Dear Francis, it is beyond words how much this has helped me and improved my understanding and confidence for turning right at the traffic lights! I was so anxious about this until now. Tutorial just couldn't have been better put! Exactly what we learners need. Just the words and pictures in the textbooks are often not enough. Being actually in the seat and being able to face real case scenarios at the busiest times and the trickiest junctions we can face is where the deal is, that's the amazing beauty of this! From zero to hero just by watching this tutorial! Thanks a million!

I find most cars go nose to nose. I think doing it the way you suggested would confuse or frustrate other drivers and they will assume you're blocking them. Great vid though. I've been driving for some years now and I still get nervous about turning right at cross roads like this. A junction near me, there is a specific light for turning right as well as a normal straight on light, but lots of drivers ignore it and go forward into the junction before the green light shows for the right turn but obviously when the normal green light is on. Is that allowed? Some motorists who are familiar with the crossroad seem to become impatient if you wait for the green light to turn right.

I'm German and an experienced driver, but I'm watching your videos to prepare for my first time behind a wheel in Ireland. It's so interesting to me that turning behind each other at a crossroad is considered the safe and right option! On our streets that's a big no-no! You are taught to never ever do that in driving school so I don't think I will feel safe trying to do that...but I'll give it my best!

Francis plzz could u answer this question for me as it’s really confusing There are two lanes going in the same direction which lane do you have to drive in and why?
@GetDriving5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ava good question! You'd drive in the left most lane that goes your way. Because the left lane is for driving and the right lane is for overtaking and turning right. You might find that on the roads most people drive in the right lane because it's quicker but it's not necessarily correct. Watch out for road markings though so you can spot left turn only lanes on approach to traffic lights early. Hope this helps 😊

I do not live in the UK and this system of traffic lights really confuse me. Can anybody explain what’s the use of having traffic lights if you have to wait in the middle of the junction?! Beats the purpose of the light if you have to actually wait for a gap right? From where I come, you have a separate lane with a separate traffic light if you want to turn and a separate lane or lanes for going straight.

I recently passed and not so confident with turning right on these big crossroads, had a disaster where I was third car and I decided to follow the cars in front of me turning right hoping for the best, the lights turnt red and there was lots of oncoming traffic. @GetDriving5 жыл бұрын
You can stop in a yellow box only if you're turning right and your exit is clear. So if you're just waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic proceed like any other crossroad. If your exit is not clear because you're in traffic, for example, you can't enter the yellow box. Does that help?
@lovejetfuel40715 жыл бұрын
@@GetDriving So if I can get in the yellow box and wait for a gap, then I can go in the yellow box? But if im lets say car num 3 from the hold line then I should not go in the box? Also can you clarify what do you mean by if the ''exit is clear''. Thank you, your the best
@GetDriving5 жыл бұрын
Yeah you got it! If you're let's say car number 3 and you'll be waiting on a pedestrian crossing or in the way of other cars turning right then wait at the stop line. Exit is clear - when the road you're turning into is clear of traffic. So when that gap comes if you can't progress into that road and get off the box you also should wait at the stop line.

I don’t like the idea that nose to nose or pass behind is a judgement that each driver makes. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Traffic designers should have a sign indicating which the junction was designed for. Ideally (IMHO) the junction should always be designed for nose to nose, so traffic queuing behind doesn’t get in the way of any turning vehicles, and the turning lanes should be designed offset slightly so each has a clear view of the oncoming traffic.

The only way crossing behind will work is if traffic is light or you have roads full of courteous drivers. The senario where he positioned himself in the only gap left in the crossing would have blocked anyone else approaching who was wanting to turn, if you had cars doing the same both sides the crossroads would come to a stand still as there will be no room for cars to turn either way. To suggest it is safer is madness, turning nose to nose gives you a clear view of traffic going straight on from the other side, rather than trying to cut through a line of traffic wanting to turn behind you.

Had a similar problem when I was driving was in the second lane, wanting to turn right. But a car stopped in the middle of the junction, and her light turned red while she was in the middle of junction. She stayed in the middle and didn't move I had to honk my horn at her, because she was blocking my way then she started reversing back, I had no idea what she was doing. But then realised she was probably confused as her lights were red her side when she was in the crossroad area.
