My weather radio beat the alerts on my phone by 3 minutes yesterday. It's usually not that much, but if the tornado had touched down a few miles west that extra 3 minutes could have saved my life. Thankfully, it didn't hit here, but if it had, I'd have been grateful for the extra heads up. And last April when the tornado did clip me, it was my weather radio, not my phone, that woke me up first. 1000% agree with Ryan on everyone having one. Sometimes those seconds or minutes really do make the difference. I barely had 2 minutes of warning last year, enough to get pants on but not a shirt or shoes. My phone went off as I was throwing on my pants, after I'd already gotten up, heard the warning, and started throwing something on to get to the shelter. I've never been so grateful for 45 seconds or so.

Mine goes off, but it’s not for my area. I have reset it multiple times, and it still gives alerts for areas 50 or so miles away. One of the recommended radios. I miss my Radio Shack weather radio.

She grew up in Kentucky and Georgia.

Our local NOAA weather radio tower had to be removed because the power plant it was located at closed down and the new property owners wouldn't allow it to stay. So for the past 8 months our NOAA weather radios no longer work and I've been told there are no plans to find a new location. So we must now rely on cell phones to get warnings however we have very poor cell phone reception in the area. If bad weather is coming at night, I stay up until it moves out. I am so afraid we are going to get a tornado, especially at night, and a lot of people will have no warning. If you can keep an extra eye on central Illinois for us Ryan, it would be much appreciated!
@garyargabrite156210 ай бұрын
I love your coverage!! I am curious why you never talk about making sure that the Wireless Emergency Alerts "WEA", "Imminent Threat" is turned on all of your cell phones. The NWS sends out the Tornado Alerts that ate received by your cell phone, as well as Flash Flood and Severe Storms. Anything that the NWS sends plus State and Local Alert Orginators. It all location based and has saved thousands of lives. But some people turn off the Imminent Threat so it won't wake them up. Crazy as that sounds, i have an uncle that turns off his NOA Radio at night so it won't wake them up. I thought that is why you have it! But keep up the good work being the best of the best!!!!

Growing up in Oklahoma, at least in Tulsa, we tested our tornado sirens every Wednesday at noon. In St Louis, it's the first Monday of the month. It is a stark contrast, and we had regular tornado drills in school, but I can honestly say I've never seen a tornado drill over media! Pretty cool (and also mind-blowing that the word tornado was banned from media less than a century ago vs today)

I think it would be an awesome opportunity to educate the public and bring them more severe weather safety and awareness!!! It's just a thought... Ooops, wrong guy!
