Wouldn't it be advisable to use AT-205 since it is a pure polymer liquid to rehydrate those plastics as well as the gasket and stuff? My uncle has a 1960 Impala which has kept it and restored with it.

You might find the cams are the only upgrade. The valve gear will most probably be standard. You need to do a bench flow test on the heads. I’m not sure if you can do this on the engine?? This car is a hand built Mercedes! The shells were taken from the line and everything was hand built! Including the motor! I wouldn’t even think of starting it on that oil change it immediately!

@LegitStreetCars - Hey Alex I'm sure you know these cars, but I own a bunch of these early W126 cars so a couple tips. First, when you replace the Fuel Pump, be sure and replace the fuel accumulator. It's best to take the whole assembly off and change all three (pump, filter, and accumulator). The Fuel Accumulator in these cars has an outsized effect in how they run - not only keeping pressure in the system when you try to re-start the car, but assisting the fuel pump in keeping the pressure required to pop those mechanical injectors. Trust me this is a big source of problems that's so often overlooked. Second, don't worry about cleaning the injectors - the old ones are made of steel and can easily get rusty. Bosch still sells new ones made of brass (these were used on SO many cars) and if you're going to get into the system just replace the old steel injectors with new brass ones. Lastly (from a performance perspective) the biggest things holding these cars back is the old factory catalytic convertors. Requires the air pump to light them off, and they are super restrictive. If you look at old factory literature, the same motors without Cat were rated +25hp. So removing the factory cats and replacing with modern high-flow cats will make the engines run better, accelerate faster, and you can get rid of a bunch of failure points by removing the AIR Pump system. I promise getting rid of the Cats alone bring these motors to life! Good luck! Very cool car!
@albertpenello
@albertpenello 3 жыл бұрын
@@youngtimersgarage I will! I love these cars can't wait to see what you do with it. You can also find the ETK for these online with all the parts lists (similar to REALOEM for BMW) which will help source the right parts. But that Fuel Accumulator is the same for all the early cars. FYI Rock Auto is going to be your friend as well - they will have the accumulator and the injectors dirt cheap

Those mats, and the sheepskin seat covers, almost certainly came from Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories which used to have multi-page ads in the back of every issue of 'Car and Driver' magazine back then. It also has the Euro-spec H4 headlamps that BHMA used to sell for most Mercedes models then, too. The Whistler Spectrum was not a dealer-installed item, more of a sketchy-car-audio-shop-installed item. Actually, everything about that car looks like the original owner just bought one of everything from the back pages of C&D.

Actually i had a girlfriend and i was fairly responsible at that moment...then back to my Corolla. What a car though, it was so tight and smooth, seemed quick at the time.

That "mechanical" fuel injector system was the Bosch "CIS" type. The injectors do not actually open and close like modern injectors. They were always spraying - the amount they sprayed was modulated by a large flapper/valve (that piece that gets pulled "down" into the large round housing). More throttle, more fuel was spraying. Regardless of each cylinders position or valve state. This is UNLIKE modern fuel injection (sequential) which sprays the fuel only when the intake valve opens. It was a very simple and primitive design.

Since it hasn't run in so long it would make sense that hoses and plastic parts are in working order; heat cycles deteriorate these types or parts quickly

interesting comparison, the AMG in "Today's money" was 157K...consider you can option a Ford 150 into the low 100's shows you how ridiculously overvalued American cars are right now.

Best in the world engineering there bud, worked, owned and driven Mercs since the 60s. No car comes close to them, every luxury car , including Rolls Royce/Bentley, are judged by the standards of every new S-class and ultimately they all fall short. My mate had exactly the same car as this but without the AMG add-ons and it was quite simply exquisite👍👍 One tip (which you probably already know) is to strip the metering head of the fuel injection system and give it a thorough clean when they have sat for so long.... expensive if you don't. Can't wait for the 1st drive.

Looks like it was fully prepared for long term storage with the fuel drained & oiled pistons etc. Somebody really loved that car. What a great addition to anyone's collection.

I had an 1982 all white grey market imported ultra rare pre-merger AMG with 60k miles. I bought it in an Modesto CA car auction for 12k back in the late 80s as a 'toy. Later I found out the car used to be owned by a southern CA cocaine dealer. It got seized by the cop then auctioned off and I bought it. I had it maintained in a specialized MB shop in San Jose CA and they told me it is an AMG modified engine etc. I drove around in town people thought I was a cocaine dealer so I let it sit from 1994 to 2011 like 17 years after getting married and moved out of the area. I took it out in 2011 (mom was selling the house) and I had a shop in south San Francisco to get it running and they did. I drove the car back home to Oregon after putting brand new tires on. I sold the car few years ago to a guy in Texas for only 5k a great deal for him as I just tired of the car after putting few miles on. Enjoy watching another ultra rare pre-merger AMG. It brought back memory of mine!

That injection system is very similar to the one used on my 79 Porsche 928 that I am rebuilding on my channel. My car also has an automatic Mercedes transmission. Do you have some tips to check verify and maintain that injection system? It will be a huge help. Love your videos, don't lose a single one. Keep going.

Go with a w126 or even better w140. 126 will have less electric issues but 140 will be close to modern cars today.

He’s the main reason I picked a Mercedes as my first ever project car. Alex makes everything looks so easy it inspired me but it’s certainly much harder though (obviously). I have zero mechanical experience but trying to make it work - I picked up a 94 E320 wagon. Love it and as challenging as it is, it’s so fun and rewarding.

@@chadtacular what an amazing car. I’m a huge wagon fan and the 320 engine can go and go. Great thing is Mercedes used the same transmission for so many years and it last forever. Enjoy your car and have fun wrenching.

My dad still has his 1992 560SEL. It doesn't drive much and the last thing replaced on it was 20 years ago was the hydraulic rear level suspension. but the one trait I remember is the rear recline seats lol. All our friends tripped out on that and the heated rear sets lol When you opened and shut the door of the car, it's almost like a vault and you can feel the weight and one last thing. The smell of the interior. I can literally smell that leather through the video lol
