I think it's the most useful video I've seen to improve jumping. It really makes sense and analyzes all the aspecs that matter. Thanks a lot for all the effort and advices. I will try to apply everything on the water. The problem is that I live in a very choppy spot and it is so difficult to keep the edge. You give some advice for choppy conditions towards the end of the video, but it would be so helpful if you could please devolop further on this issue, since I have not found any video that specifically tackles the problem of jumping in choppy conditions.

@@gethighwithmikeok so it’s been 2 months and I think I’m having a lot of success. My average height for jumps has gone from 7m to almost getting 10m on each session even when I don’t feel “well powered”. Looking at the breakdown of my jumps, I’m going between 30kph and 35ish on my jumps. But my edge angle is around 55 degrees so I really need to get to work on my ankles! This is only when the waves are good! I really struggle in the chop! The back of my legs are always catching on the water!! Anyway. Long story short. Thanks for improving my jumps!! ❤

First of all, great video, thank you so much for making it! The first question that pops up - how not to lose the edging while sending the kite to 12 just before taking off
@gethighwithmike
@gethighwithmike Жыл бұрын
Great question! That's where your carve comes in. I like to think of the carve as 'a mechanism for fighting the kite until the kite is at 12 o'clock'. A lot of people think they're carving, but just like edging, it isn't black and white. The timing is everything. You want your carve to be IN-SYNC with the kite movement. START the carve as soon as you start the send. And for every degree that your kite goes up, you want to increase that carving angle. When you get them in sync, you're gonna get that kite to 12 at lift-off (with high speed and tight lines) and go massive I'll cover in-depth in another video.

I only took 2 lessons at 3 hours each and afterwards bought all my gear and have been learning from friends and KZbin videos and watching this video again has revealed alot more that I didn't understand to begin with! Thanks for the great content!

I edge like a mofo both heel and toeside, because that's all I do - and power loop carving. Sometimes I put the wingtip of my kite in the water. But I've designed and built special boards that allow for waaay more control. Most kiters don't fly their kites low enough. Great video btw.

Mike, with this video, you turned my overpriced low wind kite holiday into an awesome time. I had to watch it several times to get to grips with the subtleties, and i probably still have loads of work to do, but i started off with endless walks of shame and within a day, upwinding better than the kid i was insanely jelous of the day before. Not had much oportunity to test it with big jumps yet, but i imagine it will have a nice impact on those too. If only i could afford your luxury sessions, i imagine the progress would be out of this world. Still, I'll take these videos for now. Thanks for takimg the time to share your knowledge.

This video helped me get a better understanding of the ideal bar positioning for jumping. As I understand it the goal should be riding at the appropriate speed with the bar about halfway in. Then, as the kite is sent to twelve the bar should be sheeted out. This helps maintain roughly constant power since the send puts the kite deeper in the power zone, and the sheet-out compensates, thus letting the rider maintain a roughly constant body/edge angle. Then the bar is pulled all the way in at takeoff. This means that the bar ends up pulled in more than it was when riding, which together with the kite being deep in the power zone makes for a massive pull - much more than when riding. Most jumping tutorials talk about pulling the bar in to jump, but never explain how/when the bar ends up out. I've seen lots of confusion around this, from me and others. The discussion around using the depower strap appropriately seems really valuable.

Great video mike. Super clear and analytical. I'd love more info on what to do in chop (like at the end of this video). Most places I kite (SF bay area) are always choppy and I don't know how to approach the jump well. In 18-20 kts on an 11m I'd think I should be able to do 8-9m jumps pretty consistently, but its almost always 5.5-7m for me. I'm doing something wrong and I think its the edging with the chop. I guess the question is how to get locked in and set up a jump in those conditions. Thanks again!
@gethighwithmike
@gethighwithmike Жыл бұрын
It's a tough one, right?! For starters, I suggest focusing on actively pressing your heels into the pads and driving the force into your harness. If you aren't actively doing these 2 things, those lines won't be tight. Next, you've got to pick your take off point carefully. So you've got to keep your eyes peeled for the trough in the chop. That's where you will initiate your carve.
@Dawesdog
@Dawesdog Жыл бұрын
@@gethighwithmike OK thanks Mike. makes sense. I have a hard time keeping my edge with the waves coming sideways and then doing all the timing stuff on top of that (edge,send kite, sheet out, last push, sheet in, etc). I think you are right that focusing on heels (and toes) is a good start

Top video 👍🏾👍🏾 Could you also provide some strategies to edge in chop/wave conditions? Many thanks!

Damn! So many good points. For example to trim your frontlines so that the sweetspot is in good reach. It makes so much sense, so the kite can fly easier to the edge of the windwindow! Silly me thought i wouldn’t jump higher, when pulling the adjuster a bit👀 Still scared of doing rotations after a kiteloop over 10m🤓

Thanks Niklas! I used to think the same :D We don't need to know how the kite works in order to use it! But it certainly helps us unlock new levels when we question things BTW, are you doing kiteloop late backs yet?
