I was in 8th grade and heard this song, In the Light, and Kashmir on the radio. They were from the same album and I went to the record store to buy it with my allowance. When I got there, I found out that it was a double album and I didn't have enough to buy it. I went home so disappointed. But I was there the following week when the store opened. One of the best albums ever!

This song is filled with lush instrumentation. Jimmy orchestrated 14 tracks worth of guitars to come up with this masterpiece; meticulously layering and overdubbing until perfect. In an interview, when asked what gambles Robert had taken in his life/career, he told the story of this song and said before joining Zep, a former girlfriend, whom he loved dearly, (widely believed to be Shirley Wilson, his wife's sister) gave him the ultimatum of being with her or continuing music. Obviously he gambled on music. When played live, Jonesy would play a triple-necked guitar that had a mandolin at the top, 12-string in the middle, then 6-string while playing bass pedals with his feet. When all that proved to be too cumbersome, they dropped it from the set. It would get brought back near the end of their days, notably at Knebworth where Jimmy played it using a guitar fit with B-bender.

I love to see people who haven't heard a piece of music before, and are open enough to at least give it a chance, and then enjoy it. I don't care if your black, white, pink, purple, or green, young, or old whatever. Music offers a wide expanse of possibilities, and granted you're not gonna like everything out there, but at least give other stuff outside your comfort zone a chance, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Listening to the studio version is always best to do just as we did when it first came out. The only way we got to experience them live is by either going to one of their concerts, the double live album, or crappy bootlegs. I'm sure they'll get to their live music before it's all said and done :)
