Oh, look a new video. Nice! At least something good in this bad day. Anyway. i'm glad someone finally pugts forward a proper design. Not something like „roaches“, who's only job is to scare the subs away. No, you go for the kill, because you know that if you scare them away, they'll come back. If you kill them, then you do some serious damage. I go always best of the best. Best guns, best torpedoes, best everything. At least for D, I'll pair them with some LC, with depth charges, and most importantly, with float planes. Some light guns as well, you never know who you bump into. It is expensive. Sure. But I don't lose them, however they lose their subs. So it pays off.

If you are going to discuss sub warfare you absolutely need to appreciate the three way subs get spotted. 1. Passive spotting - there is a very low chance of spotting subs if any ship in your fleet has sub detection (all destroyers have 1 iirc) 2. Active spotting - a higher chance based on the average spotting in your fleet, destroyers and light cruisers can have high spotting but battleships and heavy cruisers have low 3. Patrol spotting - if you find a sub fleet by patrolling the sub fleet starts spotted and must fight 4 rounds of combat You really need 3 kinds of destroyers and perhaps 2 kinds of light crusiers to optimise this kind of scheme. The other important news is that an up to date depth charge does about 25% damage to an up to date sub, meaning a destroyer with 1 depth charge will kill a sub in the 4 rounds of patrol spotting combat. In effect you need destroyers for 3 tasks related to subs. Type 1 - the roach destroyer, a DD1 with a Dual purpose gun 1 and an engine 1 as escort, it's there to screen the convoys and force the subs to retreat. If you want you an put some depth charges on it too. Type 2 - the fleet destroyer, your best DD with max torpedos, one depth charge plus radar and sonar, this destroyer increases your chance of active spotting a sub in combat and can attack that sub as well as screen warships and deliver torpedos in surface combat Type 3 - the patrol or asw destroyer, your best DD with max depth charges, torpedo slot optional with radar and sonar, these are deployed either as escorts if you are rich, or on patrol or strike force to kill patrol/strike force combo to kill subs. Personally I like equipping light cruisers with max float planes, sonar and radar and one depth charge (or have asw destroyers in their fleet) and set those fleets to operate anti sub patrols on the main trade rounts, these will kill off all the older subs quickly and the more advanced ones too, since the patrol spotting will work, it just takes time since every day spotting progress increases, so unless the other players is microsing his subs by continually retasking them then you will find the subs and if you have enough depth charges you will destroy them in that patrol spotting battle where the subs must fight 4 rounds fully spotted. Typical battle results of this kind are 5-10 subs dead per battle.

Usually you have roaches in your fleets as well, because they arent supposed to deal damage other than with torpedos. Having a maxed out DD with sonar and depth charges just to get shot at by the enemy fleet is a massive waste of IC. Because of how bad naval combat is designed in this game, having good/expensive DDs just isnt worth it.

How important are depth charges? Is it valuable/important to upgrade depth charges?

It doesn't hurt if you've got nothing else to research, but in general a sub that has been revealed will be destroyed in short order if it can be attacked - though there is of course a huge difference between no depth charges and yes depth charges.

My personal experience (I have not crunched numbers) is that destroyers are very bad at fighting subs in comparison to air wings with floaters and torpedos. The chances of finding subs and destroying them with air is extremely higher.

Ha ha, naval bombers go brrrrrtt (seriously they are the most broken thing vs SS....albeit you get some shot down by convoy and surface ships)

Agreed. Much superior than destroyers

AWS? Shouldn't it be ASW, considering that "AWS" would be "Anti-Warfare Submarine" - i.e. a nuclear-armed deterrent sub?

No, today we're using Amazon Web Services to keep the convoys a float... oof, I'm just happy it's not in the rendered as text too.

... wait, blocking sea zones wasn't part of a patch? You have to own man the guns to do it? Seriously paradox?
@Pydgin Жыл бұрын
Unless this is being changed with 1.13 next week, you still need to block sea zones. I recorded this with 1.12
