Hi Andrew, I picked up a DDJ400 last year and taught myself how to DJ and your videos were really helpful, they helped me get better. I got a couple of chances this year and it really blew up and in a couple of months I have already played with some of the best INTERNATIONAL acts in the world and the best djs in my country at the best venues. Wanted to thank you sincerely. Not only your tips about DJing were helpful but also your attitude in life. Cheers 🥂

Very good and true video message. I'm a celebrity photographer and told one of my PR friends I wanted to DJ in clubs again. With that request I was signing a Promoter agreement with a rooftop club in NYC to host/DJ a weekly Celebrity Happy Hour and just like that, I became a Promoter. It was an awesome experience and I can't wait to do it again. It wasn't easy but it was rewarding and what you've explained in this message is spot on!

Thanks so much man. Your information is invaluable to a beginning DJ like myself. I now feel as if i can stand out above the crowd of other DJ's at local venues. I feel like this is similar to the way i used to have to conduct myself during over the phone sales I did in New Zealand. Its never about you its about the customer and their emotions and interests. And connecting yourself with the customer on a personal level. Anybody can hop in a club and mix a simple transition. But not everyone can connect with individuals on a personal and professional level, and be personally interested and invested in other individuals unselfishly.

Loved your video. I wish I was more convinced by your message, though. Let me explain - I’ve known so many people who are really good DJs, and they do what you’re saying - they go out to gigs, bring friends along, spend money, dance, support the scene...and they never get asked to play a gig. Whereas I did the opposite - I basically NEVER went to gigs, but I didn’t wait for someone else’s approval either. I just made my own gigs. And when those went well, people started booking me. Anyway, cheers for the video. I’ll check out more of your stuff.

How do I go about building a good relationship with this dj? Should I meet in person and see if he’s willing to mentor me? Do I ask him for advice to start as a new dj? Do I shadow him during a set? Hi Andrew, stumbled on your video randomly.. enjoyed watching this because as a dj who played and ran events in sydney for more than 10 years I was interested to hear what you thought were good idea on approaches for aspiring djs. Have to agree 100% with these tips. Its so crucial to be able to build rapport with promoters. One thing I used to do ALOT was I would always club hop thur/fri/sat and get down to alot of different crews events. I think the concept of not pressuring for them to check your mixes etc or direct asking for gis... my best line was always "this party is great! really great.. let me know if you ever want any help with it. (this way im keeping the invitation open as to what i would do... promo etc .. setup/door etc) this always lead to enquirers to them for gigs. Another good tip is to rock up with lots of people and if a guy, it helps if you have a ratio thats good and balanced - not just all guys) Im actually surprised we havent met yet!! anyways great channel will check out your bio building.. because even after all this time I hate doing those things.. =) cheers

Since following your channel I have found great benefit in our profession. Can you change some ways of thinking, in short, you open my mind. In the past I was also manager of a club and actually I had never thought about how I behaved with other DJs. I have been a DJ for over ten years but the first five I was resident in a nightclub and the other five I spent playing in the middle of the ocean on cruise ships. Today I am on the ground and I am starting again from scratch, I also decided to use my real name and not a pseudonym but I have problems, having been out for a long time I have lost all the friends and acquaintances I had and I am also a person very reserved, and following a personal trauma I developed a small form of social phobia that turns into shyness in the eyes of others and I no longer go to nightclubs, so I am practically unable to promote an event. How could I go about intriguing an owner or promoter at this point. So is my second career over before I start if I can't contribute to an event format in this sense?

Really cool you're putting this out there! Fortunately enough, I have multiple friends with releases on various labels: Andhera Records, Rawsome Deep, Whoyostro. Two of them are on the lineup for a festival called Elements Lakewood. I'm lucky to have so much first hand insight into music production and the business side of things. I'm not sure why asking them for help brushing up on my DJ'ing is so anxiety inducing, but I'm okay with everything else 😂 I'm glad you're here, man. Will be purchasing soon.

Hey Andrew, what you think about mixes made in DAW can they be included in self promotion ? I understand it's not live mixing but to put mix together it can take weeks to mix it and it takes hours and hours spending on Beatport pre-listening hundreds of tracks just to find next perfect track.
@Benderiukas
@Benderiukas 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ninja_Gaijin I don't plan to publish mixes mixed in DAW as live it's complete cheating it's maybe good todo for David Guetta or paris Hilton :) About the timing it takes lot of time not to mix but it takes time to find tracks in Beatport or Traxsource it takes hours and need prelisten hundreds of tracks and since it's not my main job so i do it in free time. Unless I put tracks from Top100 which would take few hours to complete and which I would say it's same cheating as call premixed mix as live mix. And if Dj's like John Digweed is not treated seriously than I don't know who it is then as many producers and dj's use DAW to prerecord they mixes for compilations or radio shows www.ableton.com/en/pages/artists/john_digweed/ . For me mixes made in DAW is not about showing my live mixing it's more about show my music selection.

geez. you're doin a great thing for the students, i love it.. Sadly im from EU, and i actually am about to graduate to EU and International law Master's degree.. In free time I make music, but I also love djayin. Im not so good in it, I'd say juust about ok :D but if i had more time, I'd love to dj more, and have more time to actually live the nightlife.. I am not so active in it because well so much stress rn in life and yeah livin at my mums, she does not believe in going out without 'partying'... just moved back from abroad where i was more familiar with the nightlife scene. Here in my hometown Helsinki, i actually dont know much at all :p In the future whenever i have more time to dj, I will likely become a student because I am down to support your project further and also would just freaking love to play because djaying, only by myself already is something that is extremely cool and dope and lovely and just would freak to play in a nightclub. I admire Djays, and whenever I see one jamming, i'm like, that is pure exactasy.. if i left in sydney I would have maybe joined already cauz it would probably allow to meet up with other alikes more easier in real life ^^ and that would be nice not to feel so distance :O i dunno, maybe corona doin its thing but yeah, love the video, keep it up, always enjoying the positive energy

Hey! The ''on site approach'' only really work when you have no gigs. Once you enter the scene you're out there playing most weekends, in other venues in other cities. To be part of the local club like a hangaround doesn't work for pro DJ's. Being a pro DJ does NOT mean that you're famous, but rather known in the venues and maybe the cities you play in. When approaching a new club, exploring new territories, that will only happen mid week, and in my case by phone presenting myself asking for a minute or two. That short intro will give me a hint if this promoter recognize me, and worst case, I'll get a scheduled time to make the next phone call. When I get the 2 minutes, I don't push for gigs, just telling what I can do for them as a DJ and offer my services, and of course I'm updated on the events happening so I can pitch that and show my interest that way. When I get the 2 minutes, and get to listen for 10, that's the best start of new relationships. That's why it's so important to ask for the time and not push for it. You want the promoter to talk about the stuff they have going on, and they are like everyone else, they love confirmation. I never expect bookings to happen after the first contact, but rather down the line after a few more calls, and those calls are all about asking how things are and get them talking about the events you talked about last time, and if asked, tell about a gig or two where you've had a great time. Just to show that you're still there in the game. In rare occasions I've actually visited in person. If I've had an early night and are passing close enough, I take the time to try get a handshake and present myself in person. That shows that I'm prepared to assign time for this venue even when I'm at the end of a full day and on my way home. As a full time DJ, I'm mostly booked at least 3 months ahead or more, so if I get an unexpected free weekend day off, I don't stay home. Those are the times I actually go somewhere to either visit a DJ colleague, or offer a free warmup set to a promoter I've been in contact with. In those rare occasions I don't see that as a freebe, but an investment for the future. I never ask for anything else but a warmup set, because It's a rare day off, and I want to be able to stay and spend some money in the bar after my set, and of course, check the venue out as the night goes on. These rare nights are usually the only time I can listen to other DJ's performing live. Just my 2 cents.
