It’s particular that in Bach the rithmical “16th-16th-8th” formula (the one with which the violins start, in the second bar) always denotes happiness.

I don't know if this was the purpose of these things, but I find a great way to get in my sightreading practice is to follow the continuo line (I play the bassoon). Rather than lamenting having to play a rather bland 8 bar ditty, I can bask in the glory of Bach's excellent writing. Many thanks for all of these concertos gerubach!

I like the decision to leave only strings on the end of the second movement (13:58), even though the harpsichord is scored to play together. It gets way more emotional and dramatic that way.

My middle school orchestra performed this piece without the harpsichord (Wish they could) and it was called clavier concerto no. 3. Spending a few days to find the concerto I found this video. I am usually on your channel so I knew you wouldn't disappoint me. And yet again somehow, you fail to disappoint me.

I knew Bach liked to take melodies from violin concertos (like in this case) and preludes and turn them into harpsichord concertos… but I didn’t know Bach transcribed the E major Violin Concerto for harpsichord. And the second movement is very interesting!

Another week and another release from gerubach! Do you always work in such schedule? And, when you will be done with harpsichord concertos, what do you intend to do next? By the way, I couldn't help noticing that it is very common to see harpsichord bass line doubling the cello in these concertos. Is it common in Baroque or is it something which Bach alone does more than others?
@gerubach10 жыл бұрын
Another week and another great reply! Thank you for your interest in my on going project. Now to answer your questions: At the moment, I'm giving every new post a little more than a week for viewers to enjoy until the next concerto is animated. The concerti, so far, have been fairly light on the scoring thus the reason for the steady posts but I can assure you that the concerto for 2 recorders, harpsichord and strings (BWV 1057) will take longer. In a nutshell, the more staves, the longer the work. After I finish with the concerti for solo harpsichord, I will continue to animate the concerti for 2 & 3 harpsichords as well (the one for 4 harpsichords, BWV 1065, has already been posted). After that, I'll be posting an organ work (still undecided on which one), then a Weimar cantata (BWV 12). After that... The four orchestral suites.

In regards to you question on doubling, first my disclaimer: "I am not a Bach expert": Many scholars believe that the harpsichord concertos are re-arranged works of previous concerti for violin or winds (oboe or flute). Since these instruments do not require a left hand to play a bassline, it has been my observation that Bach, many times, has excluded the continuo in order to highlight the left hand on the harpsichord. I wish my answer could be 100% correct but like I stated... I am not a Bach expert.

gerubach Thanks for answering my questions! I will wait for the next release patiently!

I was considering giving a detailed answer, but to explicitly answer your question, it was indeed common for the harpsichord and cello to share a bass line in baroque music. This technique, called Basso Continuo, is idiomatic and characteristic (some might even era-defining) for the Baroque period.
@liamh10158 жыл бұрын
yes, the cello and harpshicord were often doubled up in the baroque period becouse the cello and harpshicord were often background instruments.

Was that trill which was played but not written at around 2:05 supposed to be there?
@martijnpieterman9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Hartnett Yes, but in the baroque (also in the time of Johann Sebastian Bach) it is allowed to join a trill in certain places, also the freedom of slack expression, it just allowed in places where a trill sounds good but there is no vibrator state, in order to carry out the then just with a vibrator. (Translated by Google Translate, I am part of the Netherlands).
