It's time for a quick Carmudgeon Catch-Up. The boys have been busy filming, but they're back in the studio for a session to discuss what's been going on. And, it turns out, to ponder what life would be like with only two cars.

The updates are many! Jason's Dodge Grand Caravan finally got the custom license plate he ordered almost a year ago - and its innocent profanity is making him laugh.
Beatrice the E30 325i is back on the road after a double-suspension swap with Jason's 325i Touring. Thanks to help from the legendary Bill Arnold Independent BMW, the Spec E30 kit is now on Beatrice, complete with a new clutch and throw-out bearing, and she's ready for track days and rallies. And, of course, taking Jason's niece to Thunderhill Raceway's Teen Survival driving school. Where G learned just how it feels to be in low-earth orbit.
And the 325iT switched back to factory antiroll bars with H&R's new springs, tuned specifically for E30 Touring, and Bilstein B8 shocks that were a gift from our friend Sreten at M539 Restoration in Germany.
Meanwhile, Jason also went to Radwood SoCal 2023, where he gave away a gorgeous set of RML Snowflake wheels to a deserving Scirocco fan. He also met @outlaw_welt - a fan and a gentleman who 3D-printed a bunch of Carmudgeon Show and Jason Cammisa Hagerty Show logo pieces. And gave Jason a ride to the airport in his C126 500SEC 6-speed manual.
Of course, no Carmudgeon Show would be complete without a discussion of Sacco-era Mercedes, and the boys successfully put on a Cars & Coffee in Berkeley on Bruno Sacco's 90th Birthday. More than 100 cars showed up, including almost a dozen W124 500Es. Quite an achievement - and Happy Birthday, Mr. Sacco!
Meanwhile, Jason will have just completed his third 24 Hours of Lemons race at Sonoma Raceway (wish him luck and safety) with Bill Arnold and Randy Pobst. The last time they ran this race, 2 years ago, they won overall in their tired, battered E28 BMW.
And Derek has major news to share: he's parting ways with ISSIMI to start his own dealership. Daihatsu? Daewoo? Either way, Derek will be peddling the Cheapest D in Town! Details to follow!
And he spent a couple days driving his brother's Rivian R1S. Derek's bro has what could possibly be the best 2-car solution ever: an ND2 Miata and a Rivian. This leads the boys to discuss: what would happen if they had to get down to just two cars. Would Jason keep just the Scirocco and the Ferrari? What else?
And could Derek actually do it?

Interesting to hear Jason so passionate about this driving school thing when it sounds just what is mandatory here in Finland to get your driver's license. So every driver has gone through that teaching and handling.

It's not that interesting. You could never pass a law requiring low income households to spend a while day and $150 on a driving school in the US. And no the government is not going to pay for it.

I meant that knowing how car-centric USA is I would assume something similar would be included there aswell. Over here all that expense is included in the price of the license in the first place although the total cost is around €1500 (~1700 USD I think). Government doesn't pay anything here either but it's everyones own decision whether they want the license at all.

@@markussalminen8529 Americans seem to think the right to drive is in our Bill of Rights, and it shows in how many people drive. Lane discipline is non-existent. Cars are on the road in states that have no vehicle inspection requirements that belong in salvage yards. I visited Switzerland years ago, and it was truly shocking how well everyone drove. It doesn't need to be said that some of the finest drivers in the world hail from Finland. Cheers!

100%, 🇫🇮 is 👑 for drivers training. Seems like places that don't encourage driver safety, are pro insurance hikes... simple math, over the entire life of driving say 40 years, $mall price to invest to minimize claims. But what do I know...

@_que of course that's true. However it's not easy in practice in the US. Many could afford to do it but it's not in the culture or available in general. The US has like 4x the poverty rate as Finland. For the most part these people still have to own cars to get around efficiently unfortunately, and they will never afford this type of school.

Best 2 car solution I ever had was an 03 RS 6 sedan and an 05 911 C2S manual coupe. It was a match made in heaven! The only thing that could’ve topped it would have been the RS 6 Avant and a 997 GT3. Might have to try and do that …

Jason, the best E39 is a shorty sport E38. My current two car solution is C140 CL500 and E34 M5 with extensive chassis/suspension mods

Any 60s-80s Mercedes sedan (take your pick, they're all excellent) plus an 80s/90s Japanese sports car is a pretty usable and good value two car solution that ticks a lot of boxes in terms of variation.

My "2car solution" for a while now is a 2010 E63 (the 6.2 one) and a 2012 GLK 220 CDI 4M. The GLK i bought for everything the AMG is "too precious" to use for. For example: during winter when it snows we have "childshead" sized ice lumps on the street from the big trucks in the area and so i wanted something with enough ground clearance that those lumps don't damage the car on my way to work. And for the last 4 or 5 years we had a huge construction site in the area that meant a lot of rocks being thrown onto the car on the way to work, and huge amounts of dust. (which almost made the paint on the GLK a little matte) Also the GLK has a tow hook and drives like a video game in the snow. (the only thing you can do wrong with the throttle is to bee too fast for the next corner or for braking, which is the actual danger of a good awd system in my opinion) And it was cheaper than a c-class wagon with awd. The E63 is comfortable, and fun and the first owner ticked every button on the extra list there was. Even a nightvision camera system. The only available etra i know of that he didn't pick was the rear view camera. For whatver reason. And nothing comes close to the engine sound...

1970s Eldorado convertible or k5 blazer are the perfect 1 car solution. The blazer has 4x4 and the Cadillac is FWD so they’ll cruise trough deep snow with the right tires no problem. Both have roofs that can go away for summer fun. Both very spacious so you won’t run out of room. Cadillac usually had the 500, largest engine fitted to a car or the k5 has a CSB that will always have parts available no matter where you are. Neither cost 6 figures

Our 2 car solution: R129 and a newish Chevy Tahoe. It’s amazing, my kids stay out of my SL unless it’s 1:1, which keeps them civil. The Tahoe is the amazing football weekend warrior and grocery getter.

My two car solution is a Tesla model 3 for commuting and a mini JCW convertible for fun. I recently drove a Morgan 3 wheeler and I think it sits at opposite end of the car spectrum and therefore that would be my perfect 2 car solution.

My 2 car solution is a 2.5/FWD manual mazda3 hatch and an e39 530i manual non m sport, I'd have liked something more compromised and thrilling for a 2nd car than a 5 series but it's so great I can't let it go, doesn't help that back seat space in the Mazda is sad.

On the licence plate topic, my state in Australia allows numberplates with 1 of either 5 or 6 set approved emojis. I drive a Suzuki Cappuccino and everybody would always ask how much the car weighed. It became a bit frustrating answering the same the question all the time so I bought the plates 700KG😂, and I haven't had anyone ask the question since! Win!

I bought my E30 with Bilsteins and it was way too rough. A full set of Koni SAs and H&R Sports later and it's way, way better. If you go with H&R Sport springs, you need a set of E46 rear spring pads to dial out the rear camber and to make the car look more balanced. I Google'd about the Bilsteins being rough and apparently a lot of people agree.

Thanks for talking two car solution because, for the vast majority of us, two cars is that max we can justify to own. For 25.25k total I have a 2012 NC Miata and a 2017 A4. Both black on black. Surprisingly similar to your old 2 car solution Jason. Really glad I got an auto for driving 45minutes across DC every day. Other cars in the class are more dynamic but I enjoy having a quiet well finished interior with modern amenities and close to 40mpg highway. Glad I justified keeping the Miata even though I only drive it about once a week now

VW snowflake wheels were 14" not 13" because my 1984 Scirocco came with 175/70-13 Pirelli CN36 tires and my 16 yr old self would have sold my soul for a set of 185/60-14 P6s on GTI snowflake 14s. Better yet a set of BBS 15s shod with 195/50-15 Pirelli P7s but that was dreaming.

Current two car solution: C7 corvette Grand Sport convertible for the fun car and Jaguar I-PACE EV for the wife’s car / daily / baby hauler. Eventually we needed a 2nd car with a back seat so added an R57 Mini JCW convertible to get to 3 total. …previous two car solution was a 970 Panamera Turbo and 997 c2 cab, and I’ve gotta say, much to my surprise, the I-PACE is a better daily than the Panamera and the c7 is a better fun car than the 997.

The headlights and interior upgrades certainly are improvements as is the facelift AMG rear bumper and the grilles. The LED tails are pretty but I wish they kept the body color stripes, was a distinctive and premium touch as there was the extra paintwork required

@@Tangelos I get your point on the tail lights, definitely an extra step and I can see how it’s more premium to some but the new tail lights are one of the things I prefer about the facelift cars lol. The design of the LEDs and the amber LED signal strip are good. Different strokes haha.

Parking lot violence just got a bad smell attached to it in my hometown. In the last days a 27 year old was sentenced to life + security custody afterwards. He shot a 58 year old guy 7 times in a parking garage just because he thought the guy took photos of him during an earlier traffic incident - which the guy did not.

The thumbnail isn’t far off a great two car solution. A w124 with a brake upgrade and m113 swap would be a great all rounder. And an Officine Fioravanti Testarossa could be a great special occasion/fun car.
