I know you said this isn't a deck tech, so I don't want to be too gripey about this, but you never, never, never, NEVER want to play Martyr turn one. Anyone who knows her is going to slam down just about any removal they have to negate your lifegain, which is a major bummer. The ideal Martyr opening is: Turn one: Plains, Serra Ascendant Turn two: Land, Martyr, swing ascendant. If they don't have mana open to burn your ascendant, crack the Martyr to put Ascendant in the air. If they do have the mana open, keep holding onto Martyr, since you still have one mana open to hit her. And they may tap out going into turn three, when you can draw an extra card to net an extra three life. But if you have a Martyr on board, ALWAYS keep one mana open so you can crack her. This makes her an effective chump blocker to blank a Goyf or other big ground creature, which is a major difference maker against some of the tougher matchups in the format.

good thoughts, but i don't mind using my Martyr as removal bait, rather than facing a Path or Abrupt Decay aimed at my Ascendant or Pridemate. These are the two big win cons, and the Martyr might occasionally have to live up to her name to protect them preemptively.

Michael Reppenhagen That can prevent removal from your Martyr, but you really rather have your opponent deal an early game removal like flame slash or doom blade on your big hitter and then kill the martyr in combat or other removal?

Gattawon The main thing about playing Ascendant turn 1 is that you are able to swing with a 6/6 flying lifelink turn 2 (and that might mean just winning the game against some matchups). Game 2 or 3 though, I'd recommend Martyr first... But game 1, taking a shot in the dark never hurts if it means winning.

But then game 2 and 3 the opponent will prepare more removal for your ascendant... and if you will try the Martyr it will survive or protect the ascendant - and then you can't use the martyr

I am someone who has only been playing for 2 months [ie all my cards are from Return to Ravnica or later], I see lots of people playing modern and want to join in on the fun, but I have almost no idea of any of the builds to try and run [and lack the collection to just try and build one], these videos are super helpful and just really well made. Not sure if anyone else noticed, but t3 ascendant swinging for 6 is not even the best draw. Play ascendant on t1, play martyr t2, sac, gain 12 life, and swing for 6 in the air on turn 2.

I've built the red/white variant of this deck. It pretty much abuses Norin the Wary and Purphoros' effects. It's a ton of fun to play!

I created a R/W deck based partially on this deck, and on a Norin the Wary deck, along with some things I thought could work extremely well. One of the first times I tried the deck out, I tried it at the Modern game at the game store I went to. My first game was against a guy who was a "pro-tour qualifier" (he was proud of this) playing a blue and black deck. Seeing I was new he decided to adjust his deck so that it would be "more fair." In retrospect it was a bit condescending, but I didn't mind since I was eager to try my deck. I went into it expecting it to probably not work (my previous decks had not). I won the first out of three games. I was in such a ridiculously strong position he scooped. The second game he decided to not play as nice. He threw in a shit ton of counterspells to try and stop my deck. He won the second game, but barely. At one point I had Norin the Wary, two Soul Wardens, and a couple of Glitterfangs going (Glitterfang is a 1/1 for R with haste and it returns to my hand at the end of the turn). As a result, my life total was 66. The only reason he survived was because he countered everything else I tried to put down, desperately trying to find what he needed to kill me. Eventually he did. I ended up losing in the end, but I was so god damn proud of that deck. IT WORKED! I have been tinkering with it ever since to make even better and more reliable.

I recently built Soul Sisters in paper and I'm having a blast! I play at a local for fun club and the deck is a great fit in the modern group we have. It is a fun and versatile deck that I would recommend for people who enjoy white and are looking to start modern.

Now that Jund/Junk decks are back in the meta after cruise ban, the deck gets a bit better. The BGx midrange match is pretty good. The big weakness of the deck is spot removal and now that delver can't just keep finding answers its a pretty good deck. Not top tier, but fun AND competitive

3 years later I play a standard mono white Odric deck with the 3 effects I focus on are lifegain first strike and vigilance but with Oketra I might go for double strike and indestructible as well it is a fun deck that takes a lot of standard decks by surprise including vehicles decks and G/B constrictor

+Naetheras If you want a more competetive version of RDW, you need to splash in a color or two (RW/RWG) for more versatile burn spells. I have built RW burn and it is not as easy to pilot as you may imagine, even though it's still not tier 1 (more like tier 1,5). Also, with only 8 fetch lands (Bloodstained Mire and Wooded Foothills, both playsets) it costed me over 400$, so don't say it is a "cheap way to win" please. Thank you.

I run this deck in a variant with red for Lightning Bolt, Norin the Wary and Purphoros. It has a "budget" mana base with 4 Sacred Foundry and 4 Clifftop retreat for fixing. Norin + Purphoros gives the deck some ridiculous inevitability.

At one point I ran B/W all enchantment standard. There was a rare combo I got where I could get a 21/21 first strike lifelink turn three. Turn one, hopeful eidolon. Turn two, two ethereal armor. Turn three, two more ethereal armor. After that, winning is easy.

As someone who just finished building the deck for the low price, I can agree that it's a great and fun deck! A few things to note are that it doesn't have anything against combo and the mirror match can be abysmal. Also, the dream plays aren't T1 Martyr and T2 Ascendant, its the reverse. With a good hand, it means going to 32 life and then swinging with a 6/6 flying lifelink on turn 2. I really do recommend this deck for anyone who wants to get into the format though!

Either of those plays and I'm happy. Yeah, combo gives it trouble, but there's options. Rule of Law shuts down a lot of combo, Mindbreak Trap stops storm (and you don't need blue mana if you time it right), Rest in Peace for anything coming out the graveyard, etc.

I built a w/g variation on soul sisters that I like to call troll sisters, as it allows for literally infinite life through stuff like eldrazi displacer and brood mother (the 6 mana eldrazi that gives you 3 scions when it enters the battlefield). I threw doubling season in there too to help build an army to clear out your opponent.

Soul sisters is white weenie with lifegain. It is very common to run 1 or 2 sideboard cards in the maindeck. I would run 1 graveyard hate enchantment maindeck and a way to deal with enchantment/artifact maindeck.

if you have serra ascendant in hyour opener and a martyr of sands, it is a lot better to play the serra ascendant first and on turn 2, go for the martyr and activate inmmediately so, you can swing with a 6/6 liflink guy on turn 2.

In combination with the Serra ascedant .Imagine a board with a 6/6 flyer lifelink a couple other creatures + an echantment that prevents all damage to them.Your oppent will ahve to remove the echantment ,before even thinking of touching your creatures or your 30+ life

as much as I love this deck, it is unfortunate to me how expensive 3 of the cards are which I consider essential aurock champion (this is mainboard tech in all my test builds, one extra mana for a sister that stays after anger of the gods, can pretty much solo against any red deck agro strategy, and makes control players scratch their heads at their downfalls and doom blades, laughs at redcap on two different levels, and as an added bonus, immune to dismember, which is in a lot of decks as sideboard tech just because 1 + 4 life = awesome removal, the champion seems worth maining to me) ranger of eos (all around epic on so many levels, I personally think it should be priced higher, did you know that R&D originally had it at a 2/2 but had to up the power so revelliark could not bring it back) Serra ascendant (as much as i already have em, they are all in edh decks, it hurts me to pull them out) All three of these cards could potentially see a reprint in a core set, block set (possibly ranger of eos and ascendant, champion is from morrodin, we were just there) or peripheral set, which would drop the price of this deck to much more reasonable levels. this is my favorite modern deck, and I have a couple online and proxy brews, I want to see the price of the key cards drop to where I can afford to own them, wizards, please, make it be.

My personal build of this deck is pretty simple, i run four of each sister, ascendant, prodemate, ranger, i also have a set pf squadron hawks for a fast army of chumps and pride mate triggers from sister triggers in the mid to late game. Im also running two paths to exile instead of four and filling the slots with erase since my meta has a few leyline of punishments floating around. Im also thinking of adding in a student of ojutai (its a dtk card with cast noncreature gain 2). The rest is pretty much the same as the video.

yeah yeah, old video. i know you won't answer this but how do you feel about a black splash for cards out of the board, orzhov charm, and bitterblossom? orzhov charm can either kill a guy with almost no drawback or bring back the martyr or ascendant, and bitterblossom is pretty much "at the beginning of you upkeep, put a 1/1 black flying fairy rogue token on the battlefield". it also allows you put thoughseizes and have access to dismember with less drawback in the board. just a thought, idk how good it would be.

My Husband has a deck that he spent 3 months developing and at the end it was all worth it! By about turn 4 if not sooner he is up at over 120life! And if he gets his serra avatar out with feed the pact its game over he will sacrafice that card at his end step and gain that many 2/2 gren wolf tokens and 2 life foreach creature brought onto play! Then since Serra avatar went to the gravyard from any were this case its from the field she goes back into his deck to be shuffled. Now i dont remeber what the next card he would play name was but the instant card's effect is that target player obviously him would gain 2 life equal to the number of creatures on the field! XD Iv tried so hard to beat him. So has his friends! And nothing!

turn 1 steam vents, turn 2 any land, turn 3 any land end step flash in pestermite, turn 4 twin win game gg. Twin nullifies all life gain outside of sisters simply because it can deal any amount of damage it sees fit to deal. Sisters stops it from doing so seeing as the damage is made through putting creatures into play. Twin also runs a large amount of counters. if you want to beat him play that or birthing pod as it plays bile blights and the like. Drown in sorrow is also a solid way of killing people who rely on such a combo

Pro of all Professors, I play a pre-made deck but add and remove cards from it and it is a Black/white Life gain and add a remover for Artifacts and Enchantments and gain four life and creature with a ability that for how much life I gain a target player lose that much life and a planewalker sorin. is this good for my deck?

Tender: Is a creature, which can gain you a bit of life and also works as a blocker Shuts down red completely for a turn, But doesn't help against any other colour brave the elements Can protect against multiple colours, not just red. Can make your team almost unblockable for a turn. Doesn't protect your life total other than to keep your blockers alive I dunno, I like them both, but personaly I'm going for brave the elements, as it's a bit more unpredictable, and also works against targeted removal

Honestly I am not a huge fan of Spectral Procession. I prefer Secure The Wastes because it is a much better late game drop, since you can pretty much determine the amount of tokens you will put out, and if you have a lot of mana, you'll be gaining plenty of life. Sure Spectral Procession summons fliers, but that 6 mana cost is really high and drawing it early game is terrible. I swapped them out with Secure The Wastes and it works great in my opinion. Great video though, I love this deck so much.

I dont know if you knew this, but it would only cost 3 mana since it is a mono white deck. For spectral procession you can either pay 2 of any color of mana OR one plains mana for each symbol so in this deck would would always only pay 3 mana for it

I know that this is fairly old, but wouldn't you want to sac Martyr then play your land on turn two so that you have 6 cards in hand when her ability goes off for 18 life instead of 15 from only 5 cards in hand. Now I could totally see where playing the second land early on turn two would be useful if you were running Silence and were afraid of someone burning Martyr before you can sac her.

No, lands are colourless, so you don't get life for revealing it.

Professor, I'm working on this build for Modern. I've done it in Pauper. A quick question since I don't play MTGO - are Martyr of Sands and Whitemain Lion Pauper legal? I've seen them in Modern deck lists and wonder if they would fit in the Pauper version of this.

+magonista66 Run 1 graveyard hate enchantment maindeck. Run 1 artifact and 1 enchantment hate maindeck or 2 disenchant. Trust me. Maindecking hate is the way to go.

Archangel is good, but I worry about the mana cost. This is a deck that wants (mostly) 1-2 drops. The Serra Ascendent at only W and potentially a 6/6 lifelink flyer is the real beat stick of this deck.

Great timing! I just started building Soul Sisters and this has been helpful. Does this deck transition well into any other Modern / Legacy staples? As in, are any of these cards used in other decks?

Yep. People are very fond of Martyr Proc, which uses most of this, as well as Black/White tokens which uses quite a bit of this as well.

LOL I have 4x ranger of eos from when he was worth next to nothing NICE and 4 path of exiles too, I didn't even know they were valued this much atm

Yeah, unfortunately the place I attend for any events doesn't do any modern stuff :P I'm sure I could suggest it though. I have one question about the deck though: How would I balance the number of ghost quarters and windbrisk heights in the deck?

Has to do a lot with your meta. The ghost quarters are for destroying specific lands that are key to your opponents. So, for example, if you are up against mono blue Tron, you'd want to destroy their academy ruins. They often only have 1-2 of those in the deck, so you'd probably main board have 2 Ghost Quarters and maybe have 1-2 in the sideboard. But maybe your meta doesn't have a lot of need for that type of land destruction, so you swap those 1-2 ghost quarters out of your main board and instead have 2 windbrisks.

I see. My mind is a little shackled to standard where mutavaults run rampant; speaking of standard, would you run a Nykthos, Shrine to Nix in this deck? Most stuff is really low CMC but it could mean a hand dumping for a large push

I would not, because your devotion isn't going to get high. Most things are only 1 W. I would add, then, that if you don't expect to ever build and play with the Ranger of Eos, that it is at an ALL TIME high right now. Highly, highly unlikely that it is ever gonna be worth more than it is now. Might be a good time to sell and buy cards you'll actually play with. ;)

This may seem like a strange card choice but wouldn't chalice of life fit the life gain aspect as a quick way to transform it into 5 damage a turn on the tap as a way to close out games early on?

I feel that slows down the rest of the life gain. The return from graveyard cards wouldn't target it for example.

I feel like it goes without saying that taking out 2 soul wardens and putting felidar sovereigns in their place wouldn't be hated. also, congregate would've been a great card to put in as well.

+Carson The unwanted man the Sovereign is way too high casting cost for the deck. you can't afford to wait that long to try and win, plus it will see a removal spell faster then you can say end turn. Nice idea, but the deck is trying to get out a turn one or two 6/6 flyer to beat face before they can stop or remove it, the lifegain is mostly just there to turn on your Ascendants, as well as to survive super agro decks that try to win the damage race. And the conregate is outshown by Martyr of Sands by a long shot. there is a reason everything in the deck except for your creature tutor is 2 or less, and that tutor works too well in the deck to not include.

If I had a soul's attendant on the battlefield with an Ajani's pridemate, and I cast spectral procession, would the pridemate get 1 counter or 3?

Three. Soul's Attendant will trigger for each token, then Ajani's Pridemate will trigger each time one of those triggers resolves.

I have a similar deck, though I threw in a few Rhox Faithmenders and Celestial Mantle (and Felidar Sovereign sometimes). I'm curious if you have an opinion on those two cards (Rhox and Celestial) because I've found them to be super, stupid powerful, but I don't see them get much love.

Maybe having a couple Rhox Faithmenders or Celestial Mantles would work, but Felidar Sovereign is too expensive and a removal magnet; you have to wait until your next upkeep for his ability to trigger, by which time either it's dead or your life total is below 40.

his whole point is removal target. played against a w/g enchantment deck the other day. gained 2,551 life off a single attack. felidar made it possible by drawing the exile away from my rhox/ascendant.
