This is incredible, thank you so much! I've just started reading Figure Drawing but was having some trouble figuring out how to apply the gesture section to my own work. Having watched this video I've made absurd improvement over literally just a few hours of practice - feels like gesture has finally really clicked. My poses are both much more dynamic and three dimensional, which is making further construction significantly easier as well. Thank you!!

Thank you for the video. I find this kind of gesture drawing very interesting, as it is methodical and not just "feel the pose or the movement". In the figure in minute 10:34 I have a question: how did I recognize that the person has his back turned to me. When I see the spine right and the bend left, I think the person is standing sideways?
@Grekosaurio3 жыл бұрын
use scapula as a landmark, u can use both, so u will know that if u used that as landmark is because is his back.

Hey Mr Hampton please do some gestures with people crouching and bending, having some trouble with those. Been using your book for a while now.
@michaelwilliam34994 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem, actually. I can draw standing poses fine. But when it comes to crouching poses, I'm having a bit of a difficult time. The thoracic curve and waste makes it a bit hard for me to draw that C-curve that forms on the back when crouching. I also don't know how to position the pelvis.

7:35 I don't understand this, your gesture here looks like it's having an extreme pinch on the right side on it, but the model right there has none? I understand that it's supposed to be the spine, but for me it just doesn't look right. I think I'm not understanding something here.
@stevenmichaelhampton Жыл бұрын
No worries. It's not going to work for everyone
@TaylorStine3 жыл бұрын
Something I really struggle with is trying to figure out if I'm drawing the actual spine (which would be in the center of the figure) or the contour. It looks like you're sort of doing both... it's the spine, but it counts for the contour, is that the right way to think about it?
@Scrappytwentyfourseven3 жыл бұрын
Buy his book if you can from amazon its around 60 dollars, its been 18 days till today and I've learnt a lot to say, I wish I could know this around 2 years ago... What I couldn't learn in all those years I did this is 10 days, I promise you... Read the book upto gestures around 20 pages then watch this video again... You are welcome in advance
@stevenmichaelhampton3 жыл бұрын
More or less. I'm drawing the idea of the spine (so neither the spine nor the contour). The lines are basically an armature that I'll build up. That they reference specific points on the figure at this point doesn't really matter.

I looked you up to see how you do your gesture drawings and I kinda understand but I’m a novice when it comes to art I don’t know a lot, but is it bad to jump to gesture? And learn anatomy if you don’t have some basic fundamentals down

When drawing the two ovals for the ribcage and pelvis should those shapes ever cross over the gesture lines of the torso, or are they confined in that space.
@unorthodoxbox4 жыл бұрын
Could I suggest looking up Proko’s lesson called the bean. The two oval shapes are representations for the rib cage and pelvis in the early stages of the drawing. They can overlap but that’s mostly due to perspective or how the figure is positioned in space, they all work together because of the spine. I hope that helps.
@bobbybob96946 ай бұрын
what are you supposed to do with the weight bearing leg? arent you just supposed to draw it like the other one regardless?

Sometimes I draw it with straighter lines, that's about it.

Hello how are you Thank you for these helpful videos openly I would like to ask you a question As you know gesture is done with three lines, which are C and S and a straight line The rule says that you should not use a single line to draw each body like C But can I use, for example, a line C across the line to draw the chest cage, for example, or should I make one above the other? Is it also permissible to draw the c line backwards?
@imlearninghowtodraw32504 жыл бұрын
Of course it's permissible to use the C - curve backwards. He does it on page 7 (2013 edition of the book) when he explains repetition and timing. Also in the page before that when he describes symmetry and asymmetry. As a matter if fact, the wrapping lines on the cynlinder are c curves. C curves can be facing backwards, forward, up, or down just like S curves.

I think your way of gestural sketching is great, except for one point, that you always seem to draw the spine from the side view even if the model (for example) has a direct view. That still confuses me a bit
@stevenmichaelhampton Жыл бұрын
All good. There are plenty of other ways to make a gesture. You should mix and match from all to get an approach that suits you.
