Thank you so much for this and other series Preacher! I've been playing wow for years on and off, usually during summer and xmas holidays. Always enjoyed tanking, but never dared to step up. My brother is in the same situation. Last night, we formed an Antorus PUG, I was the raidleader, and we cleared 11/11 with only 4 out of the 15 guys having done all of it. Your guides were crucial in making me understand how to improve, improve fast, and actually get shit done :D

A big side benefit of volunteering for me: Your DPS becomes irrelevent. We all have 'that guy' who's constantly trying to badmouth people for their dps (while ignoring stuff like multidotting, padding, etc) and if you're an anxious person like me, that's stressful. But if your not dps'ing for a portion of the fight, automatically everyone knows your dps is skewed and you have a built in excuse (on top of being more valuable to the raid in general).
@grick73797 жыл бұрын
Recently, all I was doing was DPS. I was the guy that stood out on Portal Keeper to help with Imps (N). I didn't even do bats as an Ele Sham on Eonar the first time. So when it came to Heroic, they asked me to do the last Cannon on High Council. As someone with an anxiety disorder it was really hard to accept it but once I did and did it fine it felt so oddly gratifying. Kinda thought back to you on your WoD video about volunteering and now I've been doing all kinds of stuff for the guild and it's improved my gameplay in only a month or so.
@Alchemagician7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I get your feelings on that. I have a severe anxiety disorder too and I've made the questionable decision of tanking for PUG raids. It's really difficult to manage my emotions around it but it's a fun time when it goes ok.

The man's right. If you lack confidence, actually doing one of these little jobs that need doing to secure a kill does boost your confidence cause you feel like you contributed that little bit extra to an encounter than most people.

I recently joined a new guild progressing Immonar. Previously i only killed dogs. As a Ret Paladin, when i first joined them for council, the leader asked who can replace someone who couldn't come for pod #2... I immidiatly stepped up, and at first it was a little weird and wonky (i didnt have a weak aura for the stacks) but i caught the jist of it, and now everytime we do Council, i get pod 2. My damage is dogshit, but i feel like i contribute more to the kill than if i just sat there thinking like a dick "please dont pick me!". It stemmed from watching your vids and hearing "you should be the volunteer". Solid advice and thank you for the great content Mike. Much love and respect!

Part of the reason I initially got invited to PuG raids in MoP on my hunter was I put in the note (back when you could put yourself out there solo) "Volunteer for Galakras Towers, Siegecrafter belts, and Engineer duty". I even messed up disengaging onto the belt the first few times and didn't get kicked.

Volunteering for frustrating add-tank jobs definitely made me a better main tank. I was way better at dealing with things going south from my experience handling weird mechanics. Kiting slimes while handling cleanses on Rotface was probably one of the best learning experiences I had in WoW.

This happened to me when progressing on 10-man ICC Lich King. I was by far top damage on my Arcane Mage but we needed more heals so I volunteered and got on my priest. Low and behold going into Heroic ICC I was much better than our 2nd healer so I was stuck healing all of Heroic ICC...

For those who actually want to be that guy, best advice is to play a hunter or a rogue, since we're always asked to do special actions on nearly every single fight since you have immunities/movement/sap/trap or whatever. As a hunter it really allowed me to improve as a player : i can think of of dozen fights when i had a completely different gameplay than my fellow guildmates, and it felt great =)

I really like it when you get past mechanics and go more into the mindset and motivation side of gaming. Even though it's "just" video games, when you want to excel in something it requires a change in attitude and some self motivation. You should make one of those motivation videos where they usually have slow mo sports things showing o the screen as they talk but instead have slow mo gameplay. lol

As a former GM and officer of many guilds that plays a healer, I can tell you that I don't even have damage meters visible. The people I remember and count as invaluable members of the team are the ones who step up to do what needs to be done, not the people who win on dps.

This here, is the sole reason I have a spot in Mythic Raids. I am weaker than most other players in my guild when it comes to raw DPS or even DPS as a percentage of what I sim for. And obviously that's not good and I aim to improve, but after a certain point it doesn't even matter. When you are progressing you want that guy who does solid dps but makes sure raid success is his first priority not a pretty parse.

Dunno if this is a good place to ask this but hey whatevs. I played as affli lock in the beginning of Legion and I loved it, except that my spec was dogshit. But I made do and kept it up and did decent dmg even though devs fucked me. I stopped however right before they buffed them and haven't really touched the game since. (Think it when Nighthold was released). I stopped mainly because everyone hated affli locks at the time and I also work nights which means time contraints. So my question is: Would it be even worth trying out a month or two again with my affli lock even with my time contraints? Is the gameplay even similiar compared to the beginning of the expac? Still work nights though but I'll manage.

And that's what makes it fun for me.. standing in one spot healing.. gets boring.. That's why playing as a dps never appealed to me at all..

Hey Preacher, long time viewer here. Love this video series. I just recently became the raidleader of my guild and im still pretty new at it. On wednesday we killed Heroic Argus as a guild for the first time. We do our Nomal farm raid on Thursdays. And this is where my question comes in: because i didnt wanna have a hassle as to who is doinig Pods on High Command or some other easy stuff, and because it is Normal farm content i myself would go and do those tasks. Now: should i ask my raiders if they want to volunteer for these tasks or should they ask me if they can do it? I really hope you read the comment. I love your content. Bye :)

@Julian-cn1ey7 жыл бұрын
I wish that more guilds maintained that mentality. During nighthold I was vital for multiple boss progressions with multiple grips, taunts, and the innate tankyness the unholy DK has. Always on bench outside of those fights from dps alone, sure unholy was the worst dps in the game at the time, but on most pulls, I would average low middle of the pack because the guild had multiple people who would just die during fights for various reasons. I was one of the best unholy dk's in the game at the time(handful of top 10 pulls (rank 2 at the time for chonomantic anomaly), usually never below rank 60), would always ask to do additional mechanics, was always the first to bres, was always sat in favor of an inferior player who could do more damage if more than 20 showed up. This continued into 7.2 after the raid was nerfed into the ground and when unholy could easily surpass dps checks. Ended up leaving the guild, I don't really regret it. I went into ToS as one of the top dps in a new similarly ranked guild after unholy got buffed. #onetrickpony

My Guild started noticing when certain mechanics of the fight did not get done when I was not there. Like on Inquisition-Bros in ToS Mythic. When I as a DK turned to the adds and was like "Fuck dps, imma chains of ice, grip and slow some bi***es with ma deseases". And suddenly people that where not that good at ccing stayed alive and did their dps. There are some fights where I tend to do unsung-hero stuff, as I am not really vocal about when I do certain things. But my raidleader noticed surely enough that whe I was there, some stuff got done, and that's why he does not even mind if my DPS is bad, because I had to do other things then merely dpsing.

@pldcanfly6 жыл бұрын
Depends. Every Specc could specc for tank. While Frost was the easier specc, it was mainly good at lower gearlevels. Higher up a dks filled the niche that druids did. Soaking hateful strikes, and basically be a health-sponge for the other tps-monster-tanks (Paladins...), and blood was better at that.

So I play shadow priest, and in fact I have the highest cleave damage of anyone other player in my guild. On heroic high command they keep making me do second pods and we endup with like 8 adds up while I'm in the pod. I keep telling my raid leader that maybe I should do the third pod instead so I can DPS the adds but he won't hear any of it. :-(
@NotOlzen7 жыл бұрын
i do the first part of the second pod on my boomkin and im the only boomkin in my raid (usually). even though im probably the best class for killing adds i still do it, and we do fine in my HC raids. i think you should talk to him about the people in your raid not killing the adds. everyone should help with it. because in HC the adds should die before the next set all the time. and we are talking like 5-10 sec before
@shadowmil7 жыл бұрын
They do die before the next set except when I go into the pod. Nothing dies when I'm in the pod. I'm doing like 20% of the damage being done to the adds.
@NotOlzen7 жыл бұрын
there must be something done wrong by the raid in general. we raid like 20 ppl useally. and they die real fast. i can barely dot up the pyromancer and cast starfall before the pyromancer is dead. so we are talking 3-4 GDC's
@sophieatkinson127 жыл бұрын
In my opinion and this is shared by my guild who raid mythic, shadow priests and boomkins don't belong in a pod. SPs especially because of the ramp up time. High Command was made for those classes. That is a fight that is a wet dream for those classes. If you leave them out of a pod and let them do raw dps uninterrupted they can do 3M+ dps and you'll stroll through the fight. Crappy melee or classes who have sub-par AOE should be in the pods. Also two healers should rotate the first pod because that's a chance for their mana to regen.
@NotOlzen7 жыл бұрын
i agree that i shouldn't be in pods its definitely not optimal, but it seems not many in my raids are willing to do it. but eh, im fine with it.
@Melodeath007 жыл бұрын
But, doing all those "other jobs" are usually easier than simply just playing the fight the "normal way". Sure, getting rid of any fears one might have towards the issue, is a useful thing to do, but I fail to see how this has any effect on your overall skill lvl, or how it's going to make doing the regular Heal/Tank/Dps jobs any easier to do.
@MrJayza897 жыл бұрын
Melodeath00 it's completely dependant on the job at hand. Something like the pods on high command are a bad example of what preach was trying to explain. What he's trying to explain is that there are some fights that require some tasks to be done whilst still keeping up dps. The idea is that having to perform extra tasks whilst still maintaining dps means that when you take away that extra task and are required to just do dps it's more simple to you as a player who has now gotten used to doing more than just dps.

Michael Simmons I'm still using Darkmoon in the reliquary trinket and a mage was telling me that I needed more stamina because 9 million Health wasn't enough to be able to tank bosses in my only response is "well actually let me educate you first good sir as a monk tank the reliquary gives me almost 4 million and absorb and my other trinket is the Darkmoon deck which is one of the strongest tank trinkets in the game so sit the fuck back and you respect me and I will make sure the boss respects the rune" we are moving to heroic but we keep getting new recruits that need gear and I am not going to take upgrades from them lol.

Michael Simmons yeah we just cleared normal for the second time it was the first time I was there because I deceived on her first clear and I was replaced with our Druid tank back up but that night the same person that was telling me I needed more Health was also telling a Windwalker pug that we got that they were possibly a carry because they had intellect gems and an inch flask and unenchanted items on despite the fact they were decked out in her Rogue tier best in slot legendaries and the pantheon Trinket and the fact that DPS was actually there off-spec in the Romaine spec heels so I honestly think the dude telling people that they're wrong was just on a high horse because he's also a flavor of the month 3 roller
