Is inspiration overrated? Can you train imagination? After working with imagination for years there are 2 practical ways you can approach inspiration and imagination and this is how I trained myself to get ideas that I can get excited about.

Whenever I hear another artist talk about the creative process, I can't relate very much. I can completely relate to how you describe things, and it makes me feel good. I feel better about how I go about things, because it's not like the 'learn to art' packages that you can buy. Thank you for this.

I understand your point of view. I’m an artist myself but it’s something that I discovered at a young age. To me is something that I constantly see in my head, after 30 years I realized drawing is something that comes with in your self. You are born with it but you do have train your hand in order to let it be. You see an Artist mind is very complex and because of it, you gotta adapt your motor skills (your hand) to the levels of your mind.

I applied this to my digital art and funny enough my guitar playing as well and it works so good. I feel a lot more creative. Not all the ideas turn out to be something amazing but being more creative and not struggling as much to find inspiration to draw or play feels great. Thank you for this advice and the wisdom u provide.

So many nice nuggets of wisdom in this video! As a musician/composer, I totally agree with your point about inspiration being overrated. When you're in the business of creating art or music as a service, you can't afford to wait for inspiration, or else you'll miss the deadline. When you're doing it as a hobby, then it might not matter so much… but it's still a really good practice to make creation a habit, as opposed to an activity that only takes place when you're feeling 'inspired' or motivated. I'm hoping to delve into digital art soon (currently saving up for an iPad Pro!), so I've been binging your videos. It might be a while before I can get started, but I can't wait. Love your content man, keep it up :)

Mikko, I wanted to say thank you. Your videos are what has reignited my passion for art after years of pushing it away due to trauma in the artistic community/job market. Your videos, commentary, and beautiful pieces remind me of why I got into painting in the first place, and for that I must say thank you. I know I'm not the only one who has been touched by your art, and we're all so thankful for this community you've created. 💖

Great video as always! Something to add: Maybe sometimes you don't have time to instantly start on your idea, so write it down (for example on your phone) and start later. This helps me a lot and since starting to do this I did get more "moments of inspiration".

After I accepted the fact that some ideas are necessary stepping stones I’ve spent less time lamenting on their perceived quality. If I want my imagination to make wider leaps to some direction I’m going to have to go through the small skips first.

Great video Mikko! Your advice here is 100% true. The first time I was exposed to these ideas was from watching your videos. You turned me from a devote Bob Ross tutorial follower to a follower of my own imagination. It completely altered my relationship with creativity and provided a deeper understanding of what it means to make art. I’ll always be forever grateful for that insight and advice. ❤️

I like the way you put that: “evolving idea” It’s the side of creativity that we rarely pay attention to. The ideas that come to us aren’t always fully formed or set in stone. They often shape-shift throughout the process and that’s perfectly normal.

Tools are easy but art is very hard. Every painting gets you closer to getting those ideas on canvas in less tattered state so don’t give up because you are making progress. I understand that the beginning is the hardest part and it’s easier to get sidetracked especially with digital art. I got frustrated too, a lot and often but I always loved making things just a tiny bit more than I was afraid of failing at making them and more than anything I think that’s what got me through the hard part.

How many layers do you use for most pieces? (also amazing work :D)
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 2 жыл бұрын
Depends totally on the painting it could be 1 or 200. These paintings started out as livestreams and I tend to use way more layers in those sessions than in paintings where I’m not under that time pressure. Cleaning up the excess layers after the stream is usually a boring and time consuming task. I prefer to work with as few layers as possible because otherwise the painting can end up looking like it’s being glued together from newspaper clippings.

May I ask what kind of Art school did you go to? Just curious, i can draw too just not sure if I can get any benefits from Art school.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 2 жыл бұрын
It was a school that taught oil painting. I’ve been in so many art classes in my life through moving schools and hobby related activities that I think the actual school matters less than finding a teacher that connects with you and helps you learn. Teaching is a rare skill and with art it’s even more specific than that. Find a person that has the reaults you want to have and you’re more likely to be receptive to the information they’re giving you.

I've tried to download your brushes via gumroad -- via iMac, iPad, PC laptop, but after clicking on the "I want this" prompt nothing happens. Tried as a member & incognito, but the result is always the same. Is there another way of purchasing without going through Gumroad? Thanks.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 2 жыл бұрын
In some rare cases there have been 2 kinds of reasons why a purchases isn't working. Either there's a browser setting or an account reason why Gumroad doesn't work like intended. Gumroad customer service email address is: support@gumroad.com Remember that I don't run Gumroad. com but I have contacted their customer support several times when I've had a technical question or a question on behalf of a client. They've responded to me during the same day on all cases and I have nothing but good things to say about their customer support. I've contacted them also on behalf of customers but honestly it's always easier to contact them yourself because they'll be able to see where the process goes wrong. For security reasons I urge everyone not to contact me with any payment details as Gumroad is just a vendor of my products I'm not a part of that company in any way. After a purchase goes through it can take a few minutes before you receive an email with a download link. As the download becomes available it will also appear in your library section under the segment : gumroad.com/library So holding onto the email is not necessary to access your account downloads. If for whatever reason you want a refund on the product I can do that from the creator side as soon as I am awake and have an email like that. To make a refund all I need to know is the email used to log into the account when the purchase was made. I recommend all purchases to be made while logged into your account as the library section can be used to redownload any prior purchases at any time without any additional fee. I hope this information helps. I'm sorry for not being able to answer technical questions myself. Even if you decide not to purchase the item you were looking for I'd still like to thank you for trying despite those difficulties. Let me know if there's anything I can help with. M
