Shenandoah Tim. I’m not sure what you mean by pompous from your perspective Your original reply was pompous in the true meaning of the word. To assume that I and most people would not know that the kings guards are purely ceremonial is to do a disservice to most. The public face of the monarchy has always been built on ceremony and ritual and that is a large part of their public appeal. I would suggest that any real threat would be dealt with by forces mainly unseen by the public. My original comment and probably all of your 75% of people who comment on tourists who should know better are deeply frustrated by the vain and ridiculous behaviour of a proportion of tourists who show no respect for the ceremonial nature of the guards. A desire to show the world that they have been close to royalty seems to overide what should be their sense of respect for dedicated guards who have committed a large part of their lives to representing the reigning monarch. They are not put there for photos. They are part of a system that has existed for centuries and agree with that or not the world would be a poorer place if that were not the case. I.

The conversation has been interesting. I thank you for that. I live in New Zealand, as far away from Britain as you can get. I am not particularly interested in the royal family but I do believe if there was a bit more respect for our fellow humans and the roles they play the world might be less disturbing. However, that respect needs to be earned and I would say that the dedication . of the kings guards in the positions that they hold has earned them the right to expect respect from others. I see the majority of tourists disregarding that. I also have been guilty of lack of respect and I withdraw my original comment. Pomposity is the way a person tries to prove themselves superior to others by using language and speech that presents itself in a formal way. I’m sure you are not guilty of that. Best wishes

The problem arises when people touch or hold the horses reins or bridle. They are then taking control of the horse from the rider. Hence the shouting.

They are teaching the horse that if he swings his head and threatens, they back off. Which is a good thing in one way with the crowds, but not so good for his grooms 😄

I don't know if people understand that by holding the reins they're taking control of the horse. This could prove to be not only harmful to the horse but the guard as well. This horse however is having no part of it and wants people to be afraid of him and does an excellent job in keeping them at bay. Bravo 👏

@ChrisAndCats

@@colleenobrien8212 it's not a case of stupid - they're on duty, they can' only do so much. However tourists are constantly tickling, rubbing and even getting near the horses eyes with outstretched fingers (whilst looking the other way), so it's bound to get tiresome at best after a bit. To give you an idea, one guy in a feather looking coat, made to punch a horse on the face not so long ago. The guard pressed the alarm button but it took 3 tries and alert from a filmer before they appeared by which time it was way too late.
