The biggest problem with collecting Vintage Camping gear from the Backpacking Revolution period is the smell of the polyurethane water proofing of tents, tarps, packs, and rain clothing as it chemically degrades. Here is how I get rid of that smell so I can use the gear in the manner in which it was intended.

Make sure the Revivex you buy hasn't been sitting on your outfitters' shelf for several years. I bought the same TNF Sierra tent at an estate sale in 1985.The tent was in a stuff-sack, I inquired of the price."I bought that tent in college, it was over a hundred dollars then, and it was only used once. I've gotta get at least a hundred for it" "Do you mind If I pull it out, to see what we've got?" I asked. "Sure" she replied. Her living room was filled with salesgoers, and as soon as I pulled the tent out of the stuff-sack the whole place smelled like sh#t."Oh, gawd get that thing outta here" she said, rushing me out the front, while I gathered up the tent. "I'll take 20 bucks" she said. Deal !. A Mirazyme bath, and silicone spray on the fly and I used that tent for years. Still have the tent, although the rainfly is too UV damaged for use.Mirazyme is also great for polypro undies and such, where regular detergents don't kill the microbial stuff, and they can start to get a funk just sitting in a drawer.

Well, now I know how to get a better price at Estate sales, thanks! Mirazyme does work wonders on stinkified undies and such. I get my Revivex from Amazon, I use it kin da regular--- Thanks for watching!

My own suggestion, and what's worked well for me is to dunk the whole tent using a tote or five gallon bucket.Soak about 5 minutes, then set the tent up or hang it,preferably in the shade. It's never damaged the existing PU coating. Looking forward to your video of your using the tent. This tent was my primary tent for a few decades, many winter backpacking trips, in several states in subzero cold. I once spent a night w. my son in a dumping 6 inches of rain, roads washed out for miles around, not a drop in the tent. Another great thing was being able to set the rainfly up with a couple of sticks (or trekking poles). There has probably been a dozen times I've waited out a thunderstorm while on the trail. Properly staked out the thing is bombproof. At a group campout on the Ohio River, I had left to drive the 3 short miles home to get a shower and change of clothes, upon my return about 25 tents were destroyed, a downbursting thunderstorm had come through during my short absence, with the TNF Sierra being the lone survivor of the ordeal. When the extreme winds hit, most took shelter in their cars. A friend reported that "Your tent didn't even move !".

All of my tent videos have been put on hold due to some extreme weather we had down here. I shoot most of my outdoor footage in and around a dispersed campsite in the Sam Houston National Forest. But we had what is called down here "A locally heavy thunderstorm" right smack dab on top of SHNF and about 20 inches of rain fell in about an hour, with associated high winds and likely a number of bursts throughout the Forest. The whole dang forest was closed from 26 April until 21 May and it is slowly opening. They're making monthly reports on openings, but as of 21 June the site I use is still closed. Now we're seeing daytime temps in the high 90s with heat indexes in triple digits. If my campsite opens before mid September, its going to be too hot for an Old Man to safely go camping by himself. When things do shake out, its gonna take a bit to re-prioritize and re-organize those vids.

Thanks for the info. I have some gear on the verge of smelliness, and have tossed a couple of old packs because of the stink. And also the PU was peeling off the fabric.

Thanks for watching! There's nothing you can really do about the peeling, except to peel it off. Sone folks will try a home brew PU re-coat, but I think that's a bit too much work and messes up an original piece.

Thank you, Sarge. My Eureka Alpine Meadows and my Moss Outland, same stinky poo and tacky. I did a video on discussing my Moss. So, I hung them in closets to offgas. I then treated everything with Nik and Grangers on the other. The flies felt like gossamer afterwards and the stink left. I still keep them hung on close hangers. My MEC tarp is still somewhat tacky but doesn't stink any longer. everything is at least 25 yrs old. Thank-you!

Reminds me of some Craftsman screwdrivers. It seems it doesn't matter if it's canvas or treated nylon, they get smelly.

Any idea what my GI surplus poncho is coated with? It sure does stink. Makes it hard to use. I think I will try your magic potion. Probably wont hurt.

If it was made any time after the 1960s, I bet that its PU and the Revivex should work. Thanks for watchning!
