The great thing about Sci fi movies from back in the 80s and 70s is that most of those "gross" alien like scenes were physically created compared to the hyper advanced cgi today. But even though they didn't make them using superior tech back then, its far more engaging and visceral compared to what they produce nowadays. Somehow our human brains don't seem to "accept" fake / computer generated material but we do react very emphatically to physical effects.

This movie has some of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger noises ever!🤣🤣 Also Achara my have actually changed my mind on how this movie really ends. For a long time I believed that it really was a dream, both from how it ends with the bright light at the end and then how ridiculously over the top the violence is. But then Achara (the eagle eye that she is) points out how everyone around Arnold is very sus around him before he even goes to Recall.
@goldenageofdinosaurs71922 жыл бұрын
The recall dream could include that time at home though. It could basically cover the entire time we watch the film, or the ‘film’ in Arnold’s head (I’ve spent far too much time thinking about this, lol).
@thedarkknight22212 жыл бұрын
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 yeah but that would be completely irresponsible writing. Because that means Recall made him actually go to Recall in his head. @@thedarkknight2221 It would totally fit the Secret Agent program. If it would’ve been a ‘Rock Star’ program, then they wouldn’t have done it. The line that really gets me is when the assistant says, ‘Blue skies on mars,’ or something like that. The chances of a blue sky on mars, for the 1st time in tens of millions of years, being part of his ‘Ego Trip,’ but then happening in reality, all in the space of a couple days, would be astronomical.
@thedarkknight22212 жыл бұрын
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 it would, but that’s if it was human tech, it was alien tech which works on a level we can’t comprehend.
@castlew41622 жыл бұрын
"Blue Sky On Mars" was the fictional program/story for his ego trip that then became true in a few days on the actual Mars - you'd say that would be improbable. However, Cohaagen had prepared things on Earth for Hauser as the Quaid persona to play out so he would be chased to Mars, believed by Melina and Kuato, leading him to Kuato. The question is was Recall a part of his plan and given the "Blue Sky On Mars" program for Quaid to get - just not as early as what occurred. Cohaagen wanted this all to occur after a little more time for him to set things up, but you see him "recalculate" the plan when informed that Quaid was on the run. Kuato was psychic and the extent of his abilities were not known. Cohaagen's previous attempts were thwarted, so he decided not to inform anyone else yet and then only when they needed to know to limit the chances that Kuato would psychically find out any part of the scheme. When things started happening earlier than planned, you got agents really trying to kiil him because they were not informed; and also Richter was a little out-of-control. Then again it could all be impanted memories. He only thinks he dreamed of Melina and Mars before going to Recall.

YES!!! THIS IS AN EPIC SCI-FI ACTION ADVENTURE FILM! Before Schwarzenegger was cast, Matthew Broderick, Richard Dreyfuss, James Caan, Patrick Swayze, Christopher Reeve and Richard Gere were considered for the lead. The film was the only movie to win Best Visual Effects at the 1991 Academy Awards. The film is the last Hollywood movie to have in camera special effects shots, which consists of Miniatures, Matte paintings, blue screen and rear screen projection. The film was a box office success making $270 million dollars against a $90 million dollar budget, making is the most expensive independent film produced. David Cronenberg was going to direct the film, but had a falling out with Dino De Laurentiis and production was cancelled until the script was on picked up by Carolco.

It's great to see two reviewers who "get it". "What makes reality real" was one of Philip K Dick's recurring themes, along with "what makes human human", and "what makes you you", as seen in "Blade Runner", "Screamers", and "Impostor". "Paycheck" is interesting as it was based on a very early work by Dick, before he settled on his recurring themes, and should also be worth a look too.

The movie is based on PKD's "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale". Other movies based on his novels, aside from "Blade Runner" ("Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" as you already know), are "Minority Report", "Screamers" (directed by Christian Duguay, with Peter Weller -Robocop-) or "The Adjustment Bureau" (with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt). "The Matrix" is actually based on (ripped-off) the comic series "The Invisibles" (by Grant Morrison). You may be interested in watching a different type of "scifi" movie like "The Man from Earth", based on a novel by Jerome Bixby, who also wrote "Fantastic Voyage".

There was another subject you touched upon during the discussion, and regarding that I would like to recommend the 2009 film "Moon", as well. Glass can block much of the radiation. In the movie "Oppenheimer", one scientist witnessing the first atomic bomb explosion simply sits in his car, indicating to his fellows that the front window will give him enough protection. Also glass can be treated to be even more effective. The bigger problem seems to be that if the glass is compromised in any way, the pressure difference with the outside can be deadly. This can be seen as the corporations setting up the place cutting costs.

Is what is happening to Quaid just a fantasy taking place in his head while he is strapped in a chair at Rekall? I was long resistant to the idea myself. But over the years, I've become persuaded that this is almost certainly the case. Even so, the film is sufficiently ambiguous that people can argue back-and-forth about it and never resolve the question absolutely.
@yasminesteinbauer85652 жыл бұрын
Since there are many scenes in the film where Quaid is not even present, the events must be real. If everything were only a memory implant, nothing should take place of which he can have no knowledge. But we see again and again e.g. conversations between Richter and Cohaagen etc.

@@robbob5302 It doesn't matter. Quaid was unconscious when she said that implantation had not yet taken place. It would be implausible for him to have a memory of a time when he was unconscious. If they had implanted such a memory, it would be more than obvious to Quaid that it was a memory implant. The only logical explanation for the viewer being able to see more than Quaid is that the events actually took place.

The early "cheap" domes did not provide adequate protection against the hazards to humans, and thus you got mutants. That was at the "old town" facilities. The new facilities have newer (and more expensive) protection that takes care of everything(think atomic/radiation facility translucent panes - not only one layer of regular glass). The more unrealistic aspect is that security forces have weapons that can rather easily penatrate the materials used between the habitation space and the atmosphere of Mars. The current strategy for a facility on Mars is to build it in a lava tube with the Mars ground providing some of the protection(they did have a lot of stuff in tunnels). You have to admit they got a lot of things correct considering it was made in the late 1980's - with only the Viking landers and before Pathfinder(1997) and the other probes including orbiters that have mapped Mars surface and sub-surface. Also, in a fast-paced action movie you can have a few things purposely unrealistic such as the interactive video call from Mars to Earth without any noticable lag/time-delay("speed of light" transmission - not quantum communication). Leave that for "The Martian" or "2001: A Space Oddessy" kind of movie to portray.
