Easy lesson on how to convert block chords to spread voicings. Using the song: "When Sunny Gets Blue" (Fisher/Segal). This lesson will give your ballads a professional sound. Rather than playing block chords in the left hand, this lesson will show you how to get a better, cleaner, and richer piano sound distributing the melody and harmony between the two hands, spread out over two octaves or more. Free score and exercise is on my website here: www.kenthewitt...

Hi Kent, this is an excellent instruction video that has helped me with this particular tune and can be applied to most other tunes as well - which I will endeavor to do. I've been following your videos for many years and purchased both volumes of your Jazz Piano books. I appreciate when your videos provide references back to your books - a reminder what a treasure trove these books are. I print those sections out into a binder just like you showed. I agree with the other positive sentiments in the comments section here. I find your instructions straight forward and logical and easy for me to follow - thank you so much!

Hey Kent, I usually spend several hours a day watching KZbin videos about jazz piano and searching for new sounds and instructions. Among all instructional channels on KZbin yours is undoubtedly one of the absolute greats, truly. When anyone asks me where I learned to play piano, your channel is always mentioned among a tight circle of two or three others. You are really doing something special in a league of your own, entertaining and enlightening. I would love to meet you to shake your hand. Much love!

Those spread voicings make better use of the keys. I used to play some of these songs from a tin pan alley fake book 60 years ago...on the accordion, altho the piano does more for them. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thanks for this as well as thank you for the book. I love the way your videos complement the book and vice-versa. I’ve long felt your book is a real contribution to the literature on jazz piano -- clearer and more practical than others like Mehegan or Levine. It is the videos that then elevate everything further, making your contribution to the canon of jazz literature even more striking. Thank you for your giving nature.

Kent, Idk if the bent finger is due to arthritis, but I was able to reverse arthritis by avoiding seed oils especially canola from takeout food), seeds and grains. Also general reduction in carbohydrates and sugars in general and also alcohol.

Hello Kent, Great video...thank you. I'm somewhat of a beginner, I do know my block chords, rootless voicings etc. and I do understand open spread voicings. Question: I'm not quite sure when to use block voicings as opposed to open voicings. Should I abandon block voicings as I progress? or, only use block voicings when in the upper registers to thicken the sound? Is it purely subjective on my part as to how I voice my chords or are there some guidelines? For example, playing solo or with a bass player, does this come into play as to how I should voice my chords? If anyone else would like to assist in helping me understand this please feel free to comment. Thank You!
