I read an interview many years ago with James Gandolfini, and he described how he had to pick up and move from NY to CA several times for various film roles before hitting it big with, "The Sopranos." When the interviewer asked him how stressful it must have been to keep moving from coast to coast, he replied, "Not at all, I can fit all of my worldly possessions into three (3) large hefty bags, throw them in my truck & go. I never understood why moving is such a stressful situation for people." Words to live by..

When I was basically made homeless after my grandfather died, I had a place the next day and had filled it with goodwill and craigslist items for less than $200. Rent was $400. I eventually recovered some of my belongings, but even then it was not enough to fill my car. I can see how having so little can be liberating.

sound advice, I'm 24, being broke and trying to finish up my degree has forced me to adopt this mindset. I've seen it all too often where people stress themselves out, through over-extended finances on things that they don't need. What it is, is vanity and some unrecognized desire to live fast...grow up and become mom and dad before you're ready.

I have wholly divested myself of all my possession 3 different times in my life and I recommend it to every one.. yes I am mgtow since age 30 and am 49 now. My rule always is if it doesn't fit in the pick up truck then too bad for me it stays behind for the next tenant. I moved 15 times by the age of 35 and I still end up moving to a nicer cheaper place every 5 years. Not having alot of possessions is a good feeling. My best friend's house burnt down with 18 years of his life. It was devastating. Insurance replaced his house but not the things he was attached to. If my place burnt down I would grab my cat, my laptop and my marshmallows and wouldn't shed a single tear for the rest.

Absolutely true about stuff. I started accumulating stuff mostly because of women. I have a house in the city, a farm, a house at the beach, etc. All I do is work to keep all the stuff up because of it is ingrained into me, mostly by biology, to serve the women which includes my two daughters who all want stuff. If I were a bachelor, I would not have anymore than I could move in a pickup truck. It comes to the point where you don't own stuff, it owns you. You get to the point, as you grow older, there arises the intense desire to "simplify man". However, that attitude is in opposition to that biological perogitive to serve the women. And doing your duty in that manner, in this era of radical feminism, doesn't have the payback it use to back in the day. No wonder men are going crazy or, going their own way. In summary, no stuff and no need for long term relationships, is freedom.

I support and admire minimalist, but we need to remember that we can't be racing to the bottom. The more young people shrink their required space, the more young people will be given smaller spaces for the same rent and upkeep. Be a bit stoic. Don't forget to live your life despite the world instead of constantly yielding to it.
@YksiSuomalainen11 жыл бұрын
I agree that we become better men and better people when we live as minimalistic as necessary. Experiencing a Spartan life style really changes you and makes you realize and focus on what really is the most important things in life. Avoid luxury, value getting information from all sides, think, get a good healthy body and when you meet a woman you like enjoy her passionately and take her animalistically when ever you feel like it. Try it and it will change your life.

Here's where I have some reservation on this concept. First, I am a MGTOW....five years and counting. Just in that time frame, my personal wealth has increased four folds, because of the time saved on NOT pleasing or compromising someone else but me. That being said, it gave me the freedom to crank up my career and the side business.......and in turn....my wealth. So that being said, I like vacations, but for me....a very nice car or a expensive piece of furniture or art is my indulgence. What are you suppose to do......pile your money in a safe and leave it there until you croak? Not me....enjoying it while I can......and without being debt ridden. My two cents.

I think it's just that the people who don't have a lot of stuff have very few hobbies/interests. Yeah sure you can get by with a laptop, clothes, etc. but what if one of the joys of your life is tinkering with shit, working with electronics, building things, doing physics/chemistry experiments, building and modifying computers, playing guitar, etc like me? Getting rid of all my stuff would leave a void in what makes me me and would likely decrease my net life satisfaction. I'm willing to live with the burden of moving all my stuff around because of that. Hell, I like moving to a new, fresh place. I get lots of exercise and I find lots of stuff that I had been looking for. So, I don't think this is a one size fits all kind of situation. The only difference with women is that their stuff tends to be superficial and/or virtually useless things from a purely utilitarian standpoint. Where a man might have a bunch of tools that can be used to create other useful things a woman will have a shitload of makeup, clothes and shoes that can only be used for aesthetic and/or superficial goals.

People are paying more for storage than the crap is worth.....and my personal favorite--there's a demand for RV storage! I can't throw out my book collection! But I could sell the first editions for a good amount of money. I have found myself not replacing dishes when they're broken or cutlery when lost because I don't need much, I've made pretty much the same choices as many people here, stopped watching telly, never buy anything I won't use more than once (besides food). My partner doesn't understand how I he has so much more clothes and shoes than I do but I don't see the point in having that much, his sister has three rooms full of clothes, shoes and bags and she bloody uses them. I always wear army boots because you can go anywhere and not have to change or break your ankles with ridiculous twigs and you only need one pair, maybe two. Also, all the furniture I have was either inherited or given to me, I've never bought a piece of furniture in my life, in fact most of it was from people throwing out their perfectly good barely used furniture because they were buying the latest matching not as good rubbish. I attempted to buy a futon and someone just happened to be upgrading theirs, it's like people just love throwing their money away, but hey, free stuff. Even my sister is a little guilty, though not quite to the extreme, of the woman thing of "now we live together, we need new stuff, _our_ stuff, you had that stuff with such a girlfriend, I don't want to think about that", it's sadly very common for men to be treated as though they are possessions in and of themselves and don't have such attachments. But I'm keeping my books, they don't tend to just disappear if accidentally dropped. Other than that, the less you have, the less you have to lose.

Couldn't agree with this more. We are downsizing serious and moving into smaller housing. Our kids are grown, don't need all the space for them and their stuff. For example. truth...a hard lesson Ive learned the hard way. see my boxes of crap Ive mailed back to my parents house because i have no idea what to do with it, and my junk closet of who knows whats in it. and if youve ever spent any part of your life collecting something this becomes more painfully obvious....while if you are moving a lot this makes a lot sense, and is in general a good philosophy(see the junk closet and anybodys junk garage). I dont think i need to go as extreme as this guy I am also a bit paranoid about the end of the world which has fueled the "I might need it so keep it" philosophy. i should also add, a lot of things in my junk closet arent useless garbage....they just dont get used often which fuels the problem. but overall....if I could do it again, I'd move out to college with a lot more of my crap buried at my parents house. in fact I fear having to go through those boxes one day.
