tia cooper People also use to tell me that I am so wise. But I think the reason for this wisdom is probably knowledge and thinking. I am spending a lot of time by thinking about certain ideas or topics or stories. I reflect a lot of my life. And I also google and read a lot of thinks on the internet. For instance, there was a time in ny youth where I was informing myself a lot about introversion. I have read a whole book about it and I was also thinking about it bc I am an introvert. And I watch many youtube videos. But I think a lot..A LOT. But I am sure that you are also really wise. I hope you have a nice day.💕

Wisedom comes from experience. This is someone who has gone through stuff in her life (and is still going through stuff). She has had to seek help and knowledge... "therapy", where (at least in my case) you gain a million "Ah Ha!" moments where you learn some deep introspective things about life, truth, and self. Plus,... Tessa is a smart cookie! God/genetics didn't make no fool. Despite her challenges, the girl is good (Can you tell I'm a fan?).

“A great way to never write anything is to enter into creativity with fear” has my mind blown,, it’s so simple and I’m so glad I heard it from you. Since the first time I watched this video in 2017, I’ve sung my original songs at two small gigs, cried a lot, and decided that I’m not going to give up on music!! Everything is simultaneously insignificant and wonderful. It’s good.

OK Tessa. I have to make my final art proyect this month and was terrified of doing something that was not worth it. This (even tho is about music) actually helped. I think you just helped me a little to get out of my stress and fear, I'll try to create and see where it leads me.

As someone who's not at all a musician, I want to also share how helpful your words are for me about all art (and even things that don't feel like art). Like, I'm in the process of writing my personal statements for grad school and it's so hard to feel unique or to create a nice progression of thoughts and tones, etc. And what you're sharing is exactly what I keep telling myself - write something, write more than you need to and you can go back and revise and perfect. So thank you, as always, for sharing your insight in such a lovely and eloquent way. I'm in love with your way with words. :)

Thank you so so much for shining this kind of light on the expectation of writing music versus how someone may be expecting too much out of how they're music is supposed to sound. I thought that I had to conjure a whole new melodic sequence completely different from how anything else had ever sounded on my own and you helped me realize that not everyone can be mozart and Beethoven and create something new out of nothing. That you can be inspired by little bits of everything around you. (Not saying to do stuff like copying, just that everything has inspiration from something else.) Thank you.

You are an artist whatever that looks like, because it's not the art but you that shines through it all. I'm a singer, and I've been making my living singing other people's songs for a few years now, and it's so easy to forget to pay attention to my own art and creative process. I find myself in this position a lot and there are many different things I tried that could work for you. One is writing up as many lyrics as you can come up with that could highlight or fit that line. You can write as much as you want and when you're done, ignore the original line and match them up together to what could fit in a melody or a topic. When I first tried this I ended up completely forgetting about the first line and lead the song into a whole other direction. It works and is also good for testing out different things. You could also keep a journal or folder to write all those lyrics down. If something ever comes to you, write it down. When you come back to it you may also find a lyric that fits what you're currently writing. If not that, you could also piece them together. I wrote one song with a lyric like that and I solved it by finishing the whole entire song, whether it lived up to the lyric or not. If you play it several times, you can see if it did end up fitting or some lyrics were definitely shaky and fix them accordingly. Hope this helps!

Tessa, I'm just stunned about how we think alike! I have a performer background and I've always saw myself as only a reproducer, not a creator. Once I've figured out the performing is also an act of creativity I've allowed myself to delve into the world of songwriting. And as time goes by I've come to realize that creativity is more like a muscle than a random strike of ideas. Also having, like I said, a performer background, one thing I've learned is that maybe you won't get calmer over the years. You might always get nervous and that's ok. But you will learn how your body reacts in that specific situation, and then you can go on prepared. Ex: I know that when I go on stage and I'm nervous, the first thing that fails is my respiratory support, so I focus on that. So, yeah, I think the stage is my greatest teacher. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your art.

Only two minutes in and I've shouted "YES SOMEONE SAID IT" three times already. It took me a while to get over the whole "I need to be ORIGINAL, I need to be ME, but who AM I" madness. When I started consuming more art, I was able to MAKE more art. I think that's true with anything, but especially music. Do not feel guilty for sounding like something else, friends. I've gotten to a comfortable place where I can freely make music and know it will be original to me- not because of something I'm actively DOING, but simply by the fact that whatever I make WILL inherently HAVE to have my footprint on it.

I completely agree. Going to art school and writing my own music really caused me to struggle with the idea that nothing is really "original" and that is ok. Art is supposed to be fueled and inspired by like and other artists. The is one of the most beautiful things about it. Everything, in a sense is a collaboration. This video perfectly puts that idea into words as always. I am really curious how other song writers deal with not so much sounding the same as a song by another artist, but after the fact realizing you have basically written the same song you have previously written but with different words? I struggle with this A LOT. Advice appreciated!!!!

I totally agree with you about the whole stage fright thing. I just performed solo in front of an audience for the first time today, it was in front of my entire English class and I totally went flat and messed up on the chords and lyrics in front of all of my peers, but I don't really mind it. I know that it's just a step that needs to be taken in order to better myself as a performer and discover some things about myself as a person. A wise person once told me to just think of performances as practice and I've been living by that ever since.

Part of me is so so jealous that you started songwriting as an adult, and so got to think rationally about how to get better at it. I started as a middle schooler, and it was the way I processed my depression and grief. I'm so grateful that that was a healthy tool I found to get through the worst, most confusing years of my life, but it also became so attached to depression because of that, y'know? And so I really felt like I had to be feeling things really strongly and writing purely from emotion and passion (so it had to come out ALL AT ONCE or it was worthless) -- but that it also had to be an objectively good song. It was too much pressure to put on something that should be healthy work. Being creative for a living is confusing. I'm so grateful for your perspective on these things, it's helped me untangle some of the hangups I have about creating.

Great tips. Faced a lot myself and have backed away from doing what I wanted to do, due to the fact that nothing was original. Keep up the good work and the good vibes!

In an interview, Bill Hader once talked about how he would get the worst anxiety right before doing skits on SNL and to combat it he would come out saying something other than what was written on the script, just for his opening line, and it would immediately calm him down because he realized he screwed up, which was his biggest fear, but he was still there and everything was fine. So whenever I’m performing I like to remember that little anecdote to remind me that even if I mess up things will go on and everything will be okay ❤️ love you Tessaaaaa
