Question of the week: do you guys do enough planning ? Or spend too much time planning and run out of steam to actually paint ?
@Paladin_Maar

I've been trying to find a healthy balance of both honestly. I have a bad habit of over thinking things or just going right out and trying to put an awesome idea on paper with no planning. Getting better at it though.

@@Paladin_Maar Sounds way to familiar to me /: Either thinking way to much about what and how you could do and end up with nothing. Or “just going for it“ and getting deeply frustratet, because it ends in a non readable total mess :/ Hope you will find a balanced way, too.

@@jamesgoodman5643 Nah, you can do it, too. Maybe you just need more practice, or more basics knowledge. Be more patient to yourself :)

Answering your question Tyler: I think it depends on the week, month or stage in which I find myself in my life, sometimes I plan a lot before acting, other times I go straight to action. I think it is ideal to use both "techniques" without exaggeration and without losing vital energy!

I feel like i'm very good at "winging it" but its on short periods and they come and go. I want to be more consistent.

The method I use almost always depends on my starting point. If I don't know what I want to paint (which is most of the time). I will start with color and just play with various moods until ideas pop into my head; I may not know what the subject is initially, but i'll typically know the mood i want, and its a great way to mess around with colors and experiment a bit. If I know the subject however, and it will require a lot of designing, then i'll work with a combination of values and lines. If I have specific story in mind, perhaps light/shadow may be the option. I feel each has strengths for me. However, I rarely start entirely from lines unless unless I'm designing a scene with lots of complex architecture and I want to lay down some construction lines.

It’s crazy how you always produce a video that talks about the exact obstacles I’m dealing with at that specific time as a student artist! Love the content!

Awesome video and loving the new format! For me, I’ve been really terrible with thumbnailing environments and just environments in general, something I want to be able to do more than anything and I’ve constantly avoided it out of fear. BUT, I’ve recently decided to stop avoiding it and just jump in and get all the bad art out of the way to get to the good art and I’ve started with thumbnailing and for me, I just this past week found a nice stride in doing value thumbnails with a tiny bit of lighting info, mostly just soft gradations of the sky here and there but otherwise it’s a value thumbnail of around 4-5 values max. So far I’m having some nice results that’s sparking some ideas for environments and feels like this is the way to go for me right now :)

I start with line only. I simply don’t have the confidence to jump into large masses without knowing what is “there” on canvas. I only see the 2d shape, not really what it could be if without me drawing the geometry that defines it. Thanks for all of your effort Tyler, I enjoy checking in with you from video to video. You’re a busy guy, best wishes to you and the family

i really want to get good at landscapes but when i tried all the techniques id get frustrated until i tried to paint in colour. its so much easier to me to just paint what i see in the reference than imagining and guessing what values there are. by knowing the theory i dont get confused with colour changes and atmospheric perspective etc. i finally started moving forward with my landscapes with sense of accomplishment and improvement while when i was focusing on lines, values etc i just didnt have fun and didnt feel like im getting anywhere.

sketchbook is king! I bring a sketch book everywhere and take down little 1-2" notes. The better ones get to move on to basic comps and the ones from those that have a nice balance of shapes get to move on to the color and paint play. I really like how Marcos Mateu-Mestre lays out compositions in his "framed ink" books and I now try my best to have a good solid composition and value sketch before I start to go in and throw color around. There's nothing more frustrating to me than spending hours painting on an idea that didn't already start off with a strong statement. A polished turd is still a turd, lol

I have to admit, that i skip planning too often, and then facing weird perspective and comp. But when i do planning i i am using mostly line art. Actually lineart and inking is my favourite choice. It may be also cause i am switching to painting just recently, and i still struggle with defining good value while i am so used to crosshatching instead. Great video btw!)

I feel I've gotten to an intermediate phase. I used to think I could do full color until I realized how much I don't know. Nowadays I really value a good B&W value thumbnail. I'm approaching the ability to do thumbnails with lighting I'd say.

It depends what I'm doing and how complex of a scene it is. For architecture and perspective heavy scenes I'll almost always use lines and then directly go to color. When it's a nature type of landscape I'll just start with colors..

I kinda went straight to thumbnailing with color. I wanted to get the feel of the whole piece rightaway but I knew this would be a huge leap from thumbnails using lines. It took a while to get the hang of and still I feel like I've yet a lot to master. Every now and then though I switch it up between lighting, values and lines from time to time. I haven't tried graphic design though so that's something new to try!

I’m going to give myself a mini project to do from this video. Completing at least 10 thumbnails of each type (e.g 10 line then 10 value) Then after completing a set of 10 i’ll pick my favourite/one that works best and provide a fully fledged painting of it. So in total i’ll have 50 thumbnails and 5 fully rendered paintings. Should be fun hahah👍🏻
