Hi Lura , thank you very much. This is a very informative video. Very useful. Can you please provide some guidelines on UCAT and the right time to start Y11 /Y12 . You did mention about med entry training- is there some thing similar for UCAT. Please make a video on UCAT

did not get a good ucat score but I got some advice for you. The UCAT has five sections, two of them must be worked on from the beginning of year 11, and they are the math section and the reading section. Work on them very well, as they are the most time consuming and on top of that, it is so difficult to learn to read and keep information in a short period of time, and get the correct answer in time, similarly, the mathematical problems are sometimes complex (not like too much but its multiple steps), so you need to learn when to skip a question and learn how to answer them in the most efficient way. The other three sections are important but they can be learnt very quickly before the exam. I think three months before is a good time to start but I personally started six months before without properly practicing for the reading and the math sections, whereas my other three sections were pretty good. In the section of pattern recognition, I got 860, so that was a pretty good section for me, and I personally recommend that you do the questions with friends every once in a while to expose yourself to other thinking styles. I was doing some of question with a friend that was not doing the ucat, and we have spent ten minutes looking at the pattern trying to figure it out, she then thought of a solution that worked. After this, I was able to implement her way of thinking into questions that were more difficult for me and figured out how to solve them quickly. Furthermore, try to memorise the possible patterns that you see frequently, for example, the number of odd vs even shapes, the presence of a specific shape and so on. Another advice is when you know that a question is impossible to be solved quickly, guess flag and move on, dont sit on it at all, go on and do the questions that you actually can solve correctly. The last section, which is the most volatile as you can either score so high or score low on it depending on the questions is the situational judgment. In this one, its honestly the very first answer that comes to mind, but this comes after practice, and always remember that it is never what you think it is, its what the people want and expect from doctors, which is to value privacy, the patient and most importantly THE PATIENT. Even if you are not working, if you get called in, you better be there because the PATIENT. I wish I can say more but this is all I can type right now. your welcome, and I hope it helps.

Hi there, did your UCAT result came out very quickly? Or only in September? Did you only starting applying to unis after getting your UCAT result? Thank you.

the ucat results comes on the day or the day after you do the ucat. So you sit the exam and then you see the results. So you already know if you have a chance or not.

Your scores are actually super competitive for rural students - how did you not get a UNSW offer?

Thank you!! My cohort likely had really great scores going through, moving me further down the list - not to worry though, I'm absolutely loving my choice of Uni 😊

@@LauraBeaumont really strange hmm... your scores would actually normally put you on the super high end of the rural cohort! I think even to this day you’d get an interview anywhere in Aus as rural with those marks :)

Hi I am wondering if you could give me advice Starting year 11 this year (at a small school) and my subject selection is general maths, psychology, English, health and wellbeing, and art Just wondering if choosing these subjects will benefit me and because I only have 5 subjects not 6, if during those time if I also focus on learning Chem and biology by myself, would this help or should I try and do Chem and/or biology online?
@riham1933

I'm not an expert but biology and chem is very important in medicine.

STOP RIGHT THERE. Darling, chemistry is a prerequisite of medicine and most other science/health based courses. So you have to do it, do not ever think of doing medicine if you are not doing chemistry. Second of all, with my experience if you are doing qce, DROP PSYCHOLOGY. Scaling is none existing, the subject is rubbish and the teachers hate to give marks. Third, go on atar calculator and see what is the highest possible ATAR you can achieve, because if you get 100 in all of your subjects and only get a 96 or 97 ATAR then you are in danger if you are aiming for medicine. Lets be honest, we all make mistakes so allow yourself to have a gap to make them and not suffer so much with your atar. Fourth, I recommend that you get your school to enrol you in to distance education for the subjects that they don't provide, this way you can still study them and also get the atar you need. I personally encourage everyone to do six subjects, because English is a pain and I personally just past the subject, it is not going to be part of y ATAR, but if you are good in english, then its all good.

I went through MedEntry (www.medentry.edu.au/) and used their Platinum package. It's excellent and I genuinely don't think I would have got the score I needed for Med without it - they provide you with lots of readings, practice Q's and tests. I also have a 10% discount code (LAURAB_22) for MedEntry - I'd recommend starting to prepare at least 6 months before the test. Good luck to your son!

I'd definitely say part-time work is possible during pre-clinical years, but once you're in the hospital full-time it can be a little bit tricky. Check out my video on Money in Med School if you want to know more!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6fGmaiPi8inmKM
