Had the coach for more than 3 years. Let others change the oil and such. Thanks for the video. Now all I need to do is verify the model so I can get the right filters and I will be changing them myself this time (along with all the other things I need to do to make it road ready again.)..

Thanks for the Video. 30 year RVer but have a New 5th (3rd RV) with an Onan 5500. You flagged a good point on the GenSet assemblers putting the oil filter on too tight on initial install. Thanks for the tip on what Oil Filter tool to use. My oil filter "strap" was too big, and getting a bottom "Cap" style likely would have stripped if I attempted to buy/use one. Found the oil filter tool you showed on on the Video on Amazon for approx $8. You need a tool that tightens around the filter as you attempt to unscrew the filter. Going slow the filter started to loosen on the 1st attempt without distorting the oil filter. Thanks again for the tip. I am sure it save me a bit of hassle (and aggravation). Happy Travels....

I am a new RV owner and this is the exact generator I have. I did not have a clue how to do this and you have shown me way more than the dealer did about this generator. I didn't even know it has circuit breakers or that you could start it right on the generator! Thank you so much for putting this on youtube. I am off to change my oil now. Oh by the way, my book said change it after the first 50 hours and then every 150 or annually after that. So I blew past the 50 hours by almost 40 but I don't think that will make a big difference I hope! I guess if there are no iron filings I should be good to go. Thanks again for this video!

Good luck, they are tough to get off the first time. We wrapped some rubber from a bicycle inner tube around the exposed part of the filter, then put the filter wrench over that. Grabbed the wrench as tight as we could, followed by a couple of choice words and it came off. Be careful near that shielding, it will cut skin easily...ask me how I know! LOL

Good video. However I found if I fill our 5500 up to the full mark after about an hour (give or take 15-30 minutes) the unit "stammers" and shuts down. I found a video where an engineer type (had the same problem) was looking at the dipstick. Determined that it was designed wrong. He lowered the level the "add" mark and the problem went away. I've since lowered our oil level and the unit has run just as it should.

Hi Carl! The filter isn't that bad after the first time you take it off. My biggest problem with the 4000 we had on the Class C was the start button was too close to where you put the oil in and occasionally my hand would bump it while filling and that made quite the mess. LOL

Extremely informative and helpful video! I do have a question; ' the front cover (on the ONAN) states that the oil capacity is "2 qts. with oil filter". However, it appears that you used almost 2 1/2 quarts if you included the oil poured into the filter.' I'm sorta confused on that issue. Should I purchase 3 quarts for my impending oil change?? Thanks for taking your time to illustrate to us, the steps to do this oil service.

I have a question. I noticed you use 15w40 diesel oil. I thought about that too. I don't understand Onan, I think they went with15w40 so we would need to buy their oil. I was thinking of using Mobil1 10w40. We already know Onan doesn't recommend synthetic oil, only because they say it isn't necessary. We know that synthetic is far superior to regular motor oil. 40 weight oil is 40 weight oil. When it come to temperature synthetic can take higher temps, better shear strength, it neutralizes acids better and the list goes on and on. The 15w40 doesn't meet all the specs I found online. It says API class SJ, SH or SG and can be USED WITH CH-4 CG-4 or CF-4 so it would be like SJ/CH-4. How many years has that oil worked for you?

We used that oil ever since we bought the RV in 2016. No Issues.

I figured it out....was a spiders nest up in the rubber tube...had to shove a screwdriver up there!

Hi, Sorry I didn't get back to you, we were gone all day. Glad you figured it out. I would not have guessed a spider's nest. Thanks for sharing that for others who might run into the same problem. Hope the rest of the oil change went well. 😀

@@GetGonewithUS it did and thank you so much. It was either a spiders nest or a hornet because as soon as I jammed a screwdriver up that rubber drain tube - there was definitely something there and then suddenly oil poured out! Thanks again 👍

I found mental to mental slipped. I cut coating off of a 10/3 wire I slide that over the 3 tabs worked good. You were right about filter being put on tightly. Thanks.. This week is oil change on the new 7.3L V-8. Great video's.

@@eddd7361 Nice hack using the 10/3 wire coating, I may end up using that idea myself. Good luck on the 7.3L oil change. I haven't done an oil change on the engine or even seen that engine yet. I can't imagine it's much, if any, different from any other oil change. Good luck!

I’m going to order the oil filter wrench remover tool that you listed, but what is the ratchet thing , and is there an extension that I need as well , and are they specific sizes? Sorry , I don’t know these things and I don’t have a bunch of tools. Thanks so much for your video!
@GetGonewithUS

You are welcome Tina. We used a 3/8" ratchet with a small extension. That is what the Oil Filter remover tool is mounted to. You should be able to pick it up at Home Depot or Walmart. Good luck!

I have the 4000Q so no oil filter for me. I switched to the Rotella oil last year from Castrol. I like that drain plug I don't have that. I exercise my generator every 2 to 3 weeks with load for about an hour. Have you ever tried the SeaFoam hot soak to clean the carb? I do that also every spring. Always great videos, Lou.

Hi Lou! We had the 4000 in our Class C and I agree with you, the drain plug is a lot easier. I haven't tried the sea foam, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the tip. 😃

@@GetGonewithUS Oh that's right I forgot you had the Class C before Maggie. I did a video on it following Seafoam recommendations. It is listed on my channel as generator maintenance and exercising. I think it seems to help. These Onan generators are famous for getting the carbs clogged.
