Yes it is a warm up regulator. It alters the pressure ontop of the metering valve. The metering valve is attached to that big butterfly. So when the engine is cold there is little pressure ontop of the metering valve so, the big butterfly moves down easily hence the metering valve moves up to deliver more fuel to the injectors when cold and as the engine warms up the pressure increases on top of the metering valve so the big butter fly can't move as far or easily, hence it leans off the mixture. Due to a blocked filter in the warm up regulator, too much pressure was delivered to the top of the metering valve which prevented the big butterfly from moving down. Hence no start. You managed to start it by creating a leak at the top of the metering valve which lowerd the pressure ontop of the metering valve, allowing the big butterfly to move down and the metering valve to move up, by reducing the excess fuel pressure ontop of the metering valve. The other way it started is because you pushed the big butterfly down which moved the metering valve up against the excessive fuel pressure ontop of the metering valve, hence it started. As the car warms up, the warm up regulator increases the pressure on the metering valve which restricks the valve from moving and weakens the mixture. Also you can adjust the metering valve pressure by knocking the pin down that is in the metering valve body. If an engine had a bad flat spot when cold we would knock this pin down till the flat spot was gone but we also had a pressure gauge attached as to not lower the pressure below the reccommended pressure. One could go too far if not careful. If you did go too far, you could pull off the warm up regulator, pull it apart and reset the pin. Loved watching this. With very little experience with this system, you did extreamly well to sort out the old girl. Well done and thanks for posting. It bought back old memories of my dealership days. Loved it.

that is a great explanation! Just to ask a simple question: Do you think there was some sort of vacuum issues going on there? As the fuel was being sucked into the system at the correct pressure in all that mess of piping.

@@YouilAushana No, I don't think there was any Vacuum issues going on that was preventing the car from starting. There are two fuel pressure regulators on the car. The main regulator is in the side of the fuel head and regulates the supply pressure at about, but don't quote me because it has been a long time for me, 3.8 bar. The second one which is the one that was giving all the problem was the warm up regulator which of course varies a seperate pressure to the metering Valve in the fuel head according to engine tempreture and the heat supplied by the electrical plug on the warm up regulator. This pressuer from cold starts at about 1.3 bar and works it way up higher as the engine warms up. Also, this warm up regulator pressue has nothing to do with actual fuel supply to the injectors. Because there was a blockage at the warm up regulator and fuel couldn't get dumped back to the tank, the pressure on top of the metering valve would have been at full supply regulator pressure which was resisting the sensor plate(the large Butterfly) from moving down, hence the metering valve moving up and supplying fuel to the injectors.It all works like a see saw effect only in this case there was an adult on one end of the see saw and a small child at the other end. It is a very but effective system and a lot of diagnosis could be carried out by pushing down on the sensor plate or cracking fuel lines. Also connecting a special fuel gauge with varialble tap was the best tool we had and really the only tool we needed to diagnose problems.Google is a wonderful thing it would be great if you could find a fuel circuit diagram which will clear up any doubts you have with the system. Any vacuum issues usually effected the idle speed and idle quality. Kindest regards from Michael in Sydney Australia. P.S this System was the K-jettronic System it was later upgraded to KE-jettronic which was basicly the same but the warm up regulator was replaced by a electro hydraulic actuator which did a similar thing as the warm up regulator but was active all the time and vaired the pressure to the top end of the metering valve during all sorts of diving conditions. Still used the same special fuel gauge to diagnose faults with the KE but also needed a voltmetre at times to diagnose.

@Mari Rafael Josef Molina From memory the M103 2.6 has a KE Jettronic. Without connecting a fuel gauge it is rather hard to diagnose. However from my past time working on these cars a thing called an Electro Hydraulic Actuator were known to give problems such as flat spots and at times rough idle. It is a small black box mounted on the side of the fuel distributor. As a self diagnosis at home you could unplug the electrical plug going to this unit and see what happens. This unit takes the place of the warm up regulator on the earlier K jettronic. BUT the main problem I found with the M103 was the Distributor cap and rotor button used to burn out. I feel that maybe more likely to be your problem. Hope that helps. Kind regards from Sydney Australia. P.S sometimes when a car had a rough idle we would spray the vacuum hoses and joints with water to see if the idle improved. Also on the KE, from memory they use a electrical pulse valve to control idle rather than a bleed screw. These pulse valves were also known go give trouble.

@@sparko58 Not sure if it was ever an issue that the fuel suffered from vapour lock. May have been possible in some of the desert contries the cars went too but we never had the issue here in Australia. Still not a bad idea to run the fuel over the airconditioning return line as, this line that goes back to the compressor gets very cold. Usually fuel under high pressure will not vapour lock but as I said maybe in contries like Saudi Arabia it was an issue.

Seeing you crack the fuel line brought back memories for me. In the late 80’s a girl I was friends with had a Monte Carlo with a throttle body injection (TBI) that wouldn’t start. I was like 17 and didn’t know much about TBI’s at the time but I told her I’d take a look at it. I cracked the fuel line at the TBI and told her to just tap the ignition for a second so I could see if it was getting fuel. She tried starting the car, not just tapping the ignition like I told her, and high pressure fuel started coming out like crazy. After 5-10 seconds of me yelling at her to stop she finally did. Then a backfire shot out of the TBI and set all the gas on fire. The car was in the middle of a big parking lot, I had no fire extinguisher and nothing to use to put the fire out, and the car ended up going up in flames. I was so pissed at myself but the girl wasn’t to upset. She had full coverage insurance and got a new car out of it. Very embarrassing for me to this day.

Not KE, just K-Jet. KE wasn't out till 1985. Annoyingly complicated to techs trained only on standard EFI, but normally it 'just works' for hundreds of thousand of miles. (That said, I used to rip CIS systems off and replace them with MegaSquirt 20 years ago)

@@michaelathens953 You and me both. Although we actually had D-Jet (proper electronic fuel injection) not the damnable K-Jet - though the cars I had with it were never any problem. I did have one issue with D-Jet, an injector stuck open while I was driving - killed half a tank of gas in about 5 miles with a SpyHunter cloud following me!

I had one of these 500 SEL. They are fast in the day 0/60 in 6 seconds which is good today, but in 1984 even better. This car could put to bed the XR3 and RS Turbo ford's. The only car in This range that was as fast was the XR4. This car could do 140 max

Transmission oil and filter change....although Americans think that gearboxes don't need servicing, it's a general misconception. MB 's needs transmission fluid change and filter every 60K kilometers and of course also the power steering fluid and filter, since it runs on same type of oil..

you Europeans get weird versions of the same cars that we have here in US.... Our cars don't require any fluids to be changed, engine oil, maybe, if you want to, but it can go up to 150k miles before you check the color of that oil and another 300,000 miles before it is recommended to replace. Factory oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid etc in US is a life time oils and liquids... Europeans should learn more about cars that sold in US

That creaking noise while driving is from the bottom of the doors rubbing against the door plastic sills. Get some soft felt and velcro it in place on the door’s bottom plastic (either side of the puddle lights) so that when the doors close the soft felt is rubbing against the plastic door sills. You can’t hear soft felt rubbing. :-) i’ve had three w126’s. Currently I have a grey market imported 1985 500 SEC and a 1991 350 SDL.

Fuel cooled through the A/C was pretty common back in the day on upmarket cars. If you want to do a quicker 0-60 you can manually shift it so that it starts in 1st gear, or jam the throttle hard enough to actuate the kickdown switch - one could install a switch to do it manually, or install the shift body that was mechanically programmed to start in 1st (that trans starts in 2nd).

I have a 1984 190E. I replaced the injectors when I replaced the fuel distributor. It now runs smoother than it ever has in the 14 years I have owned it. 2.3 8v engine. It also has that fuel cooler on the A/C line.

My first brand new car was a 1985 VW GTI with Bosch CIS-E fuel system, same system as this. It was easy to understand because it was air flow based mechanical system with electronic fuel trim and an electrical cold start regulator. It's amusing to watch someone who has not been exposed to old school tech.

Common bosch fuel system in the 80s. Audi, Volvo also used it. Great when it is working but can be a pain to troubleshoot. No repair shop wants to deal with it so you have to educate yourself or find someone who knows it.

CIS was the first generation electronic, huge improvement. Once CIS came out, Jetronic was relegated to the museum. My brother had a 92 VW GLI 16V. The car was sweet, but the K-Jetronic(added an O2 sensor) would never work right.

Looks like a mechanical fuelsystem. idk how else to put it. It's on Peugeot 504 too, the coupe has a v6 and it's got mechanical injection. the valve works as an airflow "meter" and it levers a rod in that spider thing (I beleve what you call the topside). You need to take apart that "spider" on top of it and clean the rod. We did this with a 504 that had been standing still for 20 years. after we cleaned it it ran absolutely perfect. Look at the Bosch K Jetronic. I beleve that's what's on it. You'll need a new gasket if you open that thing up. I see you fixed it but really wanted to share it with you

Hey Alex, I’ve rebuilt quite a few older Mercedes transmissions and what I found to be a big problem is the friction material on the disks starts coming off because they’re just so stinking old so you just need to pay attention to the pan and it starts building up a lot of grit, you might need to throw a couple clutch packs in it it.

Greetings from Bristol in the U.K. The valve assembly at the front of the engine is your Cold Star pressure regulator. It works on two levels 1st is electric element which controls a bi metallic strip which applies pressure to the fuel control valve to operate the cold running enrichment.

The fuel pressure point only makes sense (to me) if the regulator return line was stuck open which would mean fuel was going back to the tank (reducing fuel pressure going to the injectors... which would mean they wouldn't open... opening the lines could have forced the flow of the fuel to be pulled away from the return line opening which means half of the fuel was going back to the tank whilst a little was headed back to the injectors... which would explain why it wanted to start but didn't get enough to stay on... im guessing that vacuums pressure is kept high when the return line valve is shut... but I could be wrong (?) Anyway I love learning from your videos

In this case, the warm-up regulator was stuck shut, causing excessive pressure on the bottom of the fuel distributor, keeping the sensor plate from opening and allowing fuel to the injectors. These need that differential pressure to the TOP of the fuel distributor to balance the pressure on the bottom and let air pressure push the sensor plate open. It's an overly complex system, and really not that efficient, which is why Bosch scrapped the idea in later years for E.F.I.😉

Alex when u gave it a hole shot it looks by way of Rpms it shifted from first to second too soon it didn't rev out 1 st gear which would make it slow . These engines are pretty stout alot of grunt might need more fuel work adjustments new distributor plugs wires timing etc

I had a Volvo with old school K Jetronic fuel system. About the only thing electronic in the fuel system was a 555 timer keeping the electric pump running when it got pulses from the distributor.

@LegitStreetCars: Alex, did you put the gear lever in "3" when you did the holeshot? If you did, that thing should spin the tires when taking off. In "D" it starts from 2nd gear. In "3" it starts from 1st gear. Got an '85 500SEL myself and despite 200.000+ miles (it does have newer cams, since the old ones had the shrinking problem) it runs like a bat out of hell when punched in the "3" position. Changing all those old fluids is so satisfying to watch. And AC cooled fuel lines! So cool. I've never seen that before. The most I've seen is a fan that blows air on the injectors after you shut the car off. It's my understanding that all of that was needed before they starting using fuel pressure ~50 psi+

Just my two cents. I was a European car tech during the 70s and 80s. This is a CIS-E system. Stands for continuous injection, not central as you described it and is the later electronic system. The early CIS systems had a black fuel distributor and were not controlled by an ECU as this one is. The other component you were looking at is the control pressure regulator, sometimes called a warm up regulator. Basically, when the engine is cold, the control pressure allows a richer mixture and as the engine warms up the pressure increases and leans out the mixture via the fuel distributor. You really need the correct fuel pressure gauge to do any meaningful diagnostics too. Otherwise, cool car.

I used to have a 1986 420SEL. The transmission in gentle driving, starts off in 2nd gear, making the car's acceleration smooth but a little leisurely, so as to not bother the boss in the back seat. The first gear can be used by mashing the pedal to the floor to activate the kickdown, after which, the 420 accelerated quite well for a big heavy car. Never driven a 500. They did not sell them in Australia as far as I am aware.

sounds like my W221. In comfort mode it starts in 2nd gear and is smooth but a little slower off the line. In Sport mode it starts in 1st gear and will roast the tires. The older ones it was mechanical and had the kickdown you mention get it to really boogie off the line.

Well Alex you pretty much nailed that fuel injection system. When I was younger I had a whole grip of CIS Volkswagens. If it has an oxygen sensor in it you can set the fuel mixture by hooking up a volt meter inline with the oxygen sensor output wire and measuring the voltage. You turn that 3 mm mixture screw until you hit 1.7 volts. I was always able to pass California emissions with that setting in my 83 GTI and my 85 Jetta

Our UK 380SE back in the day (1985) hit 0-60 in 8-9s. I know the US cars were a mess but even so, that one has a problem. Still, thanks. Ours was the same colour and watching that dash brought it all back. Fabulous car and so smoooth.

Outstanding! It took me 11 years to find a mint 560SEL which I kept for 5 years. Personally I feel the style of wheels on the 190 would suit the 560 better, after all it's a limousine as opposed to sports saloon. Just to be clear I’m referring to the 190e wheels.

I agree. Those r 15 hole wheels. Nicest combination is using the 16x8 that were stock on the r129 red sl pictured and the 190e-16 2.5 evo1. Then u need a small spacer because 116/126 suspension and brakes r different to the 201/124/129 chassis.

@@ebutuoyebutouy I know it’s a personal preference but the style/appearance of the 190 wheels are more a sophisticated look over the sporty 560 wheels. I put a set of 5 spoke wheels on my 560 and it looked it more correctly cheapened the overall appearance. As I said it’s personal preference so beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

@@ebutuoyebutouy to tell you the truth I don’t know, they were pretty much the standard AMG 5 spoke wheels. They look the business on regular AMG vehicles but definitely didn’t suit a 560 limousine.

Loved your comments about the vapour locking/AC fuel pipe thing. In the early nintys I made my own charge cooling system by using a separate ac system and made my own intercooler with the ac system powering and cooling the blown air going into the engine ✌🇬🇧✌🇺🇸

Great Video. The Fuel Cooler is something I also have on my 2000 C230 Kompressor (W202). My guess is that you get more power on a hot day by reducing detonation/pre-ignition with slightly cooler fuel allowing the timing to stay advanced. Maybe?

from what i learned while running EFI stand alone computers, if you have to introduce air by stepping on the gas pedal, the cranking fuel table is too rich. i thought this could be a too rich fuel condition also, but it was actually a lean condition...good job guys💪

"Ancient system nobody works on" You know who are experts at this system? DeLorean. The Bosch K-Jetronic system is notorious. Injectors and fuel distributor should be taken apart, cleaned, and re-sealed. The system runs fine if you run it regularly, but when they sit, they go bad quickly, especially with modern fuel that contains ethanol. Also: You should go interview the previous owner at whatever prison, I bet this car has a hell of a story...

As I predicted in a comment after the first video. You still need to check the fuel pressure for main relief and to confirm the warm up regulator is working within specs. You need to test for proper fuel control, monitor o2 voltage to get the mixture adjust correct. I had a 80 grey market 500sel and also owned some VW rabbit gti's and Audi's, so I've had some experience.

Warm up regulator varies resistance against the plate in the fuel distributor to make it run a little more rich on a cold start. That's why it was running with you pressing against the plate. Once the bi metal strip inside the warm up regulator warms up to engine temperature, it reduces the resistance against throttle plate. Very similar to the Audi and Volkswagen CIS fuel injection of the day. I still have a ton of handwritten notes on training class booklets from a very good friend that was a VW mechanic in that era. .

Lol, I thought it would have been vacuum related on that plate, but it regulating fuel pressure makes sense. The way it picked up by either introducing a fake leak or pressing down the plate makes more sense.

It makes me think it operates on differential pressure, so when the pressure is too high, the differential is inverted, restricting flow.

Considering the risk of damage starting an engine with an ancient filter and oil you are much better off putting in the cheapest filter and oil before ever attempting starting it and then changing both again. Worth the couple of extra bucks.

I would go with a moderate priced or on sale motor oil and filter in this situation. Confirm good mechanical condition, oil consumption, and oil leaks. If engine is good then go with the brand and quality of your choice for long term protection.

It's always good to use a diesel specific oil of the same grade. It has more detergents so will clean better than a petrol specific oil and no risk of leaving any engine flush in.

That fuel system is so complicated.... And I worked on 500 SEC, it's coupe. Beautiful Mercedes. I also service C36 and C43. Also 190e 2.0. My favourite Mercedes to work on is C250 TURBODIESEL. It's easy to work on than other Mercedes

Check the throttle position switch is working correctly. This can be checked with a multimeter through the diagnostic port. If it is working correctly it will send the signal to allow more fuel when at WOT. I have a 1987 560SL which really woke up at WOT after replacing the throttle position switch. Not easy to replace as it requires removal of the fuel distributor.

My wife and I watch your videos and say “ya we could do that”, if we were 20 years younger:) Seeing your hands poke through your gloves again motivated me to recommend GloveworkS by Ammex Orange Nitrile gloves. Our 40 year old daughter stopped by and said these gloves are much better than what she has at her house, I told her they are $40 for a box of 100, she said “that’s why”. Seeing the coolant flow out the lower hose connection in the general area of your collection system reminded me of using a washing machine leak “tub” to place my fluid collection containers in under the car. The “tub” is about 3” deep and 32” square” , whatever doesn’t make it into the “intended” collection container, goes in the “tub” and is easily cleaned up. Thanks again for your good work! I had 1 of these when I was in the Army stationed in Germany but mine was a 1983. Beautiful car, EXACT same color. You wouldn't believe how many people you could fit in 1 either! Now mind you, I didn't say 100% comfortable. Lol.
