Күн бұрын

Adam "Nolly" Getgood shows his process for creating a kick drum sample track in this tutorial. He uses Logic Pro X, but you should be able to adapt the process to any DAW and stock plugins.
He touches on:
- Choosing which acoustic kick track to use as the basis for your sample track
- Pre-processing the acoustic track with SPL Transient Designer and Fabfilter Pro G
- Converting the acoustic track into a MIDI track that will trigger the kick drum sample
- Manually adjusting the timing and velocity of the MIDI notes
- Adding an instance of the Getgood Drums Matt Halpern signature library
- Checking for phase alignment and other issues
- Printing an audio track of the final kick drum samples which can then be blended in with the acoustic drums
Get Modern & Massive: getgooddrums.com

-Cymbal and snare bleed matrix
-Nine snares, six kicks, fourteen toms and ten cymbals from a range of drum manufacturers

Great tutorial. I follow a similar process but instead of converting to midi I run through APTrigga 3 with my samples loaded up. Using the transient and gate is one thing that a lot of people miss in this process but I have never actually seen anyone else do it. I will convert to midi if I need to trigger more than one channel of samples as APTrigga is monophonic only

Does anyone know what the Selection Based Processing and Drum Dubling tools are called on Reaper? Also, is it possible to move a MIDI note on Reaper like on 13:41? BTW, awesome video! Nolly rules!

in reaper, right click the media item and go to take, then click show take fx! if you want it to be baked in like in this example you will have to render the track i think. don't know the midi function, i use slate trigger so someone else will have to chime in

You can use the JS drum to trigger function. You will also need to view the threshold under “view” in the menu. There is a good video on KZbin about it if you search for it.

Hey Nolly, I've tried the spl td with full attack no sustain into the gate but unfortunately the bleed from the other kit pieces also turn into blips before the gate so I tried the gate first and then the td processing and the blips are all accurate hits. So the signal chain order may vary depending on how bad the bleed is yeah?

I remember you saying in videos you aren’t the biggest fan to use samples in mixes. Has that changed any?
@lukebogartmix
@lukebogartmix 5 жыл бұрын
If you have enough control over the session, and good enough equipment, you should keep sample augmentation to a minimum, assuming your drummer can also play to the expectations. However, if you're getting tracks to mix, where things might not be what YOU want, then that's where sample replacement comes in.
@AscentToZenith
@AscentToZenith 5 жыл бұрын
@@lukebogartmix I feel like that is just personal preference. Some people go for that super modern production sound in metal. I mean yeah you'd definitely want the best starting sound you could get either way though.
@lukebogartmix
@lukebogartmix 5 жыл бұрын
@@AscentToZenith Yeah it is personal preference completely (though the approximate preference of Nolly to answer your initial question) To me, getting that super modern sound, is completely possible without samples, or heavy use of samples. Good tuning, decent microphones, and a hard-hitting, consistent drummer.
@adamnollygetgood5545

I suppose I've become less particular in that regard - depending on the client's desired results and the drum tracks/performances I'm mixing, I'm happy to use as much or as little sample as necessary, or none at all.

Damn, in Cubase it takes forever to replace the drums because every other hit gets misplaced so you have to drag bunch of them around manually. Literally the worst part of the job for me.

@marc-andrebeaudet6040

no matter if it's Slate trigger or drumagog, all of those create mis-triggers and some samples that are offset to the transient. You still need to manually go check that each one is on the transient after printing your track. Unless you're lazy and don't want to make it perfect like it should be. I like printing it to midi to be able to tweak velocities; then i run that through SSD
