In my limited testing, this utility shines the brightest when the interconnects between the parts are heavily loaded - IE when large amounts of shader comp or other data streaming is going on. Dead Space and Horizon would be good examples of this. These tiny tweaks to memory handling allow the CPU to spend more time feeding the GPU in those cases. That's where those unusually high boosts to average FPS come from. In lighter games the primary benefit will probably be a slight boost to your 1% lows - basically any situation where a higher latency memory task occurs.

Installed that and performance tools and it’s legit a ball changer. Without them Undisputed a boxing game recently released was running at 10-15 fps now it’s locked at a perfect 30. Amazing.

These kinds of tweaks are awesome. I play pretty much all modern games at 30 FPS on mine to preserve battery life (even at 30 FPS and a mix of low and original a game like God of War clocks in at about 2 hours, I wouldn't want to push it further) but for someone who is pushing for 60, especially if someone is docking their deck, this is an amazing utility.

I’ll say this just made my steam deck more snappy. Mine would take a few seconds to exit games and now it exits so much faster. The game proformance has been a bit better not not crazy gains. It’s definitely worth doing.

Just getting demanding games to 45fps is more than enough let alone 30 depending on the game. Some might hit 60 with adjustments. Long as it’s playable and a good experience, that’s what fundamentally matters.

My steamdeck has become a bit of a Fallout76 machine of late.... This improves the performance noticably so. Running much smoother at a mix of medium to high settings at 40fps. I wouldn't go as far as to say locked but it running a lot closer to 40 than 30 prety darn consistently and has definitely reduces the stutter that was occuring when new chubks of the map are being loaded in (or what I assume are new chunks being loaded in !). Current version is 2.1.4 by the way. There was a recent steam OS update as well, so performance is even better. Did a benchmark on shadow of the tomb raider maxed out on every setting with 37 fps average min 30. So if that’s what ultra max AA gets you, tweaking settings can get 60fps. It is game by game as well as what proton you’re using as well as your steam settings but the gains over stock or standard is quite obvious especially when it comes to stutter. I would imagine this would reflect in emulation perhaps as well.

Ok, so this is if you don't have it installed? I don't have this on my SD yet, but I've been noticing issues with games, but I'm late to the party. The videos I were looking at I guess I thought it was if you already had Cryoutilities installed. This has been a very simplistic explanation and I definitely appreciate it bc I am not the most tech savvy, but don't know anyone who is, so I don't want to mess my SD up. So it's been taking me some time to do this. I appreciate the clear and concise instructions.

My biggest kind of open question about CryoUtilities is "Why didn't Valve make these the system defaults themselves?" The only thing I can think of, at least as far as the swap file size change is concerned, is that they expected the 64GB model to be the top selling SKU and didn't want to take 16 GB of that space away. But some of the other things, like 4GB dedicated VRAM or the swappiness settings seem like they should still be doable on the 64GB one.

They didn’t include them in order for there to be no major performance discrepancies between the 64 GB model and the higher ones from a marketing perspective, due to the size of the drive being a factor regarding the swap size and swappiness, and the additional space taken up by going beyond the 1 GB default especially on the lowest model.

Hmmm seems perfect for RPCS3...gonna test this. Gonna get a new ssd anyway so might as well test now. EDIT I don't believe it, sly 4 on rpcs3 ran like a stuttering mess even with a 30fps cap, now...with the GPU AT 200MHZ, it's a flawless 30fps. Running at 800mhz just to give it proper overhead for heavier scenes that may come up. 2gb of vram usage, 5gb ram usage. I should set it back to 60, before it was hovering over 45 ish.

It increases fps at least 4-5 for me but everything feels snappy now..Well only problem is my SD complains of low diskspace. I'm using the lowest 64gb set and 256sd card, so does the cryo utilities actually uses up the internal memory storage on the recommended settings.??

I would reinstall the game or wipe the deck. Wiping the deck helped with a lot of games after I had reinstalled everything.

Installed this but really haven't seen much of a FPS boost at all. Spider-man still hangs in the high 30s to low 40s. It did seem to give a small boost to The Outer Worlds and I still need to try some other games.

as far as I know, it should work on most linux machines but there are always some edge cases

@@examen1996 yeah it's somewhat preconfigured and expecting steam to be installed but it's not looking for /home/deck now. Also swap options won't work for swap partitions as it expects swap files, hence why I said "most" because a lot of distros use swap partitions.

You can set a fixed swap file (min/max same size) from within within Windows itself but the memory tweaks and swappines settings aren't really available to tweak on Windows.

You may not have the drive space for a full 4gb. Might be best to try and delete some stuff or move it to another drive. I upgraded mine from 64gb to 500, and it was actually pretty easy.

there is an issue with that game where the 4GB vram doesn't work so you have to set the vram to 1GB to play that game

So I followed up to the run storage maintenance step. My steam Deck froze after about 10mins. Now every time I restart the deck it freezes in steam OS after about 30 seconds. Anyone have any ideas?

What storage maintenance, where? If the problem is a simple command or config reverting the action should solve the issue. If made quick i guess.
