I 100% agree with you on the anime comment. I started my art craft on the anime path and my tutor told me the same thing and boy I was pissed (i mean yo I like anime its style etc and Ive grown up watching anime!) however over time as Ive matured I do see and 100% agree with my tutors pov and Aarons points too! Anime is cool and all but as artists we should definitely diversify snd try / explore new styles as this can only improve the craft

I get the feeling that a lot of the time, people who draws anime seems to limit the artist taste. I'm an aspiring artist myself (comic book artist). I DEFINITELY prefer manga over anime, but I do think that learning about artists like Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Botticelli, and so many more can really help diversify your taste. When it comes to manga, I prefer artist like Tetsuo Hara, Hirohiko Araki, Hideki Mori, Boichi, and Kentaro Miura. Simply for their unique art styles when it comes to the form. But, hands down, I feel like everything you said in this video is right!!

Great point Aaron, Its really exciting to hear that youdont always have to stay with one certain method of thinking and grind it out until you become the master of it, I used to think that sticking to pen and ink was better, but I found that gesturally I couldnt build up my artwork if all I had was one stroke, It did help me stop erasing all the time, but I could never fix a drawing if I noticed a problem after the fact. I guess what Im saying is that this all makes a lot of sense , and Im glad you made a video on this!

This is very true Aaron. Some of my oldest friends I grew up with drew only anime, and they never stopped. They never tried life drawing, people sketching or even sketching different styles. It doesn't necessarily make your art bad, but it stunts the growth. Big time.

Thank you so much for providing me with this conversation. My high school students need to hear this. It is often hard to get them to try other mediums, or to express themselves in alternative ways in their art, especially in their sketchbooks. They are frozen in their views, interests, and styles, and rebel against other forms of expression. Odd to see your conversation on KZbin after having a conversation about this same subject with a fellow teacher just days ago. Thank you!

Love it :) ...I'm kinda all over the place with my art, want to learn everything in every medium!!! but I always come back to character design. But it is hard making a living with it when you feel like you're just on the first steps of your learning path. with no formal art education and 3 kids, I've almost been giving up on my art career. But secretly I know it's impossible to let go! It is too amazing.

I think people tend to believe anime has only one way to do it (big head, big and sparkly eyes, exaggerated features in general) and it's not true, there are lots of styles that can be considered anime/manga. Other than that, I completely agree with trying different mediums and styles (even if it's not my/your/their cup of tea) and every art is based on reality (so that should be included as reference as well). Trying to draw with and without sketching, doing fast drawing, trying the other hand (if you're right-handed, use the left and vice-versa), doing blind drawing can also be good exercises. I hope I wasn't too confusing, hehe. And had you not talked about the facebook thing, I wouldn't have known (I barely loggin). 😂😂 See ya~! 😎

he's a really experienced artists. He understand exactly what is anime. That's the whole stupidity of people getting upset over what he said. They take it like their grandma said that, instead of a professionally trained artist. It's not the opinion of your classmate to be jelly, cause he can't do it. Another thing about many, not all, artists that do a certain style that's so specific and has a very rigid way of doing things, doesn't matter if it's anime or not, ( I can name it Egyptian mural art, so people don't get upset, cause it's very similar in the way there are rules about achieving a certain look) is that they lack adaptability and change scares them. People like that will have a very hard time adapting to a professional environment, where they are required to do a lot of very diverse things. I mean, only in case if that whole fan art deviantart/patreon thing doesn't last forever....caugh....

As a kid I wanted to do what you and others, like Sergio Cariello, Mel Milton have done. Around 25 I revisited my love of art and enrolled in Advertising Design. I found out it wasn't the education I truly wanted and had chosen poorly, as I wanted Illustration and that was only a small part of the course. So I missed the career I was hoping for because I didn't understand how to find the right school. However, it put me on a course that led to a mass consumption of information for years, including the art of HTML [and Adobe Software, because I knew it was the future]. I also spent some time in the sign and screen printing industries, things I never wanted but consumed! LOL! ..All information, coming in handy now! Now 52, I'm returning to my childhood love..Illustration, and I'm so glad souls like you make yourself available on the internet! Thanks for sharing your wealth of experience, and for the professional way you do it! LoveYa!

I used manga/anime as a crutch for the longest time, even now I feel like I make jaw lines too square and eyes to big and I have to go back and edit when I realize its seeming through- the art itself was very inspiration but it takes you away from anatomy and locks you in a style early on. Watching other prolific artist and their cartoon styles like you, inspired me to morph my own style and get out of that rut.

I definitely want to add that I'm glad you aren't bashing it. I'm still a growing artists who loves to draw anime an still loves anime(but not in the same sense as most.) In my opinion, everyone learns art differently. Me being in anime actually helped me get more into drawing, and from there I expanded. Outcomes are different. Most anime art I saw was, honestly, the same thing. so I'm steering toward adding more features that are cartoon-like. I also decided to do more detail. Not everyone comes out the same.

Anime and manga art evolve through studies of other mediums and styles. Me personally I've still got a long way to go but I am trying to make the best of my work by doing things outside the anime/manga style. One of the worst things for me is drawing animals but research, practice, and an Aaron Blaise video from the ImagineFX magazine has resulted in an artwork of a baby earth dragon done 12 hours straight cuz I was trying to take in a good chunk of the info >_> Nonetheless, it helped me break out the comfort zone and has really helped me improve my working process

You know I relate so much to this. My life philosophies are, well hakuna matata first off all, worth mentioning because it started it all. Then there is "Because I can." and "If you ask yourself if you should, then you should." If I get an opportunity to try food I will. But when I moved to Minnesota from a tiny place in Sweden where difference is pretty small I still had a culture shock. I could go home if I wanted but when people ask why I moved, I say "Because I could." And my last philosophy is that life is all about experiences, not things.

He's totally right, even if it's extremely hard at first it will only make your art grow. I used to never draw profile faces/body cause it was simply out of my comfort zone and I was just bad at it. Somehow I just stopped worrying if the result was good or not and tbh I really enjoy drawing those subjects now so... try out new things! it only gets better (no need to try out everything though lol) For the anime kind, the problem is that you can only draw it well once you know real anatomy, construction, proportions from real life... so people often draw their anime stuff without knowing what's underneath.

This is good advice. Though I would be very happy just making movies, I do intentionally get out of my comfort zone to learn different subjects and bring back what I learn in order to contribute to what I love. It's nice to hear the same philosophy from a different wording, though I do try to look at different philosophies to keep an open mind. Thank you Aaron.

I'll be honest, I used to draw anime religiously, but I still have to give credit though and thank Mark Crilley, for he is the reason why it helped me to being an aspiring and passionate artist in general and I still go to him from time to time for some tips; I started out drawing manga and I remember being so passionate, I didn't want to let it go because I loved the style so much. and I thought all my life i'm just going to draw manga for a living but I later found out there's something more than that.After being discouraged multiple times, I didn't want to let it go, it was like being forced to depart from something that you love, and I realize that I will never become one and make a career out of that particular art-style for a living. So I decided to move to the Disney style, I now draw Disney/Don Bluth style drawings and make Disney-esque animations as practice, however I still felt like something was missing. I've later learned that no matter what art style, it's all based on realism. I learned that if you don't know anatomy and how the human body works, you won't really understand what you're drawing. Draw from life as they say. I really want to thank Preston Blair, after finding him out, he really help me with body construction and just ditched the "Stick Figure Skeleton" method and went with shapes and "Knowing Your Perspective", as Aaron Blaise uploaded a video for that. I found out that everything is made up of shapes and now that I understand those principles now, I realize that the anime art style is really flat if you look at it, most of the angles are cheated and really don't agree with the laws of physics. I draw everything now from shapes and understanding them three dimensionally and applying them to my works and now I understand how artists make their drawings feel three dimensional. I don't just draw cartoons, I also practice drawing realistically and draw landscapes, and once you know how to draw those things, you as an artist can exaggerate them to caricatures to your liking, hence the word, "Cartoonizing". I'm really glad I grew out of the "Two Dimensional Thinking" phase, and started thinking diversely, outside the box, from a Flat Style art, to Stippling, to even Scribble Art. If you watched Disney's Fantasia, especially Fantasia 2000, you can see a lot of very diverse art styles in each anthology sequence, and that's what I like about being an artist, you're willing to take challenges and try new things with your direction. The main aesop of those three paragraphs basically is, *Don't stick to one style you like*, *Just draw from life* and *Once mastered, you can adjust them to a unique style to your liking, eventually molding into your own style*. Even combine your favorite art styles of various artists and combine them together and experiment with them, play around with them until it works for you.

It funny to hear the same advice from you that I actually give to starting artist. I'm not a master or a teacher but I am a artist and any time I'm struggling in my art, I get out of my comfort zone. though that found things I love like sculpting witch has helped me understand 3d a bit better even in my traditional / digital 2d paintings. Even just trying new things outside of my comfort zone with groups and teams like snow and ice carving, or even just doing public speed paintings and study's. I try to do new things every year. because I know whatever I learn in one medium I can transfer into others. Even things unrelated with art like history, science, mythology, architecture, biology and so forth has been a huge help and inspiration. I do go back to my comfort zone of drawing dragons, creatures, and fantasy or scifi nonsense but when I do it with better understanding of the real world. Mind you I still have a ways to go.

For me, it was manga that made me diversify my art style! Before being exposed to manga, I was never interested in drawing people, human anatomy, character design, world building, cool architecture, sequence timing, panel placements, typography, plot, or story telling. There is so much that can be learned just about comic telling, and each subject expands into even more subjects! (Example: If you are studying environments, you might start looking at older architecture from other countries for inspiration!)

Thank you for sharing such a great experience with us, and this particular topic seems almost painful in many ways. Does it have to be a trade-off between diversity and mastering one particular thing on a high level? Hours in anatomical drawings means minus equal amount of hours of some concept art training and so on. Is it OK to try and pursue many different passions at the same time? is it a waste of time really or all of this can be develop into one unified whole?

Heh, my dad is always telling me to diversify my art. I've sorta "mastered" drawing animals and drawing people in a cartoonish style relatively well. haven't quite mastered anatomy yet though and I can draw Semi-realistic animals relatively well. But when it comes to realism it's somewhat difficult. I don't know how to paint, use oils, everything traditional. Digital painting is very difficult too. Take note everything I know is self taught. Maybe except for the basics. My dad taught me for a while (he is a artist too). That being said, I've had no schooling besides my dad teaching me some stuff. Point is, I find it so difficult to diversify myself. I can have a burst of inspiration and motivation do to do something I never done before. I've done that with drawing landscapes once and it was drawn relatively well. I stared with black and white landscapes mind you. That was last year. Now I can't draw landscapes for the life of me.

Well, something that really helped me was to take objects and start seeing them as figures, for example, instead of looking at an animal as the animal itself, try to look it as if it were the union of multiple geometrical shapes (like circles, triangles, trapezoids...), it will help you a lot when you have to draw something from zero: start simple and then add the details. Another good exercise is to make drawing studies (they're kind of boring though, so you have to keep in mind that your goal is to improve), just take something and draw it multiple times from multiple angles, but not just do that, try to understand how this object works while drawing it. For example, try to analyse how the light reflects on its surface, how the colors combine, if it's a living creature: its proportions and how its body moves... It's really useful and many artists do them, specially with things that are hard to draw (f.i.: hands and feet). OH! And always try to analyse your own drawings and try to see what are the mistakes your making or the most lacking areas so you can work on them in future drawings. Also, flip the canvas is a good idea to see if proportions are correct. It's very easy if you're working digitally (just flip it horizontally), but if you're working traditionally you can either put the drawing upside down or put it in front of a mirror. Believe it or not, the mistakes will pop out easier, this is because our eyes get accustomed to the drawing after being working on it for some time so it may overlook the errors, but changing the perspective will "refresh" your eyes' perception.
@AskeGuitar
@AskeGuitar 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the advice, I'll have to apply this to my daily schedule which I've been falling behind on. I think I need to do more drawing studies in order to understand perspective and angles a bit better, and to help me be a bit more patient with my current abilities.

Basically he's saying draw after referencing reality not an idea or stylization of other artist. I was surprised when I found out a lot of Andrew lumis's teachings where his stylization not anything form reality but his version of reality. But yea if you teach yourself to draw anime you're gonna have to re teach yourself from the begging cause anime is a stylization of other people.

Krobbkag Destroyer Of Worlds Honestly I don't see the problem in drawing Anime/Manga. As long as you have the Basics/Principles of Art down. The Godfather of Manga/Anime, Osamu Tezuka was heavily inspired by Disney/ Western Cartoons and created the big eye Anime style we see today.

demonkateikyoushi While this is true, in Art College you learn essentials of character design/anatomy/concept art/animation. For example, you learn essential principles like "Squash and stretch" for creating varied and unique expressions. Anime lacks that and prefers to rely on emoticons rather than having the face contort to show emotion. The big problem with anime in art college (and I was guilty of drawing this my first year) is anime is viewed by many students and teachers as a copout to actual drawing and principles of art. Why bother learning the actual muscles of the face when you can shit out whatever kawaii desu emoticon crap with little to no effort? While drawing anime is not completely bad or horrid: it is frowned upon by the game/movie industry in a portfolio in the West. Anime is usually a very niche market, therefore, not popular in the US.

Krobbkag Destroyer Of Worlds You should watch Sakuga animation clips. A lot of Japanese animators do use the basics of Animation in their work. They just don't do it the way Disney does it with their Full Animation. Those are people who copy Moe stuff. There's Anime/Manga that follow more closely to realism/real life proportions like Jojo, Sanctuary, Berserk, Vagabond etc 67.media.tumblr.com/6ca42d675de67215506b97a900e020f7/tumblr_mlqye0VC7L1ragvl1o1_500.jpg heyheyletsgobenkyosuru.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/vagabond08.jpg i.imgur.com/VmMC3Lb.jpg Western people want to see Western styles. Anime is kinda a crutch I think for a few people. Problem is from the outside world, anime is anime. Unless a keen anime eye sees your anime work to be different, many people just say it's anime and move on. There's no depth there. What Aaron is saying is perfect and yes, he went about it bluntly but that's good. Maybe some anime artists out there will branch out now after getting the truth served so cold and discover their own artistic voice. Well said :)

There are plenty of anime styles (there is pokemon and then there is black butler, etc), and some artists get great at this and might even be able to make a living out of drawing anime inspired art. Not everyone. People (not directed at Aaron, but at the people in the comments) should really stop hating on it.

What I get is, you should try doing other things. From my understanding, doing fan art only for the rest of your life seems limiting your own creativity, perspective and style. Being stagnant. Something I see happening with some popular artists. *seems like you edited your original post

Doesn't anime mean animation from Japan? That should mean that anime has a wide variety of styles under its belt. So students claiming to 'draw' anime don't even properly understand the medium. Learning the basics means that you can go back to your favourite anime and see how the animator applied their knowledge of the basics to that particular style that they've chosen. At least that's how I choose to interpret it.

+Baka Iggy I agree. I was completely obsessed with drawing anime for a looong time. But when my favourite artists said drawing anatomy was the way to grow, I tried it out and realised it was a lot of fun and my art really improved😊. I also realized that the reason drawing 'anime' style had stagnated my art was because I was copying someone else's style. What you said about fans rejecting more out there aesthetics is true, and also applies to me. That's something I need to work on.

I have a friend who refuses to draw anything but anime. I get why though, anime helped her through some tough times but I do feel like she's, as the expression goes, cutting off her nose to spite her face, and I think she could do great things if she branched out, even a little, and tried new things

The market is so saturated with it already - why would anyone want to do anime and get lost in the crowd? Not only is it not your own style, but it's (in my opinion) a awful one besides.

His whole point is - you're not going to be able to develop much as an artist if you don't try learning other things besides anime, and I, for one, am sick of looking at it :D
