Sebastian Bach has what is probably the most perfect and accurate vocal placement of any rock singer in history. His vowels are absolutely perfect and he focuses them "front" right where they should be focused. He sounds like he has had operatic vocal training.

Bach studied with well-known vocal coach Don Lawrence in NYC. Lawrence has worked with many pop singers, teaching them to use classical operatic techniques in their singing.

I used to hate his version of this song but I’ve really come to appreciate it for what it is. The way he changes his timbre a lot makes it seem like the thoughts of someone in a lot of turmoil and conflicting emotions. The way he vocalizes the lyrics toward the end of the backbeat or bar evinces that it’s a stream of consciousness rant - which, knowing this scene of the agony in the garden in the Bible isn’t far from the source). And he’s interpreting Jesus as a different kind of rockstar than most productions, a late 80s to early 90s metal that was all but wiped out when grunge changed the genre in the 90s.

I only want to say If there is a way Take this cup away from me For I don't want to taste its poison Feel it burn me I have changed I'm not as sure, as when we started Then, I was inspired Now, I'm sad and tired Listen, surely I've exceeded expectations Tried for three years, seems like thirty Could you ask as much from any other man? But if I die See the saga through and do the things you ask of me, Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God Want to see, I'd want to see, my God Want to see, I'd want to see, my God Why I should die Would I be more noticed than I ever was before? Would the things I've said and done matter any more? I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord If I die what will be my reward? If I die what will be my reward? Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Why should I die? Oh why should I die? Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain? Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain Show me there's a reason for your wanting me to die You're far to keen and where and how, but not so hot on why Alright, I'll die! Just watch me die! See how I die! Then I was inspired Now, I'm sad and tired After all, I've tried for three years, seems like ninety Why then am I scared to finish what I started What you started, I didn't start it God, thy will is hard But you hold every card I will drink your cup of poison Nail me to your cross and break me Bleed me, beat me Kill me Take me, now! Before I change my mind

John Doe Exactly my point. If a vocalist is past their prime at age 34 something is very wrong. That said, his voice is still solid here, but the high screams are clearly out of his clean range. Not sure he could’ve hit those notes cleanly within a live show even back in 1991. Of course, Ian Gillian and Ted Neeley were vocal freaks.

Sebastian has an amazing voice. He definitely has the chops for this role and this song. But I feel like he can't quite get the timing and the beat right. It doesnt flow quite like it should. I don't think either is doing the other justice. I am a diehard JCS fan and have been since I was tiny and honestly when I found out he was cast as JC, I was very excited. The role requires a real primal, rock n roll SCREAM and no one can do that better than Sebastian. Plus, as is very evident here, he really does have an amazing voice and vibratto. Why he switches back and forth bewteen voices so much is a mystery to me and I wonder why the director went in that direction. I salute him for doing something new but I was just not impressed with this. Sorry, Sebastian. This is a TOUGH role.

I did a set of JCS with a Judas singer like him, or at least in the screaming bits, totally amazing portrayal, the most emotional one I have seen as of yet. It still haunts me that I didn't get it all on tape (the time I was planning on filming we had to cancel as our Jesus was an actual priest and had to assist after a school bus crash. Anticlimactic and extremely tragic. Since then we haven't done it again. And yes, I answered a four month old post for this

ewww, I like Sebastian Bach but he does this alot live, it's as if he can't decide on which direction he's going to take the voice so just changes all the time and makes it sound like he's just taking the piss. The way he sung the beginning out of time like that went on for too long to the point I was wondering does he realize he's out. Those high screeches were just a crackling mess. The parts where he used full clean voice and let his vibrato out were brilliant, why did he not use it more.

Sebastian Bach has a great voice for the type of music Skid Row did. But his problem with this one is that it’s impossible to get a sense of Jesus behind his singing. Sounds more like too devilish and only flames, instead of desperation and honest despair intertwined with calmness and dignity of the spirit. My thumbs up for the Skid Row tunes, but not for this one.

I hate when arrangements are written with the singer seeming to be 'behind' the melody. Not enjoying this version.

@@Itseme3 Ok, John Legend had his problems, but at least he knew not to go for notes that he couldn't hit. Nothing he did was remotely as bad as Bach's attempt at the "why"

The best version of all times, Sebastian Bach Rocks!!

I have to agree with Erin on this one. Bach is a phenomenal vocalist; however, at least in this version, it's like he's singing it for the first time, only after having heard it a few times. He's struggling in this key. It's too low for him. Worst of all is his timing, an utter disaster. There's no flow and you can't even tap your foot to him. I can see how, with some practice, Sebastian could eventually pull this off in later performances.

This sucks. Even on 80's washup standards. Steve Balsamo's rendition "rocks" harder than this. Sebastian has a wonderful vibrato, so why doesn't he use it on the lowest & highest notes, rather than screech & growl?

He's dragging at the end of each phrase and spilling into the next one. His voice is fine, but the way he's timing the lyrics - no. Too much free license.

more of a Judas id say. great rock voice and would suit being in the show just not as Jesus. Voice is far too hard for a man who is on the brink of begging through tears to his farther for mercy to allow him to live. However a definate candidate for Judas. Absolutely would cast him as Judas.
