Getting across the SALOUM DELTA in Senegal is not as easy as I thought |S7E30|

To reach the Saloum Delta in Senegal, I will have to find a boat to take me and my motorcycle across. From the small town of Djiffer, there are lots of boats (called "pirogue") and it's busy with people, animals, boats and all sort of goods. It takes a little time but eventually, I find a boatmen who is willing to bring me across (for a good price of course!)

So often I find myself struggling for words that fully expresses what we are seeing and this is no exception. As a solo woman on a motorcycle, being in the places and situations we see is incredible enough, but the cinematography and editing even during tense pressure situations like finding a boat and loading Alaska is second to none. If I had a daughter, I'd want her to be just like Noraly. Not a famous actor, star athlete, or musician. Noraly is so much more than that. An amazing role model, a shining light to the world. The boats may look a bit questionable compared to modern industrial standards, but they are capable vessels for the job just as those used for navigating around the Darién Gap. The boats probably go back centuries with these people and they know exactly what the boats can do. That makes it easier to trust it all and have faith in a good water crossing 😊

@@colanitower I don't think these boats were designed to accommodate modern motorcycle transport. It took 5 to 6 strong young men to precariously place and remove the motorcycle. Reminded me of Noraly's trip around the Dairen Gap in Panama. Scary.

I'm Senegalese. From a human point of view, this video is very beautiful to me as well. The Djifer region is an area where several cultures mix together :serer, wolof, peulh. Actually, the young man who is helping Noraly is Serer. "Issa" is the Arabic name for Jesus. It's hilarious to hear jokes between ethnic groups. While the motorcycle is being unloaded, you can hear a Serer person saying mockingly to another person ( peulh ): "DO YOU WANT TO MAKE YOUR KING FALL IN THE WATER?". It's an old joke among these cousin peoples where each one has fun pretending to be the king of the other.

That was quite the "navigation to the beach" route and manpower to load and unload Alaska. It's a blessing that the right people show up to assist at the right time. Well, she has to be travelling through Ghana and on to Nigeria, but crossing the Niger delta by small boats would be tricky, as it is inhabited by pirates and bandits that steal oil from foreign rigs and pipelines. It is also larger and terribly polluted, but you never know with Noraly.

The Honda 300 Rally is a very good bike for Noraly's adventures. I couldn't imagine trying to cross the waters in a wooden fishing boat with one those larger engine Adventure bikes. Another suspenseful episode. Excellent

After bush whacking with Alaska, an adventure on it's own, you somehow convey that you need to get Alaska on a boat!! I'm guessing that the sight of Noraly riding into all of that confusion is not one the locals have seen before and yet Noraly remains calm while dealing with language and culture challenges. The local people are so helpful and friendly. It's so good that you are able to capture that in the video.

2nd comment. I've watched this 4 times now. Sooo much to take in. Looking at map of where Dinouar is situated, Noraly may have another boat ride coming. I realized besides the higher impact events in her videos there are so many small comments along the way that I relate to and enjoy. Like noting the large horns on the cows-stunning-then terrifying. Seeing first snake in this season, salt mining explanation, cute huts, and the hee-haw donkey comment was priceless! The tone of her voice and facial expressions reveal more to anyone paying attention. She drew quite a big audience at the boatload and launch. Locals will talk about that one for awhile. Multiple angle video captured during loading and unloading is as good as it gets....and no camera crew! Just Noraly ❤❤❤

Getting Alaska across water seems to always be a challenge! I know you must get very nervous about the manhandling to get into and out of the boats and relieved when you get to dry land again. Noraly makes it safely to the other side aided by an small contingent of volunteers to load and unload Alaska.
