially extremely popular, all of my favorite early childhood shows that influenced me for the rest of my life. Typical of the 60’s, parents let their children watch television without supervision. At about this time the practicing of the occult was on the rise. Concerned people of good faith got together and decided that these family shows were a bad influence on their children and wouldn’t allow us to watch them anymore. The ratings dropped monumentally as the parents also wrote in to complain about the influence of Satanism on their children. I still remember running home from school to watch Dark Shadows in 1967. Mind you I have asthma and it was a 3 1/2 miles. It was a labor of love. My mother wouldn’t let me turn on the TV and announced that parents across America would not allow their children to become Witches and Satanists. It worked, of course. To answer your question, I love both Lily and Mortician, but I am not a raven hair beauty. I always longed to be Angelique, of Dark Shadows.

It blows my mind watching all these women wearing Morticia hair...long wavy down the center. Wore my only straight dark down the center part in early 70s. Cut to bobish in 73. This hair long is not good for 90% women's hair type and face type...lot of work for not your best look. This chic will look like this 50 years from now because she still will think it is sexy. Like Cher and Dolly.
