Interesting. I just watched a 12 minute video about a person making breakfast--and it's not like it was a recipe video or anything--yet I thoroughly enjoyed it. You seem to have a very positive, outgoing personality that's quite soothing. Looking forward to more videos!

Hi Emma, you might not realise this but you have saved me several times back 6 years ago. I remember discovering your channel as i wanted to learn about Japan and visit. I was going through my worst depression phase at that time and wanted to give up. But part of the reason for being and not giving up was watching your videos mainly kitchen chats, its just you, food and the way you conveyed your chats with honesty. I still dont know what it is. But watching kitchen chats made me have a purpose and also get back to my passion into cooking. Im so happy now. But when i do get sad or depressed sometimes, I rewatch your videos just to pick me up. Thank you. I have been following you for a long time, and I am so happy to have a creator like you on KZbin. Hope you have a lovely day!

With fruits and veggies you should eat seasonally, If its in winter time of course fruits and apples are going to be expensive. Just check around with local growers or stores and see what's avaible. Also a folding lap table would be nice for putting stuff down on the ground and give you a nice mini table and when not in use, it lays against the wall without taking a lot of space up.

I watched your tour last night and now see you have two pull up bars. How about laying a sheet of plywood over the two and create some more storage space?
@TheMusachioedBrony8 жыл бұрын
I was thinking she should ask the landlord if those can be removed, and then put some kind of very tall vertical unit that can act as a desk area and storage. I would then ditch that table and put in some deep comfy chair or small sofa. The vertical space is waaaayyyy underutilized in that apartment, and the table does absolutely nothing to help. Kirsten Dirksen did an amazing video of a writer living in a tiny apartment in New York-it is about 5 years old. This woman was also a professional organizer, and she had racks going up to the ceiling. Her bed was also in a loft. I was astounded how much she was able to fit and how organized it all was. For sure there are modular systems in Japan that would work that are not expensive. Then if/when she leaves she can sell it to someone else.

Try looking for a wee piece of wood (or a wooden chopping board) to go under the plastic chopping board - a little bigger or same size- then you can just take away the plastic board when youre finished and sit your bowls and such and hot things on the wood (at worst you'll discolour the wood if its reaaaaaalllly hot) so there's no more danger breakfasts on the stairs! you could get a wee stacking basket thing for the veg cupboard so you can store more of the cupboard goods in there and keep them neat and easy to access! A folding lap table would be perfect for the floor picnics in the morning too! If there's little storage baskets with the window suckers on you could arrange some things up on your door too! Its a very cute little place! I'd want to fill it with fairy lights and blankets haha!

I'm always shocked by the price of fruit in japanese videos, the climate seems suited to growing many kinds, particularly in the south. Is there a reason for it costing so much? I always eat 3 portions of fruit per day but bananas, apples,pears, oranges, kiwi ect are relatively cheap here in Ireland. Only berries and melons or 'exotic' fruit (mangos) cost more.

not sure if i'm super right, but usually japan is fucking tiny in terms of farmland/agriculture so they buy land and workers from other countries (eg. vietnam or wherever is cheap and profitable) grow crops there, and then have to bring it back to their country so prices are slightly higher. that said, their crops are organic and outrageously healthy (apparently yummier too). i'm guessing that the amount of effort put in, or quality of products are one of the few factors which make it so pricey. source: some of fam in vietnam work for them hahaha
@osmansuleyman98238 жыл бұрын
I think you got it right the first time; the rent on the store space is going to be high so everything they sell has to be marked up to cover it. Import costs will be a factor but not to the extent of having a $2 apple.
@rozharris68348 жыл бұрын
Fruit is expensive in Japan everywhere, not just Tokyo. But I find that other groceries, the price is comparable to or cheaper than Australia. I've asked some Japanese people and they thought lack of agricultural land, shipping costs or import costs. Fruit that's local or in season tends to be cheaper.

Fun fact: most rv's have a little piece that goes over the kitchen sink while not in use for food prep/counter space very much like your little cutting board invention. So it's a wonder why Japanese apartments don't have removable covers for the sink area to allow for a small counter as well. They are so handy.

Norah Shagir there are few cultures where they eat rice and fish first thing in the morning. When I went to Jamaica I saw that they ate ackee and saltfish with rice for breakfast. they also eat plantains for breakfast too.

For rice is easy. Boil 2 cups of water and put 1 cup of rice (basmati, i.e.). When you do not hear the bubling of the water on the bottom of the pan, the rice is ready. Also you can use a spoon to see the bottom of the pan.

Thank you so much for this video! Living in a place with totally different foods than I'm used to makes it so hard to figure out what to cook, so this actually helped a lot. I love your videos!

This reminds me of my tiny apartment in the states that I'm currently living at. Cooking is such a struggle with a small kitchen but it's also really good to force you to use as few dishes as possible + messes are usually much more manageable! :D

that lotus root just made me sick to my stomach. I think if you hacked up and got rid of the holes, I'd be fine, but that crap sets off my trypophobia every freaking time.

what is it like having trypophobia? I'll never know. lots of little holes look incredibly aesthetically pleasing to me. (not trying to be rude lol)
