That was an enormous help..thankyou..I had to drive out of my comfort zone earlier in the week and came up to a filter light that was red but with a green arrow pointing left.. and I wanted to turn left..thank goodness I got it right...your tutorial has made sense of it all..Jxx 😎⛱🌝🌞☀️💐🌻

Just beware you cannot turn on red in England, even after you stop and no one is coming.. England is not the United States..

Thank you! I passed my test two weeks ago and got really confused today. There was a straight ahead filter arrow but I was in the middle lane (left lane was left and straight ahead) so I wasn’t sure if the light was for me or for the other lane but now I know it’s for the direction of travel not just the lane lol the car behind beeped me 😂

I didn't know they called them Filter Lights in the UK. We usually just refer to them as either arrows or turn signals. You will even occasionally see a sign next to it stating like "left turn signal".

Here in america we simply call them turn signals, they tend to have 4 or 5 lights. Most arrows are green or yellow.

They are called filter lights because they used to be a black paint or film shape on the cover to make the arrow shape, these days they are normally just arrangements of LEDs.

just got a ticket for running a red light think they are broken as the light was red with green arrows ether side pointing straight ahead i will be appealing this as you can clearly see they are illuminated on the pictures they sent in the post

If you are trying to turn right at a crossroads, and the lights have the typical red, amber, and green circular lights, but also an attached right filter light, but no red or amber lights for the right turn (i.e. L shaped traffic light), can you turn right without the right filter light assuming no oncoming traffic? Or should you wait for the filter light?

Thats correct the car on the left should go but the car behind it hooted which then lead to both dark cars on the right to go through the red light when they should not have.

Hiya yes generally this is true - the only exceptions are when you see these filter arrows and you are going in the direction the arrow points.

So true!! In the United States in technical terms, unless a sign prohibits the right turn on red, you MAY, not must, turn right on red after you stop and look for traffic; that is motorist, bicyclist, and the peds.. You don't have to turn on red as it is your right to do so.. Just expect honkers, middle fingers, and rude blokes as they say there.. Me, just like you wait till it turns green regardless..

Wait so why are all the yellow and red lights circles and only the green lights an arrow shape? No wonder the drivers got confused, it would probably be more helpful to make them all a filter shape. This is what they do in Australian and The Netherlands at least. Is it only older installations Or are they all like this? Also, with that installation that had 4 lights in a vertical lines and the bottom one is a green left arrow. If that light was to go out because you are no longer allowed to turn left, will it just extinguish without any warning or yellow light, or does the installation display a yellow light at the same time as the red, to indicate that cars turning left will soon be no longer allowed to, while cars going straight can still not go. Or alternatively, do the lights always change to green (to allow all traffic to go) and it will never extinguish while the main light is red?

Hiya unfortunately the lights vary, some will have normal green lights where both sides go at the same time, some will have normal green lights but only let one side go at a time, others will have the filter arrows. 🤨

These filter lights are too sparse and many learner drivers, If the info is not rigorously integrated into the theory section, will have no concept of these filter lights existing. In oxford city for example these filter lights have a double edged sword as they at multiple places indicate into a right turn box, yet oncoming traffic is allowed to simultaneously come through, stranding 1-3 drivers in a stand out position within multiple lanes. This is on top of the confusion that the filter light only allowed the drivers into a zone which requires the drivers own judgement-making to execute the turn. There's very little that's universal about driving in the UK nowadays. Don't even get me started on the psychological phenomenon that is the Swindon magic roundabout.

It’s true that the implementation varies a bit. There are some junctions where a right hand (either 45° or right angle) green arrow does actually give you right of way all the way through, whereas others behave as you describe in that opposing moves can happen at the same time, with having to give way (sometimes at a stop line until it wears out) to opposite direction moves. Where I live, there are a couple that do the opposite within a short distance of each other, where one set are provided by the local Council, and the other the DfT for a top-end A road junction. You just have to learn the route to understand what to do. The only other comment is that it’s worth noting that lane markings, and road side signs should match the signalling (when you can see them). E.g. there were right turn only lane markings in some of the clips.

Hiya thanks for the question. Unfortunately if you are caught on camera or witnessed doing it wrong, depending on the offence committed, The current penalty for failing to stop for a red light is usually an £100 fine and 3 points on your licence. The points will stay on record for four years.
