Im 67 now. I bought the cassette when it first came out and first played it on a boom box in my backyard. My kids were playing in the yard. I hit the stop button FAST...and listened later that day to every song to my delight. And I met Bushwick Bill at the hotel he was at in SF one time. This song flows in me like my own blood. The scratchy record sound is my opium.

This song came out when I was around 10 years old and I use to let the tape rock until the tape popped. It was only in my adult years after almost being killed on multiple occasions, going to prison, witnessing people being murdered that I understand this is a song about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which I suffer from. The Paranoia, the night terrors, the distrust, the hyper arousal. This song stirs a lot of emotions and brings me back to some disturbing times. Well that is enough binging for one night. Thanks for the reactions. Appreciate it.

That hospital album cover you had up in the background of the lyrics was not staged by the way. Bushwick Bill shot himself in the eye after an argument with his girlfriend and their management used the opportunity to take that infamous pic... So they definitely knew what they were talking about when it comes to mental health issues. Back then it was a much more taboo topic in the hip hop community than it is now.
@ABoomerReacts

I'm frankly surprised that artists nowadays are talking openly about their struggles and putting it in their lyrics. I just think of rap artists as the last ones to show vulnerability.
@uamini
@uamini 2 жыл бұрын
@@ABoomerReacts Well the concept of masculinity has greatly shifted over the years so it's much more fashionable these days to address your weaknesses. Early 90's rappers tended to treat mental health issues the way The Geto Boys did here, as something you'd fight your way out of. But even that era had its share of introspective rappers who weren't scared to talk about their insecurities, artists like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Organized Konfusion, etc..

Wow. Two of my favorites in one week with this and TROY. The sample is from an Isaac Hayes song. I forget which one. Scarface wrote Bill's verse. Since it was initially supposed to just be Face on the song, I assume when Bill says "that's the creep I be seein' in my sleep" it's the same "person" that Scarface sees "when I'm deep in the covers" in the first verse. You can see where the first, third, and fourth verses were all written as one story, showing the descent into madness of the same character. Another great Geto Boys song is "Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta", but if you've seen the movie Office Space you've heard it already.

@@ABoomerReacts This is one of the very FEW and I mean FEW times, where a radio version actually made for a good and fluent track that took nothing away from it. They recorded a whole other clean version themselves so it wouldn't get chopped up with DJ scratches; bleeps, audio cuts, etc. They replaced the cuss words with whole other words that actually blended in with the track really well. Whether it's better or not is of course up to preference, but it definitely isn't any worse of a track to hear on the radio. Very rare, especially for hip hop.

@HarryWilmington
@HarryWilmington 2 жыл бұрын
@@ABoomerReacts Many rappers in the 90s would actually record both clean and explicit versions of their albums. I grew up in a house where Mom only allowed us to by clean version of rap records. Busta Rhymes (who, btw, would also be a good consideration for song reviews) re-recorded every single song over. Also, sometimes the edited versions would be better. For example, in my opinion the edited version of Tupac's "To Live & Die In LA" sounds much better; and his songs "I Ain't Mad At Cha'" and "How Do You Want It" both have third verses in the clean version that differ from the album versions.

@ericr1129 2 жыл бұрын
@@ABoomerReacts Yeah maybe. I initially believe only the first two verses were about paranoia from living the street life. The third verse is more about the character being depressed about his current life. He talked about praying to the Lord for forgiveness for living a bad(maybe street) life, constantly battling suicidal thoughts, and doubting/not being able to truly appreciate his female partner who actually loves him. The last verse focuses more on the literal definition of mind playing tricks. I initially thought it was the character hallucinating due to drugs, but it could be just a mental disorder like schizophrenia as @TheRealness408 mentioned. So neither directly mentioned being paranoid that someone was after them.

Hey boomer. Scarface is my favorite rapper of all time. He kinda paved the way for rappers talking about mental illness. No one really has ever came close to him. He was also DMX favorite rapper. Interesting facts. Scarface actually lived in a mental institution from the ages of 9-11 years old. His first love was not hip hop, it was metal. He wanted to be in a rock band as a child an when he originally got into rap he started out as a DJ. He plays multiple instruments an produced most of his own songs. In the early 90s him walking with a cane was not 100% cause of image. He was caught in the middle of a shootout an got hit by a stray bullet in the leg an had to use a cane for a while. One of his best friends was killed by a police officer in that shootout. I read all this in his autobiography “the diary of a madman” excellent book. He’s in my opinion the best storyteller in the history of hip hop.

@@ABoomerReacts no problem. Yeah face is crazy deep. Being a hardcore fan I didn’t even realize he was constantly referencing his childhood in his songs. Till I read his autobiography. I heard songs by him where he tells stories about being in straight jackets an being sent to mental institutions an breaking out of them. I didn’t know he actually lived in an insane asylum. I just thought they were dope stories. Other songs he’s constantly dropping bars about looking into the eyes of people that died. Like that one bar on the geto boys song he said “all I seen was him layed out choking, eyes rolling into the back of head wide open”. That’s a consistent theme with him. “I seen the man die with his eyes open” “Always look a man in his eye before you kill him”I thought that was just Ill bars till I read his book an he talks about seeing a man dead in the streets when he was a kid an the blank look in the man’s eyes really disturbed an haunted him for years. Brought a whole new level of understanding to what was already my favorite rapper. Man music is a whole other world. I don’t think I’ll ever get enough.

3:41 Most-likely these teenagers have some sort of connection to the company producing the album. Many of these incidents are orchestrated. Same with the incidents in Tupac's life designed to promote his music. Also, if these children were subjects of MK Ultra/Project Monarch programming then the song may have been a trigger for them to act.
