Hello Nicole [ Nicole Maria Sings ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you (and Charlie) for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). Nice reaction, pity about the sound. Subbed for more Nightwish ❤ That Buenos Aires 2012 performance Charlie was talking about is more emotional for me, because it was the first time I was 100% sure that they had found the best possible singer after Anette. Floor had been 2 months in the band. That ending note there has so much power...and the video captured everything perfectly. And the Argentine audience is just amazing (Floor, Floor, Floor chants at the end, singing along with Emppu's solo etc). Performance itself is not better, just different and more raw I think.

Hearing a more double bass Jukka heavy version of this actually gave me a smile and gave me a bit symphonic thrash metal vibes. As a 50 yr old Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Metallica fan, it gave me the jig 4 live vibes. Like having Dave Lombardo drumming for Nightwish. Imagine that. As a Nightwish fan, I've heard this live version maybe a few hundred, if not thousands of times. Your (and Charlie's) reaction and analysis is what kept me here. Well done!

Watching all the joy and excitement, Nicole, was incredible. The "Jesus Christ" at the climax was epic. Ghost Love Score is the opening/gateway for many to the rabbit hole of Nightwish. Tuomas, Floor, Emppu, Jukka (both drummer and bass player) Marco (is a past member), Kai, Troy and the past members, it was like the universe aligned perfectly for all of them and us. They are all perfect in their roles and at their craft. I beseech you, fall down the rabbit hole and discover one of the greatest groups to grace existence.

I discovered Nightwish about 10 months ago with this very live performance of Ghost Love Score. I listen to this multiple times a week, sometimes multiple times a day and I usually end up watching a few reaction videos every week on top of that. I don’t think I can ever get tired of this song. But about Floor's performance. I love her control over vibrato. She knows exactly when to use it, and when to keep the note clean, just modulating the tail of the note. Too many singers don't use vibrato as a subtle musical tool, they just overlay it on every note from start to finish. Singers need to study Floor.

Agreed. Vibrato can we used as a tool. In the opera world it is supposed to be on every not but for those who can control it are steps ahead of everyone else!

@@NicoleMariaSings I have heard opera singers use vibrato this way, and it actually enhanced the performance hugely. Maybe it is time for singers to step forward and use vibrato more selectively. I know there will be a great deal of harrumphing from the old guard, but opera has changed a lot over the years and I think this would be a wonderful next step. Vowel modification has already been reduced greatly, making the words much more understandable.

As someone who has zero musical training I always love when professionals can share insights to how music is made and make me appreciate the music I love even more. One thing Charlie got wrong is this song was originally written for and performed by their first singer Tarja Turunen. As Charlie mentioned shortly after Floor joined the band in the middle of this tour she started experimenting with the ending of the song during rehearsals. The guys liked her changes and encouraged her to perform it that way on stage. So "The Note" is her contribution. Tarja is a fantastic singer and their are many Nightwish songs I love her singing in but Ghost Love Score isn't one of them. IMHO Floor's version is lights out better. So for your next Nightwish song you should get Charlie to show you Your's is an Empty Hope live from Wembley. You'll get to hear another side of Floor's voice which further demonstrates her versatility. The bassist Marko Hietala also sings in that song and pay special attention to the chorus and figure out who is singing what to have your mind blown. Our checkout the song Shoemaker to get some of Floor's full on Opera singing. Since you obviously love Symphonic Metal (as do I) get Charlie to show you some other bands from the genre. First and foremost would be the Dutch band Epica and their beautiful soprano Simone Simons. I would start with Unleashed live from their 10th anniversary Retrospect show where the had a full orchestra and choir on stage with them. Just watched the livestream of their Symphonic Synergy concert from Amsterdam last month where they again had a choir and orchestra on stage with them. Other Symphonic Metal bands to checkout would be Blackbriar, Within Temptation, Visions of Atlantis, Delain, or Seven Spires. A great song and performer to checkout would be Diane van Giersbergen's song A Symphonic Tragedy. Dianne has many years in the Symphonic Metal world (ex Exit Eden, ex Xandria) and is a full on legit Spinto Soprano. Recently has been releasing a number of solo songs. This WAS originally a Tarja Turunen song. The best Tarja performance of it was on the End of an Era DVD (2005) at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki. Floor added the now famous Floorgasmic ending.

first, thanks for reacting, guys......I'm a newbie to classical/operatic performance and appreciate the comments of pros.......it is obvious that Floor has classical vocal training ( isn't there a hint of the "Carmina Burana" in several places here ? )........big props to the orchestra, the band and the choir for adding to Floor's performance.......this is a difficult arrangement and score to perform, so many key/tempo changes !

Good to see Charlie introducing yet more singers to the magnificence of Nightwish and Floor Jansen. Just a word about the audio. I assume that you are hearing it well through your earphones, however, on the post, it sounds very tinny and also seems to be running a little fast. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’. Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’ Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on KZbin. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered KZbin in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her.
