I love this organist's treatment of "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring." The tempo is just right, not too fast as many do it. His relaxed technique bespeaks thousands of hours of work to achieve mastery of the instrument. Or should I say king of instruments. The improvisation is brilliant, but never loses sight of the original theme's harmonic simplicity. I think J.S. would be mightily pleased to behold his composition still relevant in the modern age when performed by a young master.

@Pablo Lopez-Ortega - you are so right. Most people (like me previously) listened to the first few minutes and thought "nice improvisation". But after seeing your comment, I thought I'd listen all the way through and it becomes staggering. It's as if he's turned a baroque standard into a romantic classic (a bit Widor-esque in parts). @@NinoNiemanThe1st I've been wondering for a long time now why his career never seems to really take off. Who is his agent, anyone knows? Whoever it is, he/she seems totally incompetent. @@JanPBtest I'm not sure about his career but he's perhaps not as well-known as he should be given pipe organ music is a fairly obscure corner of the arts these days. Nevertheless, people must listen to the whole of this clip (especially at 4:19 where he moves to an unexpected minor key), because his improvisation is masterful. Having said this, I'm sure if he went on tour widely, he'd have great audiences from those people who care about this stuff. It wouldn't matter if he was playing to only 50 people who cared, he'd engender immense respect!

Gert... when I first read the description of your performance of this masterpiece of Mister Bach's, one of many masterpieces that he composed in his lifetime, I thought to myself "Sacreligious, trying to improve on his 'Jesu'...". But then, of course, I listened. And then I listened again, and again. And the finest complement that I can bestow on you is that I really believe that if Mister Bach were to sit in that Beautiful cathedral with you and listen to your interpretation of his "Jesu...", that he would be smiling widely, and probably have tears of joy running down his face, listening to your beautiful interpretation. And I believe that my mother, a church organist and choir director for forty six years, who could probably have played "Jesu..." in her sleep, would have Loved your interpretation here. Congratulations, young man. By the way... you have admirers all over the planet, I am sure you know.
