I have to say I'm no pro but also no noob, but I always felt like a little something was missing with my sound set up. I have all the gadgets umik-1 laptop calibration mic from receiver, and even spl meter. But let me tell you I came across this video and watched it like 6x even wrote things down, and I sat here and did what you recommend and wow fixing the delay the right way is a day and night difference! I have to say thank you and keep them informational videos coming..

As an audio engineer i can only say .. Bravo! 👏 & Thank you- We're kind of a geeky lot, generally, but you really nailed the fundamental Science of Sound & proper Surround Set-up, based on these (actually simple) principles. Viewers, don't be intimidated by the single formulas presented, its real basic & answers the question of HOW to dial your system in Properly, for Max enjoyment via accurate signal balance. I'm stoked, because besides my leisure enjoyment of everything I'm going to surround if I endeavor to attempt to mix 5.1 it's important to have your monitoring system properly arranged so, that's something fun to look forward to as a Producer & Musical fiend.. I look forward to seeing how close JPL and Harman kardon come to setting up the delay using their system that has the mic which I will compare to my own measurements now... Thanks, Dude- nice job! 🙏🏽

You recommended not to use ceiling speakers, but if I wanted to build a Dolby Atmos system where ceiling speakers are a must, do you have any recommendations for that?
@FURognar5 жыл бұрын
I was assuming he was talking about main and surround speakers in the ceiling. A lot of people do that for aesthetics and they end up with terrible sound quality for their cinema

Hi, the video is great. One question, how should I place the delay on the speakers? Do I need hardware delay per speaker? or could apply some delay in the master in protools? If so, which one would you recommend? In my studio I have about 30 feet of difference between the front and back to the listening point.
@genuinejake9851 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Question........irregular basement "open floor plan" here. My left and right surround have very different wall distances. Left is say 8ft and 10 degrees behind me because of a window. Right speaker can either be 14 ft and 5 degrees AHEAD of my position or to get a similar 10 degrees behind me more like 18ft. Because of my stairway. Is this simply too far to overcome? This is a 7.1.4 setup. Receiver is a new Sony so it's fairly capable but i dunno about THAT capable. Thanks in advance.

This explains a lot. I just got the Dolby Atmos soundbar system from Samsung. It came with two surround rears and a sub. 7.1.4 Do you recommend putting your two surround left and right speakers at ear level? Or would placing them higher be more beneficial? I'm struggling to figure it out. Any help would be great

Great video, very informative. In an object based setup ( ATMOS ) which utilizes height speakers, what would your recommendation be for 4 direct radiating speakers as far as placement? Dolby recommends 2 L&R slightly in front and to the sides of the listening position and 2 L&R slightly behind and to the sides of the listening position, however I'm assuming these are in ceiling speakers and that's why they recommend this set up. I'm taking bookshelf speakers and mounting them up on my ceiling. Do you recommend 2 height channels L&R directly to the sides ( about 12' apart ) and angled down towards the listening position and 2 height channels L&R directly behind the seating position (also around 10-12' apart ) angled down towards the listener ( NOT to the sides) or would you yourself stick to Dolbys recommendation? My concern is that the drivers would not be pointed at the listener and firing into a "blank area" using Dolbys recommendation. I totally agree with speakers facing you ( the listener ) and I cannot find anything anywhere about using direct radiating speakers for an object based set-up.

Is it ok to put my left and right surround up in the ceiling but pointed towards me? I really cannot run wires on the floor since I have a 2 year old.

onkyo speaker set up is smarter.. you will just have to measure all speakers from the center of your couch & adjust the meters or foot to the speakers distance option on the remote of the onkyo & thats it you good to go.. onkyo will automatically adjust the delay & volume of each speakers for you..

How do I set this in my Marantz AV7702? I can only set the distance of the individual speaker, not the delay in milliseconds!
@TheChondrolover5 жыл бұрын
Cinema Sound So I just set each speaker to the same distance as the furthest away speaker instead of calculating milliseconds? Or do you mean that I have to physically have them at the same distance?
@TheChondrolover5 жыл бұрын
@@cinema_sound5003 Yeah, but I can´t delay speakers in milliseconds in my Marantz. I can only set the distance in Meters/Feet from the speaker to the MLP. So how do I calculate the virtual distance then if I can´t use the millisecond delay-trick in my surround processor? Do I have to rely on Audyssey for that calculation?
