The reason Venom is a "loser" amongst his people is because he plays with his food. All the others of his kind just eat their host and discard it. Venom likes to keep his host around a while, like a pet.

That-and if the host is compatible enough to keep; they subjugate them completely and are in total control all the time so they're just using their host like a spacesuit to navigate whatever world they're on. whereas Venom likes to take in the culture of whatever he's inhabiting. just a little helpful 'cannibalist-ish' tourist guy

exactly, the symbiotes, behave more like parasites take control of the body and use the host as a meat puppet, Venom actually behaves like a symbiote, he creates a bond with his host. And that is seen as "weak" to his species, therefore a bit of a loser.

@@FullMetalB Why though? I have a heavy courseload and I still make time to watch over 200 movies a year. I've seen masterpieces and shitshows and everything in between. Venom (2018) just hits this strange sweet spot of being a mainstream, big-budget, major studio, superhero blockbuster that has all the *individual* elements of being a respectable, normal mediocre movie, but instead becomes a vortex of monsterfuckery and chaos swirling around this absolutely bizarre Tom Hardy performance. Mwah. Beautiful. I unironically love it. Also, I usually have to watch movies alone, and so the fun memories of watching them with friends stay with me. If anyone offered to watch more movies with me I'd gladly take them up on that offer :D (I'm dead serious, if you wanna watch movies with me and talk about them I would love that).

Tom Hardy was made for this as Ryan Reynolds was made for Deadpool, we just need a writer with ambition and less fear of being a “family friendly” movie. Only a few characters will benefit from being R rated and this is one of them for sure!

There are definitely funny moments in the movie. I know when I watched it in theaters I didn’t like it as much because reasoning for the other symbiote to come from China to SF felt forced an obvious China ass kiss to be played in their country, some of the effects didn’t look finished and some sections felt rushed and didn’t make sense. But watching it thru someone who don’t focus on these technical issues gives me a different perspective on the film.

They very quickly established that Eddie is a good guy at heart (Having him care for Maria, and having his local community know him) so I think simply being in Eddie's head, reading his thoughts and so on, showed Venom the good in humanity and the world. I don't think it was one specific thing Eddie did, I think it was just Eddie and his mindset in general that changed Venom's mind

In the comics symbiotes also take on aspects of their user’s personality and abilities. That could be the case here hence Eddie’s goodness was somewhat absorbed by the symbiote.

That makes no sense, the symbiotic nature of Venom is to feed off negative emotions making him stronger, that’s already screwed up here Another thing is Venom is supposedly reading his mind, yet has to constantly ask questions about what’s going on, that’s just bad writing all around
@thewerewolff7248

@@ninjanibba4259 Nope. In the original comics the symbiote didn’t feed of negative emotions at all. The only reason Peter removed it in the original comics is because the fantastic four discovered it was alive. It was Peter forcible removing it that filled the symbiote with anger and a desire for revenge which it had in common with its new host eddie brock. The hostile emotions thing was added by later version of the story. Even in current continuity the symbiote had no desire to dominate Peter.

In fact, I find Venom's motivation really interesting. It was possible to develop such a psychological drama from it! He is something like a worker in an anthill. But on Earth he is an alpha predator, a super-individual. And it destroyed his worldview. Eddie is also a loser, who, however, could live a quiet and safe life. But he gets on the adrenaline needle, because in tandem with Venom he can become something more, something important. What a potential the film had! Natalie, fun fact. the opening scene is how venom is usually shown to have made it to earth, except in most forms of media spiderman saves the crew and Jamison, and accidently bonding with the symbiot in the process. Also Jamison is J. Jonah's son. J.K. Simmons' character from the spiderman movies

Jameson also admitted that the reason he hates Spider-Man is because the world celebrates him as a hero, while "real" heroes like his astronaut son have been ignored by civilians in favor of supes. Though his son also thinks of Spider-Man as a hero, especially after having his life saved by him

As entertaining as this film was, I still hate that they didn't have the original origin with Spider-Man. Most of what makes Venom, well Venom is his bond with and later rejection by Peter. What is supposed to make Eddie and the symbiote so compatible is their hatred and jealousy of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Either way this film is still an entertaining film and a million times better representation of Venom than Spider-Man 3, so it is still a win in my book :)

Agree. The connection to Spidey was lost and I can't help but feel like that harmed the film. But if you can ignore that by treating this Venom as another multiverse option and realize the Venom we're thinking about is out there somewhere else, then this is a fun ride.

It's a really entertaining movie and I like that you don't have to take it too seriously since the bad guy is such an over the top prick. The next movie is.......eh, but it wasn't Tom Hardy's fault.

In the comics, the reason why Venom can sense and predict things around him is BECAUSE of Peter Parker. It has HIS abilities along with its own natural ones. There was a time, in the comics where Peter had a black costume that reacted to his will and created his clothes and costume at will. However Peter eventually realized he was slowly turning Dark instead of just sarcastic and witty. He found a way to rid himself of the symbiote forcefully and IT latched into Eddie Brock and the two of them began to call themselves Venom. So Venom, along with its own shapeshifting abilities, gave Eddie all of Spider-Man's abilities as well. And worse for Spider-Man is that Peter's Spider-Sense doesn't work on Venom or Eddie. So Eddie can quite literally be standing right behind Peter ready to kill him and Peter would never be alerted. It's one of the reasons why Venom is considered top 5 of Spider-Man's Arch-Nemesis. There are a whole lot of other reasons as well of course, but not being able to sense Venom is up there on the list of Venom's advantages. Again though Nat, this is in the comics. Not the MCU so I doubt there are any spoilers here. Unless you are interested in reading the comics, then I apologize.

A couple of things to note: The symbiote is, well, just that. A symbiote rather than a parasite, an organism that lives in symbiosis with its host, meaning they both benefit from being bonded. While I do think that this is a decent, fun movie, I can't say it's a very faithful portrayal of Eddie or the symbiote if compared to the source material. A lot of people are saying this version of Venom is comic book-accurate because he physically resembles the comic book character more closely, but both Eddie and the symbiote are much more sympathetic in this movie than they have been for most of their time in the comics. The symbiotes aren't like the Thing. They don't transform into looking like various people. What you saw was the villainous Symbiote changing hosts, going from one person to another, not taking on their physical form. I'm not sure if you remember from Spider-Man 3, but soundwaves are painful to symbiotes, which is why the Venom symbiote has such a strong negative reaction to both the alarm and to the noises emitted by the MRI machine.

Part of the problem with critic reviews is that critics and audiences are looking for different things. As an audience, we can pick and choose which movies we watch. Critics on the other hand have to watch everything out there good or bad. So, something that might seem new or still fresh to us might feel done to death from their perspective, while they might get excited over some new technique or such that we're not likely to notice. Definitely need to take in both perspectives for sure!

Objectively, this movie is not good. It ain't 'The Dark Knight'. And it certainly isn't accurate to the comic. But, I don't care. This movie is so fun and entertaining. Tom Hardy is absolutely fearless. There is no scenery that he's above chewing. (I'm starting to think of him like Nick Cage.) The rest of the cast is great as well. My big complaint is that a movie about a brain eating, alien parasite, villain turned anti-hero should be rated R. (And I'm far from a gore-hound.) Still kinda ticked I got talked out of going to see it in the theater.
