Just doing my " due diligence", totaling up the BIY route, the cart cost me 1k complete but the shocker was how much the Health Dept requires in permits & health safety certificate fees. $ Fed EIN-Free $ State EIN- Free $ Insurance (required) $ Seller Permit $ Business License $ DBA Fee $ Food Mnger Certification $ Retailer Food seller $ Food Cart Inspection $ Fire Marshall Inspection $ Trailer registration & license $ Valid Drivers License $ Notary Fees Just a little bit of reality here to the tune of $750 + before you hit the streets! They really get their slice of pie!

Third day into binge watching your vids. Small town, hotdog desert. Talked to the local Restaurants and Pubs. Let them know I wasn't going to compete with their menus, but would refer any of the non not hotdog eating public to their establishments. Never let anybody know what my menu was. Just let them know I wasn't competing with them and my business would enhance their business. EVERYONE supported my idea. Talked to the Chamber of Commerce, they loved it! Went to city hall and they loved it, despite their hatred of street vendors. They don't even know my menu! Street vendors last a day or two in my area of operations, then they're run out. My uniformed advice is it to fit into and help enhance the local economy and you will thrive! My area is in a land of Mr. Hannys'. Green Acres fame. They were even allowing me a business license and permit before I even told them what my future business was. LMAO THX Ben!!!

I searched my county website in North Carolina as you suggested and found this. "The first and most important requirement for any mobile food unit or push cart is that it must be operated in conjunction with a permitted restaurant, food stand or commissary, and shall report at least daily to that restaurant or commissary for supplies, cleaning and servicing. The county in which the restaurant or commissary is located will issue the permit for the mobile food unit or push cart."

my god I paused this at 3 mins 55 secs to say THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!! im trying to do this FOR REAL.. but as a low income worker whose dealt with so Manny ups and downs.. and my life savings is on the line at 42 yrs old..(which honestly and sadly is very small)..I have cooked in more kitchens then I wish to say and even went to culinary school but meet my sons mom there.. yadda yadda ... so. Depends. To rent just the cart you would be the same as renting your lawnmower to someone. Unless you rent it and advertise it as a licensed cart. see: www.learnhotdogs.com/expand for tons more.

Do you still need a commercial kitchen if you go the route of adding the word catering to your business name? Will the health department allow you to cater from home, without a commissary?

Depends on your state rules. Just adding "catering" doesn't eliminate the requirements for regular vending. See LearnHotDogs.com for free training on that.

You will need to get a state food permit first which is a license to sell it. Then get your cart and things to start with. Its most important you know the laws regulations in your state about food sales.

you said its easy in Florida but they are giving me hell they said I need a Commissary Notification filled out but I can't get anyone with a prepared food licenses to sign it so they won't let me finish my application till that is done I've been to restaurants, churches and I can't get anyone to help. And they said they don't send people to inspect your cart untill you finish your application so now I have spent $2,700 on a business that I am at a dead end on? I'm sorry if I sound so mean I am just frustrated from trying for so long and getting nowhere.

Hey Ben I know y'all are from down south we were as well until about 14yrs ago ive been watching a BUNCH of your videos very helpful but... any chance you can start doing some more videos on up north ish say New England ( NH area) I'm not lazy I'm trying to do all the legwork and research I can but some helpful advice for this area would be greatly appreciated for folks up in this region thanks

Georgia is the hardest. You need a base of operation on same owner no share. Same title. It is very hard to get it. I have an ice cream truck and they tell me I need a base of operation cuz I sell shaved ice and soft ice cream. Base of operations are rented out in Georgia “prep” and it costs $500 min a month. Why do I have to pay $500 for something I dont need. It is very stupid.
