Yes! chanting itself is a prayer.

Yes. They do both. I feel closer to theravada but mahayana buddhisms have prayer. The former are gestures of good will and wishing others love and kindness. The difference is that from buddhist view (heavily generalizing) the "answers" to prayers manifests via a person's actions. I've heard monks say that others are blessed but not from an outside source but that the blessed person's actions produced good results and the monks share in that person's happiness as a result.

With SGI (in all Nichiren sects to some extent), their prayers are in the back of their daimoku booklet. There is a prayer for the decreased. Prayer to have ones wished granted (can't remember the wording), and prayer for others, world happiness, and their sensai. Before chanting they say a prayer (nam...) before going into the chant of dimoku. After the prayers above they end with another nam three times

SGI members recite portions of the 2nd and 16th Chapters of the Lotus Sutra before, or in the middle or at the end, of chanting NamMyohoRengeKyo. There is a portion of the prayers that determines to “accomplish my own human revolution, change my destiny, and fulfill all of my wishes.” Note: Our view is that nothing, nothing outside of ourselves is capable of giving us absolute happiness. If there’s a human revolution, a change in our destiny or a fulfillment of our wishes, it’s because individually and as a group, we are changing our actions, our thoughts, words and deeds. Another word for it is karma, we are changing our karma, and it’s a grand battle!

SGI - Nichiren Daishonin Members, we do not believe in God which the Christians/Catholics worship, we only believe in the mystic law (law of cause and effect )of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo which we chant infront of the Gohonzon ( which is the object of our worship)

SGI Buddhist pray to an sacrament (the gohonzon). On it list Nichiren name and protective deities. The basic law in all "buddhisms" is the kamma or volitional actions we, ourselves, act in with wholesome qualities as the foundation. In SGI (Nichiren ShoShu and off shoots) kamma can be manifested by chanting to the sacrament to make things happen in their favor. It's called the "Mystic Law." (Nam myoho renge kyo) There isnt a creator but Nichiren, in his Gosho, did mention there were protective deities but not too worship as one would a creator of the universe. I practiced Nichiren ShoShu for a year and SGI for another two. Not together, of course. I left because it was more material based with too much focus on sensai and not with The Buddha's suttas (or even sutras) themselves. It's an interesting religion. No god involved.
